Want a Vintage Engagement Ring? Here's What You Need to Know When Shopping

$

0

When it comes to shopping for an engagement ring, there are two paths: a brand-new, just-made stunner that's never sat on anyone's finger or something vintage, with history. There's something special about that latter option, not least because they're often more delicate and unique than the pieces advertised by modern jewelers. Plus, if you're the dreamy type it can feel romantic that you're including a sweet spot from someone else's love story into your own.

vintage-engagement-ring

The appeal of vintage pieces is real and growing, with research done by eBay reporting that interest in rings 20 years or older (their benchmark for calling something vintage) has jumped up by 200 percent since 2011. It wouldn't be off-base to guess that the trend is partly explained by the very now feeling of wanting something unique. A simple solitaire will always be stunning, but a vintage piece feels less one-size-fits-all.

"Vintage is all about being classic to another era and a truly one-of-a-kind piece," Nikki Lawrence, CEO of estate jewelry company Gleem & Co., told us. "A European-cut diamond won't have the same glittery look of a brilliant-cut stone, but it will give off a rainbow of reflections that no modern stone will have. Rings from the Art Deco era [in the '20s and '30s] are signified by clean, geometric lines, while Victorian rings will have designs heavy on motifs and symbols."

If you're overwhelmed by what decade to start looking at (so many years of sparkle!), Lawrence suggests the '20s, the '30s, and, surprise, the '90s.

"The Art Deco era has the most to offer. Platinum is a very popular metal today and it was also prominent during those decades, giving it cross-over value," she said. "The '90s is another strong era for vintage rings. You can find that modern look at a discount, which is great for getting more stone for your buck." (And, yep, rings produced before 1996 are officially going to be termed as vintage).

Intrigued? If you're ready to start browsing what's out there, Lawrence says it's important to find an appraiser you trust and to take a good look yourself. "Have the piece appraised before buying by an accredited appraiser well versed in estate jewelry. If you start trying to apply modern day norms to vintage or antique jewelry, you'll end up going astray since techniques and styles have changed over the years," she said, recommending the International Gemological Institute (IGI) for full appraisals that don't require stones to be removed (something you want to avoid with vintage).

If you find yourself at an estate sale or antiques shop and spy something sparkly, know what you can quickly examine to decide if something's worth calling in an actual expert. Peer under the top part of the ring to see what's called the gallery (where the actual stone sits): If it looks strong and well-built, the ring should be of good quality. Take a peek at the prongs holding the diamond too. Like the gallery, they should look sturdy and not like they're in danger of breaking or crumbling.

Liberty Ross Re-Wore Her Wedding Dress to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party!

If you fall in love with your wedding dress, it really is a shame you don't get to re-wear it, huh? Well, Liberty Ross wasn't having any of that silly convention, stepping out at last night's Vanity Fair Oscar party in an ivory silk dress that she wore to celebrate her Valentine's Day weekend nuptials with new husband Jimmy Iovine.

liberty-ross-wedding-dress-oscars-2016

It wasn't the dress she wore to actually say "I do" (that one, a black vintage Givenchy gown, shook bridal convention up even more). Rather, this was the pretty pick she chose for their beachside rehearsal lunch the day prior. Languid and sleek, it would have been the perfect pick for a ceremony on the sand, but it looks just as gorgeous for festivities beforehand. Or for an Oscar party.

Reese Witherspoon's Oscars 2016 Gown Had Major Wedding Dress Vibes

Reese Witherspoon picked a jaw-dropping Oscar de la Renta couture gown for the Oscars 2016 red carpet. And although her dress was one-of-a-kind, it reminded us of another Oscar de la Renta gown—a wedding gown from designer Peter Copping’s most recent bridal collection for ODLR. This dress, in particular, stands out because it was one of our picks for the best wedding dresses from the Fall 2016 runways. And while we were partial to it in bridal white, Reese certainly makes a case for color.

Here it is as a wedding dress:

Obviously the dresses aren’t an exact match. The wedding dress is white-on-white, of course, and has thin straps. But from the fluttery neckline to the boned bodice to the fit-to-flare silhouette, there’s no denying the similarities.

