“My Boyfriend’s About to Propose! But Should I Say Yes?”

jonathan-nikki-proposal

Writes Save the Date reader Izzy:

My boyfriend and I have been dating for around a year, and he has said he wants to get engaged soon. This would be my second engagement. The first one ended terribly, and I have trust issues as a result.

My boyfriend is a musician and plays almost every instrument. He’s really into social media and obsesses over any “famous” person he meets. His ex is a professional singer who’s been on tour. It makes me feel like I’m not good enough—but his ex is.

I’m really nervous about getting engaged. My boyfriend’s a wonderful man, but I don’t want to get hurt again. If he proposes, should I say yes?

Here are my thoughts:

In short: No.

Every couple who gets engaged is taking a leap of faith on some level, but it sounds to me like you need to work out some personal stuff before you jump.

Regardless of whether your reasons are valid, you don’t trust your boyfriend. Having a ring and planning a wedding isn’t going to make your trust issues magically disappear. If anything, they’ll get worse. Different people need different things from their partners, but every couple needs trust. It’s truly the foundation of your relationship; without it, anything else you have will eventually crumble.

Assuming you can’t work through your trust issues on your own, I think seeking professional help is probably best. The next time your boyfriend brings up getting engaged, tell him, “I adore you, but I need to work on me before I work on us.” If he’s truly wonderful, he’ll let you do that.

Ladies, what do you think? Should Izzy get engaged and hope for the best? Or should she hold off?

Have a wedding-y dilemma of your own? Email me!

And tell me, when did YOU get engaged?

Brides Reveal Their Biggest Wedding-Style Regrets

brides-logo

No matter how many dresses you try on or hairstyles you pin, your wedding-day look never turns out precisely the way you pictured it in your head. Sometimes it's for the better and other times, like in this case, the worse. Blame it on the weather, blame it on Pinterest, or blame it on that makeup artist you know you shouldn't have hired to begin with. We asked real brides to reveal their biggest wedding-style regret.

2-new-bhldn-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-bridal-market-1114

Not wearing a bra
"The bridal shop wanted to sew cups into my dress, versus me wearing a bra. The cups turned out to not be enough support, and it shows in every picture. My dress sits oddly and I look saggy!" —Kirsten

Being frugal with my makeup
"I wish I would have treated myself like more of a princess. I'm the frugal type, so I ended up going with a more affordable makeup artist to try and save some money. There was another girl who was amazing and that I loved. Until this day, I still regret not booking her." —Carrie

Buying a beaded dress
"The dress I wore was the most beautiful dress and I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, but little did I know how heavy it was going to be! It was a super-hot day in mid-September and it was an outdoor wedding. Boy, did I sweat like crazy in that heavy, beaded gown!" —Theresa

Choosing the wrong hairstyle
"It was humid the day of my wedding, which is pretty out of the ordinary for where I live. My hair fell flat and was frizzy. I had always envisioned really romantic curls, so it was slightly disappointing when I got my pictures back."—Gretchen

Wanting everything to be over-the-top
"I was one of those brides that fell into thinking I had to have more/better/different and regretted the decision almost immediately. My hair was overdone (I'm talking hundreds of bobby pins and loads of hairspray), and my makeup was over-the-top (fake lashes all around, layers of foundation and blush); it was all too much. I was uncomfortable, and my skin and face felt thick and unnatural, not to mention the fact that my hair didn't move for 12 hours. While that might sound like a good thing, it didn't look like a good thing." —Brandi

Rocking really high heels
"I wore four-inch heels at my wedding and completely regretted it. The photos looked fabulous, but my feet were absolutely killing me the entire time. I actually ended up changing into a pair of white flip-flops for the reception because I was in so much pain." —Cassie

Did you have any style regrets on your big day?

