"The Bride Requested 'Flat Gifts' at Her Shower, So What Do I Give as a Wedding Present?"

$

what-does-flat-gifts-mean-0918

Writes Save the Date reader Kathy:

I knew I was going to be invited to a bridal shower and planned to bring a gift to the shower and then write a check as the wedding gift. Then the bridal shower invitation arrived, and it stated “flat gifts preferred.” So do I just give a check at the shower and then not give anything for a wedding gift? Or do I give a check the shower and another at the wedding? And if I give two checks, how much do I give at the shower?

Here are my thoughts:

If you’re OK with writing two checks, the short answer is: Write one check for whatever you were going to spend on the shower gift and then write a second check for the wedding gift.

(The long answer involves me cringing about requesting gifts on an invitation. But we all know I’m pretty old-fashioned when it comes to wedding etiquette.)

If you don’t love the idea of writing two checks, I don’t think it’s wrong to bring an actual gift to the shower.

If the “flat gifts” request was because the couple is moving (and I know sometimes this is the case), you could get creative and give something flat that’s not a check or gift card, like a vintage map of the city they’re moving to or the city where they met. If you have time to research their new city a little, you could buy them a restaurant gift certificate. (You’d have the restaurant mail you the gift certificate, so plan ahead.) Or you could have a not-flat gift shipped to their new home.

And if they’re not moving, check weddings.com to see if they have a registry. (Even couples who request flat gifts sometimes have one as a backup.) If they don’t and you prefer to give a gift, I think you’re free to pick out a thoughtful gift on your own.

Ladies, what do you think of “flat gift” requests?

I get that if you’ve been living with your guy, you already have towels and pots and pans. But I still think you should have a traditional registry, because not everyone wants to give you cash, especially for a shower. And if you opt not to register, I think you need to graciously accept the gifts you’re given, just like you would for, say, your birthday.

Tadashi Shoji Lilian Dress from BHLDN, $420.

Back when brides and grooms were most-often married by “professionals”—priests, rabbis, justices of the peace—this wasn’t a problem. But now that many couples are opting to get married by friends and relatives, couples are...

Forgetting to get their marriage license. (Seriously. Not naming names but this has happened to a few couples I know.)

D’oh!

Obviously that’s a major oversight, but—unlike someone who marries people for a living—your groom’s fraternity brother or your college roommate probably aren’t familiar with the legalities behind marriage. Where a justice of the peace might have printouts of your marriage license application, your Aunt Marjorie is probably too busy worrying about bumbling her lines to remind you to review the local marriage laws.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t get married by a friend {We were! } but if that’s your plan, make sure you’re super-clear on the local laws, which vary by state, county—even town to town. And if you’re planning a destination wedding, triple-check the requirements. You may have to get blood tests or even establish residency ahead of your wedding.

Did you remember your marriage license? Did you have to jump through hoops to get it?

14-Karat White-Gold Engraved Ring Setting from Etsy seller OroSpot, $399.

Writes Save the Date reader Ana:

I’ve been dating a lovely guy for almost two years, and we live together and everything. I think a proposal might be in the works, which is great.

So here’s the problem: When I was very young—maybe even when I was born—my aunt invested in several loose diamonds so that one day my cousins and I would have diamonds for our engagement rings. (Or some nice diamond jewelry, if we opted not to marry.) So that’s totally awesome.

But how do I let my boyfriend know this diamond exists without (A) freaking him out or (B) seeming like a high-maintenance chick? It would be so nice for him not to have to spend the money on a diamond. I realize this is a total “first world” problem to have, but I’d love some feedback!

Here are my thoughts:

My line is always “open, honest communication,” but I get that saying, “Hey, I have a diamond when you want it—IF you want it—not that I’m expecting a diamond!” feels totally awkward and presumptuous and unromantic. Which is to say, I don’t think you need to say any of it.