Very Real Reasons You Should Get a Dog Before Getting Married

$

0

No matter how long you've been with your significant other or how sure your heart feels, the very real commitment of getting legally hitched is a lot (even couples who tell you nothing changes after the wedding will admit that the can't-break-'em easily ties are nothing to joke about). And while no sure-fire test to judge a relationship exists, there is one situation that could help a lot of couples confirm that, yup, this is the person I want to be linked to forever.

Get a dog together.

lab-puppy

Beyond the wonderfulness that comes with a pet, caring for and nurturing one can reveal a lot about a person—and specifically show off traits that you should be hunting for in a mate.

There will be tons of opportunities to share not-so-fun responsibilities.
If you're talking engagement rings, you've likely already tackled a few responsibility-required moments: Who's going to drop off the rent check? Did one of you remember to pick up toilet paper? But a dog adds an entire new range of things you'll have to deal with, and the majority aren't as easy as swinging by the grocery store on your way home from work. Someone's going to need to go for a walk in crappy weather or handle a yelping puppy in the middle of the night. Watching how someone reacts to these sort of can't-ignore situations is telling about who they are, and you'll really learn how well you work together. Partner always too busy when it's time to go on a long walk in the cold? *Warning bells*

It becomes super easy to see how big of a heart your partner has.
There's something about a helpless creature who's dependent on you to survive that really highlights a person's capacity for kindness. If you've always been on the receiving end of opened doors and carried bags, great, but do yourself a big favor before taking things to the next level and make sure that caring ability extends to another living thing. There's nothing like watching the person you want to commit your life to moving mountains to make sure a sweet furry little ball is content and safe. Conversely, if you find that a pet isn't being treated properly? Watch out.

You'll deal with messy stuff.
A relationship sees its share of tricky, not-neat issues, but we're talking actual messy stuff here. Owning an animal involves cleaning up messes, accidents, and the like, and it's wise to know how your other half reacts. Trust: There are few things more trying than cleaning up after a pup who's not feeling well, whether that means urgently searching for carpet cleaner or washing a load of sheets somewhere around 3 A.M. Get through challenges like these together, and you'll feel equipped for whatever else life will eventually toss your way.

It's the first step to starting your family.
If you're planning on having children, you'll find no better prep than having a dog first. Your twosome instantly becomes a trio, and you'll start to see how it feels to function as a little family unit. And while even the world's best pet-owners will grumble some that a pet makes it nearly impossible to run off on a last-minute getaway or have a lazy weekend morning in bed, it's a gift to see how your relationship will fare when it stops being just about the two of you.

Kym Johnson Got a 6.5-Carat Engagement Ring and a Proposal With a Swan From Robert Herjavec

$

It's not just Kym Johnson's stunning emerald-cut engagement ring from Robert Herjavec that's amazing. The Shark Tank judge made sure that the story of how his bride-to-be got the ring was just as spectacular when asking the big question over the weekend.

"We went to the house and I had rose petals going up to the pool. In the pool was a big swan and on the swan was a box. She pulled the swan in, opened the box, and I said, 'Actually that's not for you. That's for me,'" Herjavec told Us Weekly. "I opened the box and the ring was inside. And I said, 'Will you marry me?' and she started crying and doing crazy sounds. And then I asked again and she started crying and doing crazy sounds. And I asked a third time and I was like, 'OK this is really uncomfortable!'"

Newly engaged or not, the couple already has their first-dance song picked out, and, guys, it's kinda sweet. Had the couple not gotten eliminated on Dancing With the Stars last year, their next piece would have been performed to Etta James' classic "At Last," and it's not been forgotten. "It was our next dance to do but we got voted out so we never got to do it. It will be our first dance as husband and wife, I guess," Johnson explained.

kym-johnson-engaged-robert-Herjavec

The 6.5-carat engagement ring appears to be a large emerald-cut diamond flanked by two smaller rectangular stones. The lucky lady said she spent most of yesterday gazing at its brilliance, but she hardly noticed the pretty pick when Herjavec popped the question. "I didn't even really see the full beauty of the ring because he could have given me anything. I was just so happy that he proposed to me."

