5 Wedding Hair and Makeup Lessons We Can Learn from the 2013 Met Gala

Our heads are still spinning from all the crazy punk-glam looks we saw at Monday's Met Gala. There was much fresh beauty inspiration to be had, and I think brides can learn a few things from the fierce moments we saw on the red carpet (as can wedding guests—I mean, Amy already decided to copy Jessica Alba's updo for a wedding this weekend).

Here are five lessons I think brides can take away from the 2013 Met Gala.

1. Eyeliner is overrated. Oh fine, it's not. We all know eyeliner is amazing. BUT, skipping the bold liner can be a statement unto itself, as Marion Cotillard showed. She traced her eyes in gold and champagne shimmer instead. This makeup would be so dreamy and ethereal for a bride.

2. Make sure your face matches the rest of you.Julianne Hough looks so radiant I'm almost blinded by this photo, but I'm also slightly distracted by how much darker her body is than her face. A few factors that can contribute to this: Using daily SPF moisturizer on your face but not your body, super-exfoliating your face but not your body, and wearing makeup that strongly reflects light when a camera flash goes off. All stuff to keep in mind.

3. Shine can be a hair accessory. With all the focus on texture and hold in updos, sometimes we overlook the obvious: Shiny hair is really pretty, especially in flash photos. Just look at Lindsey Vonn here—her hair shine is basically her best accessory. Talk about keeping it simple.

4. Don't shy away from statement nails. Also, this pose always makes you look like a model. I think Blake Lively's glam black-and-white nail art (get a closer peek here) would look so sophisticated on a bride. And note her hands-on-hips pose; it may feel overdramatic while you're doing it, but just do it, and put some attitude in. You'll totally look like a model. (Work that wedding dress while you got it on!)

5. A huge smile really does make everything OK. No matter what disaster may occur on your wedding day (hair malfunction, seating-plan fiasco) resolve to smile through it. Kate Upton admitted she missed the memo on the Met Gala's punk theme, wearing a green dress with a totally different vibe, but instead of looking awkward, she smiled and looked spectacular. You're paying a ton of money for wedding pics—make sure they're happy ones.

Did you take any beauty inspiration from this year's Met Gala pics?