Technically speaking, the diamond isn’t yours to hand over, right? I assume your aunt’s still in possession of the diamond, so she should be the one to offer it up. If your aunt’s never met your boyfriend—or that would be a super-awkward conversation (“Hi, boyfriend I’ve met once!)—you could also ask one of your parents or a sibling to mention the rock, maybe via email: “Hey, Aunt Shirley asked me to let you know that she has a diamond she’d love for you to use in Ana’s engagement ring when you’re ready to start thinking about that. No pressure to propose or even to use the diamond, of course, but it seems like that’s the direction you’re headed in, so if you’d like to see it, she’d love for you to email her when the time comes.”

That conversation too could be a little awkward for your boyfriend. But I think it’s the least-awkward alternative—especially if he’s {Yikes! } already ring shopping. It’ll be much easier for him reply to one of them with a quick: “Thanks. I’ll reach out.” then to stammer to you, “Um, are we getting married?” or “Uh, I already bought a ring.”

I think the key to the whole thing not feeling shady or scheme-y is to ask a family member to mention the diamond—and then ask for the conversation to end there. Tell your mom or sister, “Please tell him about the diamond, but please don’t tell me how the conversation goes.”

Ladies, what do you think? Should Ana tell her guy about the diamond? Or ask a family member to step in?

Dax Shepard's Wedding Tattoo Is So Sweet, You Might Copy It

I’ve always suspected Dax Shepard was my spirit animal—he’s funny, had the ultimate low-key wedding, and is a huge fan of Kristen Bell. (Um, his wife.) And the tattoo he got in lieu of a wedding ring confirms it. Check out his ring finger at the premiere of This Is Where I Leave You.

1-dax-shepard-kristen-bell-0922

Well, you can’t see anything much from there. Let’s go in for a closer look.

2-dax-shepard-kristen-bell-0922

Guys, it’s a little bell. (Here’s an even better picture.) I love it. The bell has the letters K, L, and D in it. (Kristen, daughter Lincoln, and, presumably, Dax.)

I thought briefly about getting a rat tattoo after Rory and I got married. (His initials are R.A.T.) Then I googled “rat tattoo” and had a change of heart. (But if you want to see picture of rats with tattoos, here you go.)

Also, unrelated, I adore this:

Thoughts on Dax Shepard’s bell tattoo? Would you do something similar? Is there a tattoo that would be a nod to your groom’s name?

We know that The Bachelorette’s Emily Maynard swapped vows with automotive management consultant Tyler Johnson in a surprise ceremony in Sharon, South Carolina, in June, but the newlyweds had been pretty stingy with the wedding details. Until now. Emily just took to her blog to share 50-plus photos from their wedding day—plus, a 10-minute wedding video and loads of insider details.

There’s so much good stuff in there, it looks like her site is freaking out, but if you sit and patiently hit “refresh” for a while, it should pop up. It eventually did for me. “I’m Back, as a Married Woman”>>

A Shiny, Chic New Way to Incorporate Balloons Into Your Wedding

Regular balloons and super-size globe balloons have definitely been done at weddings, but if you want to do either for your big day, I say, go for it. (I mean, white dresses and flowers have been done, too. We’re not reinventing the wedding wheel with every bride and groom.) But if you want a shiny new twist on latex balloons, check out these mylar pretties that popped { } up in my Instagram feed:

You can order the letters individually to spell anything you want (“love,” “married,” “bacon”—google “mylar balloon letters”) or there are kits to spell out specific words. Here’s “hooray.”

Thoughts on using balloons in your wedding pictures? What word would you pick for your wedding?

I think it’s super-cute. And I think the photo above has way more personality than it would if the bridesmaids were standing all stoically holding bouquets.

Low-Key Wedding Dresses That Won't Make You Look Like Bridal Barbie

Nothing against Barbie {Love your Instagram, doll! } I just didn’t want to wear half my weight in tulle, beading, or bows on my wedding day. At a shrimpy 5'2", I would’ve been swallowed whole by a “cupcake” wedding dress, so I opted for something suuuuuper simple; it strongly resembled the first wedding dress below. If you’re similarly put off by frou-frou wedding dresses, check out these five sleek, chic dresses from J.Crew. Another reason newlywed Lauren Conrad and I are soul sisters: She and her new husband, William Tell, chose the same honeymoon destination Rory and I did. Here’s a picture she just shared on Instagram.