Taylor Swift Nailed These 3 Things in Her Maid-of-Honor Speech: Watch and Learn

$
0
0

Taylor Swift was more than just a pretty face (or a pretty bridesmaid dress) at her childhood friend Britany Mack’s wedding. She also gave a really lovely maid-of-honor speech. Not surprising, given that she’s an award-winning lyricist, but you don’t have to have a shelf full of Grammy awards to give a heartfelt toast to the bride and groom. Here are three snippets from Taylor’s speech (along with more highlights from Ben and Britany's big day) and how you can copycat her the next time you’re giving the maid-of-honor speech.

“He would chase her and pursue her through middle school and junior high and high school, and their paths would diverge and come back together, and it would be so magically unpredictable, but at the same time so incredibly fated, just like the best love stories are.”

Talk about the couple. It’s their day, so don’t make your speech a never-ending ode to your relationship with the bride.

“My favorite accomplishments of my entire life is that everything in my life has changed except for me and Britany. She was my partner in crime at Brownies sleep-away camp, and she was my date to the Grammys. And little either of know, that Prince Charming, for Britany, would be the kid that set next to me in class with the bowl cut and the Lego lunch box.”

Don’t talk about to the bride in a language just the two of you speak. Nothing’s more boring for the crowd than listening to the maid-of-honor recap 42 insider jokes with the bride: “And remember what we said when we pledged a sorority together—light switches are for suckers.”

02-maid-of-honor-speech-taylor-swift-0301-getty

That's the future bride and her MOH at the aforementioned Grammys.

“Tonight we’ve got mothers crying, we’ve got fathers that are filled with pride, and I—and all of the rest of your friends—are overjoyed for you, because we know that the best parts of your love story are yet to come. Congratulations.”

Repeat yourself. Taylor mentioned “love stories” in both the first and third snippet, and we bet the words were sprinkled throughout her speech. Having a theme or words that you repeat throughout your speech can help tie it together. (Think: The intro to Love Actually (“Love is everywhere”/“love actually is all around.”); Jack’s “Promise me, Rose” speech from Titanic.)

Watch the whole thing here:

Britany LaManna Wedding from Britany LaManna Wedding on Vimeo.

You can also see around the 10-minute mark that Taylor took the stage with the band. Totally OK if you’re Taylor Swift (assuming she had the bride’s OK) but not something most maids-of-honor should do. Especially if the wedding has an open bar.

Adele Helps a Fan Propose to Her Boyfriend—and Makes Sure the Guy Says Yes

Adele's world tour started yesterday in Belfast—with some added Leap Day excitement. Traditionally, Leap Day is known as the day that women can propose to men,* and a fan named Hayley decided to do just that at the show.
*For the record, proposing to your guy is a Do in our book, any day of the year.

Adele helped Hayley propose by inviting her on stage—but the proposal didn't quite go as smoothly as planned. When Neil answered "maybe," Adele exclaimed, "You have to say yes," over the booing crowd. "After three everyone say, 'Come on, Neil.'" And she didn't stop there: "You need to say a proper yes, bruv, you have to say yes."

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis—who welcomed a daughter in October of 2014 and were married the following July—have always been hush-hush about their wedding details. But Ashton finally opens on the Ellen show today. “Every time you’ve been here and Mila’s been here, you’ve been really cagey about the whole thing,” Ellen pressed. “You went and got married without any of us being invited.”

“It was a ninja effort,” Ashton explained. “We really didn’t want helicopters at our wedding. And it’s a legitimate concern. So I was posting things on social media that were in different locations to avoid the helicopters. We didn’t want to be screaming our vows at each other, like, ‘FOREVER!’ ‘DID YOU SAY NEVER?’ So we went really under the radar.”

Here's an Exclusive Sneak Peek at Suits Star Rachel Zane's Wedding Dress

Suits fans are on the edge of their seats anxiously awaiting tonight's finale for the verdict of Mike's trail. The ruling will determine whether or not Mike will marry his fiancee, Rachel Zane, played by actress Meghan Markle. And though we can't tell you how the episode plays out, we are pleased to report that the wedding dress stole the show. Take a look at Rachel-slash-Meghan in her stunning Anne Bargewedding gown from Kleinfeld in Hudson’s Bay in Canada :

rachel-zane-dress-3

Below, we chat up Meghan and Suits stylist Jolie Andreatta to find out why they said yes to this gorgeous gown.

