5 Tips for Doing Perfectly Romantic Retro Eyeliner and Rose Lipstick for a Wedding

$

While Naya Rivera's new blond hair may have stolen the spotlight at last night's People's Choice Awards, I fell in love with Kat Dennings' beautiful hair and makeup—it was oh so very wedding-worthy, even topped off with a twinkling crown of a headband.

kat-dennings-peoples-choice-awards-makeup

That perfect retro eyeliner, and that lip color—I just had to find out the products and tricks involved. Et voila!—here's all the information we need to copy this look, straight from celebrity makeup artist Lauren Andersen, who dolled Kat up for the awards show.

1. First, Lauren groomed Kat’s brows with Votre Vu brow wax.

2. For that neat swoop of liquid eyeliner, Lauren chose Avon SuperShock Gel Eyeliner in Blackout—it's a pencil shape, which you might find much easier to grip and control than a brush.

3. Next, Lauren applied Ardell Fashion Lashes #122, which are full/long yet fluttery and soft, and then painted on Avon Mega Effects Mascara (which has a really unique brush that makes lashes super dense—click the link to see).

4. She gave Kat's cheeks a "fresh ginger glow" by applying Avon Ideal Luminous Blush in Coral Radiance right on the apples (to find your apples, make a big smile, then put the blush on the highest point of your cheeks).

5. And finally, the name of that amazing lip color: Avon Ultra Color Absolute Lipstick in Radiant Raisin.

Do any of you dream of wearing this eyeliner/lipstick scheme to your own wedding or a wedding you're attending soon?

Melissa Sweet is my favorite wedding dress designer for a few reasons: 1) She designed my wedding dress, the Lia. 2) She has a to-die-for line for David's Bridal, which means her gorgeous gowns are accessible to the average bride. And 3) 100 percent of net profits from the sales of her collection of fancy wedding dresses Melissa Sweet Sacred go to charity. Amazing on all counts. So clearly Melissa is up to her eyeballs in everything wedding dresses. Here's what she says will be hot for 2014:

1. WATERCOLOR PATTERNS

Inspired by Impressionism, these free-form patterns can be subtle or bold. LEFT: Heidi Elnora. RIGHT: Douglas Hannant.

2. SUBTLY COLORED UNDERLAYERS
2-2014-wedding-dress-trends

Traditional colors for brides—think ivory and white—pop against a subtly colored underlayer. Modern Trousseau's Annie dress features petal pink; champagne underlayers, which warm up your skin, will also be popular.

3. CORSET DETAILS

Exposed boning and lace-up back details add visual interest to a strapless neckline. Junko Yoshioka.

Jamie Chung took her brand-spankin'-new engagement ring from Bryan Greenberg out and about in LA today—read about their engagement here—and she was kind enough to flash it to a camera. Obviously we're going in for a closer look:

I'm going to guess it's a 4- or 5-carat diamond in a halo. I'm not sure what it's called when there are two bands that come together below the diamond, but I feel like it looks like this Kwiat ring, plus a halo:

3 Easy Ways to Personalize Your First Dance at Your Wedding

Quite possibly the best opportunity to show off your personality as a couple is with a killer first dance. But with so many other decisions at hand—floral arrangements, what type of meal you'll serve, heck, even picking out your escort cards—finding the right song and the right moves can make choosing "At Last" and winging it when the time comes seem more and more appealing. Whether or not you want to recreate the famous scene from Dirty Dancing or not, here are three simple ways to make your first dance unique, special, and most importantly fun.

wedding-first-dance

Do It with Feeling
It's a romantic moment, but you don't have to pick a classically romantic song, says Daisy O'Dell, a Los Angeles-based DJ. "Choose something that has meaning to you, even if it's the Charlie Brown theme," recommends O'Dell. "My first dance was 'If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out,' by Cat Stevens. It's from one of our favorite films, Harold and Maude, so it felt special."

Choreograph It
Doing the Dancing with the Stars thing can be a great bonding experience. "Just keep it brief and fun, and don't get in over your heads," says New York event planner Desiree Spinner. "No one wants to see a couple moving their lips and counting steps."