3 Easy Ways to Keep Your Wedding Guests Happy—and the 1 Thing Every Guest Hates

$
0
0

Sure, your wedding day is all about you and your groom, but it’s also about the dozens (or hundreds) or people who are there to celebrate with you. Here are three easy ways to keep your wedding guests happy.

guests-ruining-my-wedding-0710

1. Keep the drinks flowing. It doesn’t need to be top-shelf open bar all night; just make sure your guests don’t have to wait around to get a drink. Have drink dispensers outside your ceremony (we served vodka-spiked lemonade and cucumber-infused water) and leave some self-serve options by the bar: bottles of beer, water, and mini bottles of champagne. (Don’t forget the festive straws!)

2. Fill them in on your traditions. If your guests don’t know what’s going on during your ceremony, they’re going to get bored. If people might not be familiar with your culture or religion, use the program to fill them in.

3. Minimize the speeches. Don’t let your dance floor turn into an impromptu open-mic night. Let your DJ or band leader know ahead of time who you’ve asked to speak, and don’t let your designated speakers pass the mic to your tipsy aunt.

While we’re on the subject of keeping guests happy, here’s one thing to avoid: Don’t have a super-long break between your ceremony and reception. Sure, there are some guests who are happy to go with the flow, but most will be annoyed if there’s more than an hour stretch where they have to entertain themselves—especially if you have a lot of guests who are out-of-towners.

What do you have love as a wedding guest? And what drives you bananas?

The 8 Most Awesome Celebrity Weddings of 2014

$

Loads of celebrities swapped vows in 2014, but which celeb weddings were the most memorable? Here’s my countdown of the eight most awesome:

8. Solange Knowles& Alan Ferguson
1-solange-wedding-pictures-wedding-dress-1116

Bey’s baby sister kept her engagement way under wraps: We didn’t find out that she and longtime boyfriend Alan Ferguson were set to marry until a week before they swapped vows. Solange scored major fashion points for her bridal trousseau, which included the most impeccable caped wedding pantsuit.

7. Olivia Palermo& Johannes Huebl

This relatively low-key summer wedding sparked an instantaneous (and utterly original) bridal trend: wedding shorts with overskirts. Here’s my favorite take on the trend—one romper, three ways—from Elizabeth Stuart.

6. Neil Patrick Harris& David Burtka
neil-patrick-harris-david-burtka

After being engaged for almost a decade, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka were married in September in Italy. Pam Fryman, the longtime director of How I Met Your Mother, officiated. And the couple’s twins, Harper Grace and Gideon Scott, took place in the ceremony.

5. Jessica Simpson& Eric Johnson
jessica-simpson-family

Engaged since November of 2010, Jessica and Eric twice delayed their wedding before marrying this summer. First they waited to welcome daughter Maxwell Drew, who was born in 2012, and then again for the arrival of son Ace Knute last summer. Fun fact: Jessica’s gold wedding dress was designed by Carolina Herrera, who also designed Olivia Palermo’s bridal ensemble.

4. Kim Kardashian&Kaye West

It was the wedding heard ’round the world: Before Kim’s butt broke the internet, her international wedding to Kanye West almost did the same. With 2.4 million likes, the couple’s “first kiss” picture is still the most-liked picture in Instagram’s history.

3. Lauren Conrad& William Tell

Save the Date readers were smitten with Lauren Conrad and William Tell’s apple-themed nuptials: from the bride’s dress and its 10-foot train to the bridesmaid dresses from Lauren’s own Paper Crown label to the white-on-white reception. I spent an entire afternoon overanalyzing the 30-plus photos in Lauren and William’s wedding album.

Annnnnd it’s a two-way tie for the No. 1 spot. Both weddings shocked me (for different reasons) and both were insanely awesome in their own ways. So here’s your No. 1. And your other No. 1.

1. Angelina Jolie&Brad Pitt
angelina-jolie-wearing-tux-bafta-awards

Together for nine years and engaged for two, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie could have gone the rest of their lives without getting married, and no one would have been surprised. But marry they did, in a small, ultra-private wedding in France, surrounded by their six children—who also helped design Angelina’s wedding dress.