Glamour: As a fashionista yourself, Meghan, were you able to help pick the dress?
Meghan: Absolutely! I weigh in on all of Rachel's outfit choices because they are personal, and also because I have lived this character for five years now so I know her better than anyone. For her dress, I had to remember that her style is very classic and timeless. When I went through all of the options with Jolie and my dear friend Jessica Mulroney of Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay in Canada, I put this one on, and it just screamed 'Rachel.' It is classic and fairy tale and the culmination of everything she's been waiting for with her big day. She deserved this type of dress for this moment. Also, from a practical standpoint, I knew I would be wearing this dress for many hours of filming so this was perfect because it was lightweight and also wouldn't wrinkle. Amazing!

Glamour: Is it a dress you'd wear at your own wedding?
Meghan: It's not my personal style, because I'm a lot more relaxed than Rachel but I love that I got to play dress up in this gown. For TV we did have to bring the neckline up a touch per the producers request, but the original design has a low ballerina inspired neckline and I happen to love that.

Glamour: What's your perfect wedding dress?
Meghan:I have the luxury of wearing beautiful pieces of clothing every day for work, so my personal style—wedding or not—is very pared down and relaxed. Classic and simple is the name of the game, perhaps with a modern twist. I personally prefer wedding dresses that are whimsical or subtly romantic. Delphine Manivet and Christos Costarellos are faves of mine for their uniqueness and beauty. And I will always be a fan of Ellie Saab. J. Mendel is spectacular as well, especially for more structural designs.

Glamour: Do you think that it's bad luck when the groom sees his bride in her dress before the wedding?
Meghan: I'm very superstitious but I wouldn't say that it's bad luck, I would just say I prefer sticking with traditions ;)

Glamour: What is your favorite celebrity wedding dress?
Meghan: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Everything goals.

rachel-zane-dress-1

rachel-zane-dress-2

Glamour: Styling someone in a wedding dress is certainly a big change from the typical outfits on Suits. Were you excited to switch things up?
Jolie: Since I found out two days before we had to shoot it I was very excited! But WHAT! I didn't know it could happen but we did it! I found out Thursday morning and we shot it Saturday morning.

Glamour: Wow! So shopping for a wedding dress for a show is not like shopping for a wedding dress in real life if you were able to pull it off that quickly?
Jolie: Shopping and tailoring! Luckily Meghan had a friend who works for Kleinfeld so it was our first and luckily last stop because they had so many different styles so we were able to get the styles that were requested plus a handful of things that were just beautiful. And they were helpful in getting the clothes to us for the fitting on Friday and luckily I have a insanely talented seamstress. Because wedding seamstresses aren't used to turn-arounds like that and they aren't used to chopping things up, but we have no fear. It doesn't matter if it's $25,000, we're going to cut it up to make it right for camera.

Glamour: So is it harder to find the perfect dress for a show or in real life?
Jolie: Oh much harder in real life, because for one thing you're dealing with someone who is hopefully going to do this once in her life and she's going to be much more emotional about it.

Glamour: Who else had an input besides you and Meghan?
Jolie: Well you're dealing with more than my taste and the actress' taste because you're dealing with producers for approval. But Suits has been very good to me about not needing approve things, so it stays pretty close to me and Rachel. The producer felt it was too low for a church setting so as Meghan told you, we brought the neckline up a touch and took out the straps to make it a very open V on the shoulders.

Glamour: Did the events that ensued at the wedding impact the choice of dress? {You'll have to tune in tonight to find out what happens! }
Jolie: I probably would have put more hair ornaments if the wedding had gone as planned.

Tune in tonight to the season-five finale of Suits at 10 P.M./9 P.M. CT on USA Network.