Based on the pebbly beach in the background, I’d guess she’s on the Amalfi Coast. She also shared this pebbly beach shot yesterday:

Lauren Conrad’s Wedding Album: Let’s Overanalyze All 30-Plus Photos

$
0
0

It’s been suggested that I could write an entire post on every photo in Lauren Conrad’s wedding album, which Us Weekly just released. I thought that might be a teeny bit of overkill, but please join me while I review the photos, slide by slide.

Here’s a new photo from Lauren and William’s engagement sesh.

Slide 1) is a montage, so let’s proceed to 2) White-on-white-on-white wedding flowers—and that wedding dress with the 10-foot train. Love. 3) The photo from Us Weekly’s cover last week, so we already discussed. Moving on. 4) Her wedding shoes {Pretty! }, like her wedding dresses, were by Badgley Mischka. I think I found the exact pair>>5) The GORGEOUS illusion back on her first wedding dress.

6) The wedding party (which featured TEN bridesmaids, including Lo Bosworth!) looking ah-may-zing in Paper Crown bridesmaid dresses. 7) The bridesmaid bouquets—by Gilly Flowers & Events—were like mini versions of Lauren’s white-and-green bouquet. 8) A second shot of the bride and groom, this time in her second, dance-floor-ready wedding dress. 9) The bridesmaids. I’m pretty sure the ’maid on the bottom left is Lauren’s Paper Crown partner, Maura. (Lauren and Lo were her bridesmaids a few weeks ago!) 10) Pretty blush bridesmaid dresses, all in a row. It looks like every ‘maid had a different dress. “We took into account people’s shapes and common wedding colors,” said Lauren.

11) Lauren bounces on the bed in an all-white getting-ready gown. Us reports her getting-ready soundtrack included songs by Taylor Swift and Aretha Franklin. (Here’s her exact wedding reception playlist, if you’re curious!)12) OK, no bride gets her makeup done while halfway lying down on an all-white bed. This is clearly staged shot (with makeup artist Amy Nadine Clement), but it’s still lovely. 13) Here’s her 10-foot train all spread out. I hope we get to see it going down the aisle.* 14) The designers’ inspiration board, which I shared last week. 15) A close-up of two bridesmaids, Lo, and ‘maid-I-think-is-Maura.

*Spoiler alert: We don't. Tear.

16) That dreamy headpiece, which sort of reminds me of these by Jenny Packham. 17) The bride and groom, under the arch where they were married, wrote their own vows. 18) The couple’s whimsical wedding stationery was designed by Anna Bond of Rifle Paper Co. 19) The requisite photo of the sun setting behind the kissing couple. 20) The night before swapping vows, Lauren helped wedding planner/close pal Cassandra Herschenfeld wrap loaves of bread in paper. How does she make BREAD look cute?

21) Guests were greeted with vodka-spiked lemonade {Totally did that at my wedding!} and a hard-cider-brandy cocktail. 22) White-on-white-on-white reception. It’s one of my favorite wedding palettes for a reason. 23)“I bought some vases to do my own [floral] arrangements,” said Lauren. Because of COURSE she did. 24) Lauren and another friend, Hannah Skvarla, picked 300 apples to make FIFTY apple pies. “It was a lot, but I liked the idea of a home-baked dessert.” 25) No one’s surprised that Lauren Conrad has a vintage handkerchief collection, right?

26) The first dance, to Once’s version of “You're My Best Friend.” 27) I didn’t know I would one day fall in love with a wooden table. Today is that day. 28) A couch for two for the bride and groom! Why didn’t I think of that? 29) Even the bags at the hotel were picture-perfect. No boring bottled water here. 30) A close-up of a reception table. THAT CRYSTAL. I DIE.