1. George Clooney&Amal Alamuddin
clooney-wedding-news-george-amal-alamuddin-civil-ceremony-0929

When news broke that permabachelor George Clooney was engaged to some lawyer, I didn’t flinch. Because I assumed it was tabloid rumor. But the rumor was true—and silver fox George went ahead and shocked the world when he married for the second time in September. Oh, and that lawyer, Amal Alamuddin, gets more headlines than her groom these days, thanks to her ultra-sophisticated style. (A bag was just named after her.)

Newly Single Selena Gomez's Super-Sweet Reaction to Her Best Friends’ Engagement

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have been on-again/off-again more than a light switch—current status: off—so it would be understandable if she felt a little sour-grapes-y while watching her best friends get engaged. I mean, I know what it’s like to be twentysomething and single during engagement season, and let’s just say it wasn’t a picnic. (One particularly tear-soaked New Year’s Eve comes to mind.) But Selena was there when her “best friend couple”—model Marianne Fonseca and Jesy James McKinney—got engaged over the weekend, and her reaction couldn’t have been sweeter.

How sweet/gracious is she?

A Kick-Ass Gift for Any Brides on Your “Nice” List

I love the idea of gifts that give back, but I’m not going to gift my friends, like, wonky hemp bracelets or dilapidated dream-catchers just for the sake of charity. But here’s perfect-for-brides charitable gift I’d be psyched to give, even if all the profits went to a greedy corporation:

1-gifts-for-brides

Feed Bridal Bag, $60.

It’s a super-cute take on the classic Feed bags, which I love, AND buying this bag provides one child with micronutrient powder for one year. (Hence the “1” on the back.)

And look at the inside.

So perfect for carrying to all your wedding-y appointments. And I just love the pockets.

There’s also a pouch that would be great to throw inside if she’s been really nice. (And buying it provides 15 school meals, so you kind of have to. It’s CHARITY.)

Feed Bridal Pouch, $35.

Would you carry this bag? Would you gift it to a friend?

How to Pull Off a Boho-Chic Wedding Without Looking Like a Slob #nailedit

Let’s dissect: A white flower crown for the bride and bold blooms for her friends. Unfussy braids in everyone’s hair. Straight-out-of-Woodstock bridesmaid dresses. And yet, it’s all very well-considered. (Note: everyone’s matching bracelets.) No one looks messy or unkempt—which is an easy line for a flower-child bride to cross. This boho-chic parade didn’t happen by accident.

Any photographer can stage a gorgeous wedding picture, but how often does Mother Nature step in and craft the perfect photo for the bride and groom? This picture would have been pretty if the photographer had cropped out the trees above—but thankfully he didn’t. Accidental heart!

This Chic Golden Wedding Dress Is as Festive as a Glass of Champagne

I was looking through wedding dresses for an entirely different post when I stumbled across this wedding-worthy dress, which I just have to share.

1-gold-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-1211

Teri Jon Swiss Dot Tulle Gown from Saks Fifth Avenue, $1,060.

The store calls it Swiss dot fabric, but in my experience, Swiss dot is more uniform, with the dots in straight, uniform rows. These dots are kind of scattered and random, and it looks like there’s a little bit of sparkle mixed in.

Let’s go in for a closer look.

2-gold-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-1211

Doesn’t it remind you of a glass of champagne? I'm loving it with the model’s red lip too. It couldn’t be more perfect for a New Year’s Eve wedding.

Would you wear this golden dress for your wedding?

I totally would. And I would totally get married on New Year’s Eve.

The Engagement Ring Eddie Redmayne Gave Hannah Bagshawe, and the British Ring Trend That’s Catching On

Eddie Redmayne just stepped out for The Theory of Everything premiere in London with fiancee Hannah Bagshawe—and her new engagement ring. (I would hate that suit on anyone else, but he looks insanely dapper, no?)

1-eddie-redmayne-hannah-bagshawe-engagement-ring-pictures-celebrity-weddings-1211

But let’s focus in on what’s important here: that ring. Looks like a round solitaire in a four-prong setting with some diamonds set in the band. I’d guess it’s around 2.5 carats, max, and it looks perfect on her hands.