Mary-Kate Olsen Pairs Her Massive Engagement Ring With an Understated Wedding Band

Plenty of celebs get an engagement ring with a super-size diamond and then wear it with a wedding band with more huge diamonds for a ring finger that’s impossibly bling-y. Mary-Kate Olsen, who said “I do” to longtime boyfriend Olivier Sarkozy in November, certainly has the super-size engagement ring—her vintage Cartier ring features a 4-carat diamond center stone in a sapphire halo—but for her wedding band, she decided to go low-key.

mary-kate-olsen

Mary-Kate was spotted yesterday for the first time post-wedding wearing her engagement ring and her wedding ring: a no frills plain gold band. If anyone could get away with a pile of diamonds, it would be Mary-Kate. (She can get away with pretty much anything, in our book.) But we like that she decided to keep her ring finger timeless and classic.

We’re working on getting the picture for ourselves, but if you need to see a plain gold band to believe it, click your way over to People.

4 Crazy-Horrible Wedding Disasters That Weren't All That Bad in the End

If you’re planning a wedding, chances are your mind went to a billion dark, disastrous places. (What if there’s a hurricane?! What if the venue goes bankrupt?!) Sound like familiar concerns? Remember these two things: (1) That stuff probably won’t happen, and (2) if disaster does strike, it will all work out in the end. See the proof in these debacles.

wedding-disasters-0303-everett

“Our venue went bankrupt and stole our deposit.”
Our venue closed four months before our wedding amid rumors of bankruptcy. The owner completely fled to evade tax fraud charges! We had already set the date, made a deposit, and sent out invites. The venue’s amazing staff, who were left stranded without jobs, worked for free to compile lists of other venues and vendors willing to offer help and services at reduced prices. We were overwhelmed by all of the support from the hospitality community and ultimately booked a lovely restaurant for our special day. Our wedding went off without a hitch, and now our tale of bad luck is just a funny story we tell about our misadventures in wedding planning.
—Jaime, New York

“Our officiant got lost and never showed up.”
My husband and I were raised Catholic, but we aren't practicing parishioners as adults. So, in order to have the contemporary wedding we wanted, while paying respect to our very religious families, we found a modern Catholic priest willing to perform a Catholic-inspired ceremony in our favorite museum. We thought we found the world's best compromise—except the day of the ceremony, he put the wrong address in his GPS and ended up in south Brooklyn instead of Astoria (not exactly next door, especially with traffic). Fortunately, a few of my friends have officiant licenses. When we realized that the priest wouldn't make it in time, my close pal Whitney stepped up to perform the ceremony. It turned out so amazing and magical in the end that I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I was so happy that a friend was marrying us instead of a stranger. Destiny?
—Naomi, New York

“The flower girl threw up all over her dress.”
Our four-year-old flower girl got so nervous that she puked all over her dress in the bridal trolley on the way to the church. But she still wanted to walk down the aisle! Of course, her dress was covered in puke and we didn’t have time to turn around and get something else for her to wear. (We were already 30 minutes late and everyone waiting at the church started to think I had cold feet.) Long-story short, she ended up walking down the aisle in just her pink glitter Toms shoes, undies and sunglasses. It was an adorable disaster.
—Libba, Boston

“Our florist forgot the flowers.”
First, our florist was 30 minutes late to the church and my groomsmen and I had to assemble everything ourselves. Then, I realized they didn’t even bring the flowers my wife specifically requested for the pews! I was freaking the $%*& out that she’d be so upset when she walked down the aisle, seeing the wrong flowers on every bench. But she wasn’t! In fact, she was so focused on me that she didn’t even notice.

4 Sister-in-Law Horror Stories (and You Thought Your Mother-in-Law Was Bad!)

Be warned: Some of these sister-in-law horror stories could shake you to your very core. And be glad: Your own sister-in-law's shenanigans will look almost angelic by comparison.

"My sister-in-law stole our china."
Lynn's sister-in-law made quick work of attending the couple's wedding. "She flew in for our wedding, and flew out the very next day," Lynn recalls. It wasn't until after she'd left — as the couple gathered at Lynn's mother-in-law's home to open their wedding gifts— that the family discovered something very valuable was missing: Their china. "We all enjoyed the after-wedding glow until we realized that all the china given from both our mothers had disappeared," says Lynn. "None of our presents contained any china whatsoever!" As the family scrambled to file claims to recover the goods, Lynn's mother-in-law revealed her daughter had long had sticky fingers. "Right then and there, I had to decide to forgive my sister-in-law," Lynn says, "or else I would not be able to speak to her again."