31) Their wedding cake, from A Sweet Savory, was understated and petite. 32) Another cake shot, with the perfect (obviously) vintage-y cake topper. 33) The groom serenaded his new wife to Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” and the universe collectively went Awwwww!. 34) A little background on the wedding’s apple theme. (Hint: William Tell.) 35) Custom wedding playing cards. I’m so going to score a set on eBay. 36) And the picture-perfect sunset. Because of course the weather was sublime.

Thoughts on Lauren Conrad's wedding pictures? Which ideas will you copycat for your own wedding?

All of them? #nojudgment

P.S. Here's where Lauren and William are honeymooning, if you're not LC'd out yet.

The eagle, er, bride has landed: Amal Alamuddin—the soon-to-be Mrs. George Clooney—flew into Milan from London earlier today with her mother. Her groom announced earlier this month that the two would marry in Venice.

The bride arrived at the airport grinning ear to ear and toting, according to People, “a fair amount of luggage.” Details following their engagement have been scant, but it’s been reported Amal will wear an Alexander McQueen wedding dress and George will don an Armani tux. Walter Veltroni, the former mayor of Rome, will reportedly officiate the ceremony.

Who else is looking forward to George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin’s wedding?

I am. Clearly.

Eeps! Both had been spotted earlier this month without wedding rings; his ring finger was naked and hers was sporting her vintage Cartier engagement ring.

Holy light fixtures, Batman. Venice’s five-star Hotel Cipriani is being fitted with “crystal chandeliers and lavish place settings” as the prep moves into full swing ahead of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin’s wedding, which is reportedly happening Saturday. (Check out Us Weekly’s photo of the wedding prep and said chandeliers.)

Amal’s mother, Baria, and sister, Tala, have already checked into the 79-room hotel, as have more family members. A source told Us, “They seem excited about the festivities. I heard her mom say, ‘I can't believe it's actually here!’”*

*Does that ring a little untrue to anyone else? They’ve been engaged for six months.

Amal arrived in Milan yesterday, and she and her groom are expected to make their way to Venice today, along with their A-list guest list, including Matt Damon, Luciana Barroso, Rande Gerber, Cindy Crawford, and Bono. (Wedding guests will likely find a copy of the new U2 album downloaded to their iPhones during the rehearsal dinner. JK. I’m sure they all already unwittingly have it.)

Here’s how the rest of the wedding weekend will reportedly play out: “Lavish” rehearsal dinner at Hotel Cipriani tonight. Breakfast at the hotel’s Cip's Club or Oro restaurant tomorrow A.M. Everyone moves by boat to the the “seven-star”* Aman Canal Grande, where the ceremony will go down. Party at the Aman. Back to Hotel Cipriani for the after-party party, including fireworks. Day-after dinner at Cipriani, and then a civil ceremony on Monday. Whew.

*Seven stars? That seems superfluous.

Thoughts on George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin's wedding weekend?

I just want to see her wedding dress.

How Your BFF Really Feels on Your Wedding Day (Warning: You Might Cry!)

brides-logo

No matter how crazy you've driven your BFF with wedding-planning talk over the past year, the truth of the matter is she loves you and she legitimately can't wait to see you walk down the aisle. In fact, she'll probably get more secretly emotional about it than you will. So maybe she's not the sappiest chick on the planet or perhaps she just didn't get the chance to tell you yet, but here's what she's really thinking on one of the most special and important days of your life. Grab a tissue, brides, because now it's your turn to cry...tears of joy, of course!

41-paige-jones-photography-jen-goldie-real-wedding-0618

Full of gratitude
"Standing in the church pew with the other bridesmaids and watching my best friend walk down the aisle still brings a lump to my throat. I couldn't help but feel so much love and gratitude toward her. She inspires me because of her bravery: She's not afraid to love fiercely and also honestly. She's remarkably humble and downright genuine. She may not realize it, but she's an inspiration for me constantly." —Sharon

Bursting with happiness
"I was over the moon for my BFF, Sarah. I remember saying to her, 'I am so happy for you that it feels like it's me getting married!' I had seen her go through some pretty heavy heartbreak, and I had seen her with people who I knew did not deserve her. Ryan was one of the good guys, though, and her marrying him is something that will always be a highlight in my life. I know he will make her happy, and I will never have to worry about her and her heart again." —Paloma