2-eddie-redmayne-hannah-bagshawe-engagement-ring-pictures-celebrity-weddings-1211

I love how A-list Brits just aren’t buying into the whole doorknob-size engagement ring thing. Keira Knightley’s engagement ring is a modest round solitaire, and Zayn Malik picked a reasonably sized engagement ring for Perrie Edwards too. (Hers is the sparkliest, with a trio of diamonds, but it’s probably still no more than three carats, total.) And Hollywood might just be catching on: Both Mila Kunis' and Emma Roberts' engagement rings show some restraint on the part of their men. (See their rings here.) Obviously famous people earn their $$$ and can spend it as they see fit. But the trend stateside had been rings so big you almost need to wear them on two fingers, so I’m glad things are swinging in the other direction.

Thoughts on Hannah Bagshawe’s engagement ring from Eddie Redmayne? Do you think the engagement rings have gotten out of control in Hollywood?

A Wedding Nail Idea So Minimalist It's Almost Subversive—and I Think You'll Love It

$
0
0

At last night's very white and wedding-y Maison Valentino couture show in NYC, models wore this clean, minimalistic nail look, and all I could think was, how perfect as a fresh idea for brides? Their perfectly manicured fingertips were oh-so-subtly enhanced with a sheer, cream-color polish that's just enough to hide any flaws: Jin Soon Tulle.

For so long, the French manicure was the standard-issue wedding nail look. And although that has definitely changed in recent times, with brides choosing to wear bright statement nail colors like red and pink, I think the idea of wearing almost-nude nails like these gets overlooked. Sometimes it's the simplest choice that looks the most beautiful, and at your wedding, it can be nice to keep the focus on other details, like your ring and your bouquet.

Would any of you go for minimalist, nude wedding nails, or are you excited to make more of a statement? How many of you would still prefer to highlight your tips with a French mani? Share your thoughts below!

4 Unexpected Wedding Venues, and Why You’ll Love or Hate Them

$
0
0

Anyone can get married in a country club or an event space, but most brides and grooms don’t want their big day to feel like any old wedding. Here are four wedding venues that are a little less “by the book”—and why you’ll either love or hate them.

YOUR PARENTS’ BACKYARD
1-unique-wedding-venues-1211
YOU’LL LOVE When we first started wedding-planning, I had my heart set on getting married at my mom and stepdad’s house. I mean, Hi, view. I liked the idea of creating a wedding “space” where the wasn’t one before, and having complete control over every little detail.
YOU’LL HATE You really have to worry about EVERY little detail. Every fork, every napkin, every glass, every toilet has to be brought in. And you—as in, the bride and groom—have to worry about noise ordinances and serving alcohol in a way you just don’t with a venue that’s held thousands of weddings before yours. In the end, it was just TOO much for me to deal with.

A WINERY
2-unique-wedding-venues-1211

I know I use this photo way too often. #lazy

YOU’LL LOVE This is where we wound up getting married, at Jonathan Edwards Winery in North Stonington, Connecticut. Rory worked (and still works ) at Food & Wine, so it felt very “us.” I loved that our entire wedding was outside. (There was a tent for the reception, but the floor—except for the dance floor area—was grass.)
YOU’LL HATE We looked at several wineries before picking Jonathan Edwards, and more than one didn’t have an alternative space for inclement weather. So that’s definitely something to ask about. Also, most wineries will only let you serve their wines at the reception, and bottles from a small, boutique winery are a lot spendier than the “house red” at an event space.

THE ZOO
3-unique-wedding-venues-1211
YOU’LL LOVE You guys might remember my friends Jackie and Andy’s wedding at the Bronx Zoo in 2012. Jackie had SO much fun doing safari-chic, and the wedding was definitely memorable because of that.
YOU’LL HATE Rory and I also looked at a zoo event space, which was lovely, but at the zoo we checked out, it felt like there was too much of a disconnect. Like, it wasn’t a zoo-themed event space; it was an event space in the middle of a zoo. It just felt weird. (At the Bronx Zoo, the event space is the old Lion House. So cool!)