"My sister-in-law saw me naked."
At Christmas time, Robyn hosted her husband's family at her home, including her sister-in-law who'd traveled from New York. As the couple put their children to bed one evening, Robyn's sister-in-law offered to help — and Robyn gladly accepted. The women tended to their respective children, then Robyn retired to her bedroom to undress and prepare to sleep. "I was still undressed when my sister-in-law walked right in, viewing me completely naked," Robyn describes. "We were both shocked, but she kept standing there apologizing until I yelled, 'Get out!' Only then did she finally leave." But this horror story isn't over just quite yet. "If that wasn't bad enough," Roby says, "my mother-in-law told me the next day that I shouldn't have yelled at her and called me nasty, which didn't go over well. Needless to say, it wasn't a great rest of the trip."

"My sister-in-law tried to set my husband up with another woman."
Carol and her husband had been married several years when his mother took ill, and he quickly flew from Virginia back to their hometown South Dakota to stay by her side. "During his visit," Carol says, "his older sister tried to set him up with one of her trashy, dentally-challenged friends — even though she knew he was married to me." While her husband declined the inappropriate offer, Carol's sister-in-law didn't stop there. "She went so far as to give this woman our home number," Carol says, "and she called often. I'm not sure why his sister would do this to us, because I have never done anything cruel to her."

Horror Story: "My sister-in-law is holding a nine-year-old grudge."
A year after Alexandra had her first child, she decided to return to work — to a home-based sales position similar to her sister-in-law's job. And her career change didn't go over so well. "Even though she lived 70 miles away from us, she decided to hold a holy grudge that has now stretched on for nine years," Alexandra says. "This grudge has included ostracizing my firstborn, who is her goddaughter, and also creating an enormous wedge in the family even after I apologized for any and all misunderstandings — at my mother-in-law's request, I might add." Nothing has worked yet, Alexandra reports, and the families still don't speak. "It's a shame and downright horrific," she says.

Dressing for anything when you’re pregnant can be a challenge—work, working out, even bed. (Hey, your pre-baby pajama pants might not have that much stretch.) But dressing for a wedding is especially challenging: There’s a lot of sitting, a lot of dancing, and a lot of cake eating. And you want to last through all of it. And look cute. Catherine (who won Sean Lowe’s final rose and is now expecting their tiny future Bachelor contestant) managed to nail all that last night.

Ahead of a friend’s wedding last night, Sean shared this photo of himself and his bride: “I believe she's the cutest pregnant woman there ever was. That's my completely unbiased opinion.” We kind of agree:

And then Catherine shared this face-off of pregnancy glow vs. bridal glow. That’s a whole lot of pretty in one picture.

It looks like Catherine picked this lacy black tunic, which isn’t technically a maternity dress, but clearly the shape is bump-friendly.

We’re all about bump-hugging maternity style—a la Chrissy Teigen and Kim Kardashian—but when you’re dressing for a wedding, it might be smarter to pick something with a little more breathing room.

"Don't Think About Budget" and More From Martha Stewart on Say Yes to the Dress

Crowd-sourced wedding advice has its place, but if you have access to the wedding expert, you go straight to the top: Bailey, a Say Yes to the Dress bride did just that, asking one Martha Stewart to join in her wedding dress hunt after she was having doubts about her “say yes” dress. (Bailey is an employee of Martha’s publicist.)

“Having had a daughter who wore a gray flannel suit to her wedding, any chance I get to help a bride is fun,” Martha said.

Bailey pointed out a dress she had tried on and said price tag was too steep for her. “Oh, don’t think about budget,” Martha teases.

While we watch Bailey try on the dress she’s questioning, Martha explains to the camera: “You have to tread lightly. You can’t say, ‘Oh, that’s a horrible dress’ and she’s already chosen.” So Martha opens with, “It’s gorgeous.”

But then comes the blow: “I just think it’s a little rigid. It’s a little hard.”

As everyone else chats about the merits of the dress in question, Martha says in voiceover: “That she has had second thoughts ... I think is good.”

To see which dress Bailey says yes to, tune in tonight to the season 14 premiere of Say Yes to the Dress on TLC at 9 P.M. ET.