Don't Dance
If you're not a fan of the spotlight, you can diffuse attention by inviting your friends or the kids to share the dance floor. Or upend the tradition entirely with a slideshow, trivia game, or DJ battle: National DJ company Scratch Weddings offers lessons for brides and grooms.

Hayden Panettiere looked striking in a Tom Ford dress at the Golden Globes last night, but of course all eyes (or at least my eyes!) were on her ring finger. Thankfully her manicurist, Alexandra Jachno of Labnails, snapped the up-close photo of Hayden's engagement ring we've been waiting for. Ta-da!

Let's go in for a closer look, just for kicks.

Ice, ice, baby.

Hayden asked Alexandra—who also polished Lizzy Caplan—to help her choose a nail polish to match her Tom Ford lipstick, a nude opaque with a hint of pink. They picked Zoya in Amanda, which looked perfect on the red carpet. I also think it would be lovely for a bride.

Thoughts on Hayden Panettiere's engagement ring? Are you loving her mani too?

Hayden Panettiere's ring finger wasn't the only one I was stalking at the Golden Globes: I was also hoping to catch a glimpse of newly engaged Emma Roberts' engagement ring. (I told you last week that she and American Horror Story costar Evan Peters are set to wed.) Sadly, photographers failed to get right up in her ring business, which I lamented last night:

But here's a zoomed-in look from the best pic I could find:

Emma herself shared a left-hand shot before the Globes, but her engagement ring was juuuuust out of the frame. So cruel.

Spring and Summer Brides: Add THIS to Your Beauty Regimen Now, Have Baby-Soft Feet on Your Wedding Day—I Swear!

how-to-get-rid-of-nasty-feet-0114

Your celebrity foot-speration: Reese Witherspoon.

When loyal Save the Date reader mamaworker mentioned yesterday that she'd recently gotten one of those ill-advised treatments where they razor off all the dead skin on your feet, it reminded me of a beauty tip I've been meaning to share.

As a marathon runner and a high-heel wearer, I used to also say yes when I was getting a pedi and they offered to razor the dead skin. Yes, I know it's potentially unsafe and majorly gross, but my unrazored feet were even grosser, in spite of all the add-on "callus remover treatments" that did absolutely nothing.

But I recently found something that keeps my feet baby-smooth, and it doesn't involve letting germ-infested razors near my feet, so hooray!

After getting a hard-core pedi that, yes, involved a foot razor, I was whining to Petra that my feet would never be this smooth again. Her recommendation: Slather on Amlactin Foot Cream—which contains alpha-hydroxy acids—before bed, and sleep wearing socks. She's been raving about her foot-softening solution for years, but I never thought it would be hard-core enough for my heavily callused feet, which were like at, like, Defcon 9 in banged-up-pedness. But I'm thrilled—and SHOCKED—to report that two months later, it totally worked. I'm still running and wearing heels, but I have NO dead-skin buildup.

Guys, I cannot rave enough about this. It takes a grand total of 12 seconds a night, and I can pretty much guarantee it will work for even the gnarliest of feet. And if you add this 12-second habit to your routine now, your feet will be baby-soft on your wedding day. One less thing to worry about. (And one less thing that might go wrong pre-wedding. You don't want an infected foot-razor cut—gag! gag! gag!—forcing you down the aisle on crutches!)

Are you keeping up your feet for your wedding day? Are you worried about having gnarly feet in your wedding shoes?

The Top 10 Bachelorette Party Destinations in 2014—Plus, a Cool Online Tool for Planning Your Weekend

07-bridesmaids

Where bachelorette parties used to be one wild night on the town, more brides are using their bachelorette as an excuse for a real girlfriends' getaway with their 'maids. Both party options (one day vs. several) have their merits, but I'm a fan of the mini-vacay, when money permits. With that in mind, here are the 10 hottest destinations for bachelorette parties in 2014, according to the clever gal behind The Bach, an online tool that helps streamline bachelorette party planning while you're busy with, you know, everything else that comes with planning a wedding (and having a life).