Like a proud parent
"We agreed there would be no tears at my best friend's wedding because we didn't want to ruin our makeup, but when I saw her coming down the aisle, I almost lost it. She looked so beautiful. I started thinking about everything she had been through to get to that moment. I held it together; however, she has no idea how close I came to breaking that pact." —Simone

In love with love
"While my BFF Nicole's wedding was certainly perfect, the best part about it was the marriage that was the end result. Her groom, Jason, is top-notch, and I could not have even designed a more perfect guy for her! Their love is so genuine and sweet that they make an entire room fill up with light and happiness. They are the kind of couple that makes people believe in love, the kind of couple that makes people just love love!"—Ellen

Moved to tears
"Out of the four friends' weddings I've attended, I cried every time the bride walked down the aisle. I thought about our past, how we met, what we've been through, and some of our best memories that led me to be a part of her day." —Brittany

The bride and groom arrived in style: Earlier today George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin were ferried through Venice one of the city's water taxis—the aptly named Amore, of course—to Hotel Cipriani, where they hosted a small welcome gathering for guests ahead of their Saturday wedding. (Gardeners at the hotel planted hundreds of pink and white flowers in the days leading up to the welcome party.) Amal wore a black and white Dolce & Gabbana dress and her groom wore a grey suit.

Also spotted in water taxis: Cindy Crawford and husband Rande Gerber and Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso. (And on the water taxis: A flag bearing George and Amal's wedding mongram: A script A nestled up against a blocky G. Check it out on People.) Anna Wintour arrived in Italy via private jet, and Ellen Barkin, George’s co-star in Ocean’s Thirteen, was also spotted in Venice.

Later that night, the bride was toasted by more than a dozen female friends.

Rather than write a new post every time I get a little bit of #ClooneyWedding news, I figured I’d start this post and update as the news rolls in. Here goes nothing.

clooney-wedding-pictures-amal-alamuddin

Let's talk about the future Mrs. Clooney's always-on-point style.

  • Here’s the reporter for Vanity Fair Italia.

  • Bono and his wife, Ali, have arrived in Venice ahead of the wedding.

  • More scoop by way of the BBC: Due to paparazzi commotion following George and Amal’s gondola, a gondola driver fell into the canal last night. (Apparently this is a fairly common thing though.) The bride slept last night at the Aman Canal Grande, reported site of today’s festivities. The wedding is reportedly bringing lots of jobs to Venice. And security is “huge,” and may involve microchips.

  • Anyone else feeling claustrophobic?

  • Wedding guests in tuxedos and floor-length gowns are reportedly having pre-ceremony drinks in the garden area at the Hotel Cipriani. And a tunnel has been erected out front.

  • Hahaha.

  • Vogue's Anna Wintour has arrived.

  • Amal's mother just arrived.

  • And Bill Murray! (Obviously I have no way of confirming who these blurs are, so I'm trusting the Twittersphere here.)

  • The groom is in the canal! (Or his boat is, anyway.)

  • The suspense is killing me. They MUST be married by now. Or close to it.

Stay tuned for more details as they roll in. What are you most looking forward to today? Wedding dress? Celebrity guests? Bacon? (I’m assuming not everyone’s as pumped for the wedding as I am.)

Here are Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney just before their civil ceremony.

George’s longtime Venetian boat driver, Alessandro Greco, joined the bride and groom to serve as a witness, People reports. The civil ceremony was conducted by close friend and former Rome mayor Walter Veltroni, who also officiated their wedding ceremony on Saturday. (The two were married on Saturday at Aman Canal Grande in Venice, if you missed the news. Here are all the details leading up to the main event.)

So everyone who thought the wedding was a fake-out to lure Hollywood hotshots to Venice for an impromptu summit on climate change, it appears you’re wrong.

Thoughts on George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin’s civil ceremony?