A MUSEUM
4-unique-wedding-venues-1211
YOU’LL LOVE We looked a museum venue too. (We look at a LOT of venues!) I loved the idea of my guests wandering a museum, enjoying the art during cocktail hour. (That picture is from the American Museum of Natural History, by the way. And you CAN host a wedding there!)
YOU’LL HATE Then I remembered who my actual guests were—a loud crowd who loves to dance—and that just seemed weird. Plus, museum venues are often extra strict in an effort to preserve their art or their artifacts. At the museum we looked at, red wine wasn’t allowed.

What’s your dream wedding venue? Which of these is your favorite?

How to Clean Your Engagement Ring at Home (and What Not to Do)

There are few things more mesmerizing than watching your engagement ring sparkle and dance in the light, so it's only natural to want to maintain that bling by giving your ring regular cleanings.

6-new-diamond-engagement-rings-blue-nile-1104

A gorgeous Blue Nile engagement ring

But the only thing worse than a ring that's lost its luster is a ring that's damaged due to improper care. So before you get too wrapped up in wacky cleaning hacks and old wives' tales, we tapped Mark Mann, the director of Global Jewelry Manufacturing Arts at the GIA for his professional advice on how to clean your jewelry safely and what to avoid at all costs.

First, determine what kind of gunk has gotten on your ring, says Mann. "If you're very active outdoors or in the kitchen and there's a hard compacted layer of oil or dirt, it's best to get it cleaned at the jewelers using professional-grade products that will restore the brilliance of the stone safely."

However, if your ring has been dirtied by common cosmetics—for example, hairspray, lotion, makeup, or perfume—a simple at-home cleaning should be sufficient. "The best way to clean your ring is to make a solution with warm water (almost hot) and dishwashing soap. Soak your ring for about 20 to 40 minutes, gently brush the stone with a very soft toothbrush, and then rinse under warm running water. If needed, repeat." [Glamour note: Our own Kim Fusaro—and Drew Barrymore!—uses vodka.]

As for substances that you should never use to clean your ring, stay away from any household cleaners such as bleach, chlorine, and acetone, advises Mann. "These harsh chemicals can break down some of the base metals in your ring. Also never use any kind of abrasive products such as toothpaste, baking soda, or any powdered cleaners, which can easily scratch metals—particularly gold."

Lastly, also avoid at-home ultrasonic jewelry cleaning machines, especially if your ring features pavé set stones, says Mann. "If one of the prongs is weakened or if there's the slightest error in workmanship, the vibrations from an ultrasonic machine can dislodge a stone," he warns. "Your safest bet for ultrasonic cleaning is to take it to the jeweler, where professionals can test the security of the settings first—or fix it should anything come loose."

Beyoncé's Wise Words on Marriage Will Banish Any and All Wedding Anxieties

I just sat through all 12 minutes of Beyoncé's Yours and Mine video and kind of feel like we're officially close pals—it's a lot of intimate black-and-white video with Bey's voice on top of it all, reading musings on life and celebrity that kind of feel like a diary entry. The most interesting part to me was when she talked about marriage and what it means to her.

beyonce-jay-z-together-video

"People feel like they lose something when they get married, but it doesn't have to be that way. There's nothing more exciting about having a witness to your life," she says in one section.

"It's OK to depend on someone. It's actually what we're supposed to do—we're supposed to depend on each other. And when you find the person you trust and you love and you feel is going to respect you and take all of the shit you have and turn it around and bring out the best in you, it feeds you. It is the most powerful thing you can ever feel in your life."

It's so frank and real-girl that I feel like I'm hearing advice from an older sister, not a mega celebrity. I love the words about depending on your partner too—it's the same sentiment I've heard in many a wedding reading but without being hidden in metaphors or allegories.

Who gave you the best advice about marriage? What was it?