4 Real Wedding Deadlines You Don't Want to Miss

When it comes to planning your wedding, your to-do list—and it's accompanying-but-terrifying timeline—can be enough to make even the coolest bride lose her calm and ask if these deadlines are really as hard-and-fast as they seem. After all, with only so many hours in each day, it's only natural to search for deadlines we can let slide.

But Chandra Keel, owner of Chandra Keel Events in Phoenix, assures us that most wedding-related deadlines aren't arbitrary. "Planning a wedding involves coordinating many moving pieces, and one task is rarely independent of the others," she says. "Making and keeping deadlines keeps your planning on track and organized."

Here, our experts say, are four deadlines you simply can't dodge.

1. Choosing your venue. Second to your guest count—which determines the size and scope of your wedding—comes selecting a venue, says Sarah Glick, wedding planner with New York City's Brilliant Event Planning. It's one deadline you can't miss, she says, because "without a venue, you don't have a date for your wedding—and that means you can't do any other planning. To hit this deadline, Glick suggests beginning your venue search up to a year before you'd like to tie the knot.

2. Sending your invitations. Not only is it common courtesy to give your guests time to make their wedding-related plans, their responses are the key to meeting many other deadlines, Keel says. "If you get your invitations out late, then your final guest count is delayed," she explains. "When working with your stationer, it's very important that you adhere to his or her deadlines so that you are able to send your invitations on time—six to eight weeks before your wedding."

3. Deciding on your wedding dress. For many brides, nothing can hold you back from dress shopping—not even a time crunch. But if you're tempted to slack past the eight-month mark on this particular to-do list item, Glick warns you shouldn't. "You can find a dress on a shorter timeline," she says, "but it becomes increasingly difficult to get exactly what you want the longer you wait because of the sheer amount of time it takes to produce a gown and conduct multiple fittings."

4. Collecting your RSVPs. This may be one deadline you can't control, but it's one you absolutely must enforce. "If any guests have not responded by that deadline date, you'll want to follow up with them quickly so that you can finalize your head count," Keel says. "This allows you to meet the other deadlines required by some vendors for your final head count," such as your meal count.

Lady Gaga's Wedding Plans Will Surprise You—in a Totally Unexpected Way

Lady Gaga could ride down the aisle on a unicorn while wearing a wedding dress made of pixie wings plucked from her personal fleet of fairies and we wouldn’t surprised. But it sounds like her wedding to Taylor Kinney might be surprising in a different way: It might be totally, well, normal.

“I think if I wouldn’t let my mom do this with all of us and my family—I think if I would of denied the women of my life the planning of the wedding they would probably kill me,” she recently told Ryan Seacrest. “I have all the help in the world in a way!”

Gaga swore that her big day will be very un-Gaga-like—no meat wardrobe pieces, no one hatching from eggs. Instead, it will be more of a “family style” wedding: “We are not planning anything that is worth writing about.”

What they have planned so far: “They’re looking at places in the Italian countryside. She wants a big Italian wedding,” a source “close to the singer” told Page Six.

In the past she’s said that her wedding dress won’t be a high-fashion statement piece. (Sorry, meat-dress makers.) “It will be totally for Taylor,” Gaga told WWD of her wedding dress plans and her groom. “It’s all about my man. I haven’t really thought about anything specific yet, but whatever it is, it will be totally for him.”

Gaga’s go-to designers—including Alaia, Versace, Balenciaga—are likely falling over one another to stitch her a couture gown, but there’s certainly a chance she’ll look to a traditional bridal designer for her wedding dress—especially considering that Taylor’s taste seems to skew more toward traditional.

While the rest of us were hitting the snooze button, fashion was happening in Paris, darlings. Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid were headed down the runway at Chanel, as was this chic-for-weeks creampuff, which did a slo-mo march through our Instagram feed, courtesy of Eva Chen.

“Someone please get married in this bon bon of a @chanelofficial confection,” implored Eva, and we’d like to second that request.

We’d skip the hat, but even the tights could work on the right offbeat bride. {Hey, freezing is never en vogue. } Picture her with an ear-to-ear grin, striking a pose at the top of the steps at City Hall. Perfection, non?