This German Celebrity Bride Nailed “Winter Wedding Chic” in Fur and a Flower Crown

I don’t know much German pop star Gil Ofarim—it seems he’s on the German spin-off of The Voice—but when I found pictures of him and his bride/baby mama, Verena Brock, from their wedding earlier today, I had to click through for a closer look:

1-gil-ofarim-wedding-pictures-verena-brock-wedding-dress-wedding-gown-1215

Here’s an unobstructed look at the front:

A flower crown isn’t the first accessory that comes to mind for a winter bride, but since it’s paired with a fur, it doesn’t feel too summery. (I don’t know if the fur is real or fake, but if I were the bride, it would be faux.)

Thoughts on Verena Brock’s wedding look? Would you copycat it as a winter bride?

My imaginary next wedding would SO happen on New Year’s Eve—with piles of faux fur.

How to Wear 2 Wedding Dresses Without Spending a Fortune

The bride doing a wardrobe change midparty is almost as common at modern weddings as, you know, swapping vows. But the cost of buying multiple wedding dresses can really add up. Here’s how the bride on a budget can do two looks:

LWD (Little White Dress)* + Inexpensive Overskirt

* An LWR (little white romper) would obviously be MAJ.

I was clicking around the Space 46 Boutique {Feeling like a need a New Year’s Eve tulle skirt—yes or no? } when I stumbled across its collection of bridal skirts. What looks like a pretty wedding dress…
1-two-for-one-wedding-dresses-1214

…Is an LWD with an overskirt that will set you back only $122.

2-two-for-one-wedding-dresses-1214

The Sona in Ivory, $122.

Here are 13 under-layers I’d pair it with.

I feel like the bottom of the dress or romper needs to be pretty fitted, otherwise the lower half of the overskirt might look deflated.

Click here for all of Space 46's bridal skirts. I'm partial to the Sona. (Peek-a-shoe!)

Do you want two dresses for your wedding? Or does one suit you just fine? (And do I need a NYE tulle skirt?)

7 Wedding Things You Don’t Need to Waste Your Money On

The costs that come with planning a wedding will add up quickly, especially if you feel the need to splurge on every little thing. Here are seven things you DON’T need to spring for.

how-to-save-money-on-your-wedding-1215

INVITING EVERYONE FROM YOUR OFFICE—AND YOUR MOM’S OFFICE Your list has to end somewhere, and I suggest drawing the line at coworkers, unless you’re truly close friends.

BOOKING A SUPER-FANCY VENUE If you pick a posh venue, every price tag—from the corkage charge to the cake-cutting fee (SRSLY)—is going to be incrementally more expensive. Plus, fancy-pants venues might not have bargain options: Top-shelf booze might be all they serve, and they may work with only the most expensive florist in town.

UPGRADING THE CHAIRS OR LINENS Repeat after me: No one will notice if you stick with less-fancy chairs—NO ONE—and white linens work just fine.

HAVING A MONSTER WEDDING PARTY Every member of your wedding party will probably set you back around $300: Each gets a bouquet or boutonniere ($50), wedding-specific accessories, like jewelry or a tie ($50), and a gift ($100). Plus, it’s only fair to let the members of your wedding party bring a plus-one ($100). I think it’s smarter to stick with just a few of your very closest friends and spend the extra cash chipping in for their wedding day hair or bridesmaid dresses.

BUYING MULTIPLE WEDDING DRESSES You can get two looks for less than the price of a single gown. See: Exactly How to Wear 2 Wedding Dresses Without Spending a Fortune. (Or do it the old-fashioned way and stick with just one dress!)

PERSONALIZING *EVERYTHING* You don’t need your wedding logo on your cocktail napkins and your dinner menus and your chair slipcovers. On a similar note, you can probably skip the custom signage. (I’m looking at you, “Here Comes Your Bride, Uncle Joe!” flag.)

GIVING FAVORS FOR THE SAKE OF FAVORS If there’s something meaningful or on-theme that you want to give your guests as a send-off—and you can find it at a reasonable price—by all means, go for it. But don’t bother wrapping Jordan almonds in tulle just because you feel like you have to give something.

What’s the biggest waste of money you’ve seen at a wedding?

I have a dear friend (who will remain nameless) who sprung for the gold tablecloths. The were NOT cheap.