1. LAS VEGAS
Fabulous Las Vegas is still the number one destination for both bachelor and bachelorette parties. Head here for rowdy pool parties, elaborate clubs, lively casinos, fantastic restaurants, and entertaining shows.

2. MIAMI
If your group loves warm weather and exciting nightlife, Miami is the perfect destination. Bachelorette parties flock to South Beach for wild pool parties, white sand beaches, and some of the steamiest nightclubs in the country.

3. NEW YORK CITY
NYC is known for its amazing nightlife and award-winning restaurants. With a huge variety of unique daytime activity options to add, your bachelorette group can do anything from a trapeze class to a sail around Manhattan.

4. NEW ORLEANS
If the bride is looking for a truly rowdy party scene, nothing compares to the bars on Bourbon Street. By day, your group can try flavorful creole cuisine, admire the distinct NOLA architecture, and enjoy some great jazz.

5. NAPA VALLEY
Napa Valley is all about drinking in style and relaxing over incredible wine-country views. Here you can taste some of the best wines in the country, relax at world-class spas, do a river cruise along the Napa River, or try something adventurous, like a hot-air balloon ride.

6. AUSTIN
As the live music capital of the world, Austin is the perfect destination if the bride loves catching shows. During the day, go tubing or rent a boat, and don't miss out on Austin's delicious Tex-Mex and barbecue spots.

7. CHARLESTON
The always-charming Charleston offers beautiful architecture, delicious Southern-style cooking, and a lively bar scene. During the day stroll through the quaint streets, hit the beach, or go out on a boat for the afternoon.

8. SCOTTSDALE
Scottsdale's warm weather, scenic landscapes, and gorgeous spas provide an ideal setting for a relaxing girls' getaway. At night, check out the lively bars and restaurants in the Old Town.

9. ATLANTIC CITY
Atlantic City is a favorite with many East Coast brides because they can relax on the beach during the day, then try their luck at gambling before dinner and dancing at one of the casino clubs.

10. CHICAGO
This cosmopolitan city has a fantastic restaurant and bar scene and tons of fun group activities to try. Bachelorette parties can choose from cooking and art classes, comedy and cabaret shows, burlesque classes, and more.

Do you want a bachelorette weekend? Or just one night? Which of these cities would you pick?

Brides who want a multi-day party, remember: The bachelorette getaway is a luxury, not a mandatory event, so you need to graciously give cash-strapped bridesmaids or those with kids—or, heck, those who just don't want to use their vacation days—a break.

A friend and I were dining on some delicious sushi last night when she mentioned her coworker recently sent out the cutest video save-the-date of all time. Now, we've seen a million and a half creative wedding ideas here on the blog, but, for the sake of research (and my never-ending love of funny videos), I still asked her to send it over. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: Engaged? Maybe!

Looks like Johnny Depp might've put a ring on it! There's definitely A ring on it, in any event—IT being the fourth finger Amber Heard's left hand.

So are Johnny Depp and Amber Heard engaged? According to E! News, Amber and a friend dined at L.A.'s Ago restaurant Monday night, and Amber went out of her way to keep her left hand under wraps. Still, an eagle-eyed photographer managed to snap a pic of a ring that looks pretty engagement-y, IMO.

Read the full story—and see the ring pic!—here.

Is that an engagement ring?! Do you think Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are engaged?

She wasn't wearing a ring at the Golden Globes. (Yes, I checked.) Maybe she asked Johnny to hide it under his wackadoo Indiana Jones hat though.

An Amazing Wedding Invitation Idea for the Unconventional Bride, Courtesy of Etsy!

When Goldie and I started planning our wedding, we knew it was going to be casual and intimate, in a rustic, outdoor setting, with a ton of DIY. And knowing that invitations are the first thing people see, we wanted ours to set the tone for the evening. We scoured the market before stumbling upon an artist on Etsy named Pinar, of CuriousMe Designs, based in the U.K.. We were instantly smitten.

Pinar offers ready-made wedding stationery or custom designs, all at extremely affordable prices. The process for custom invites is easy and fun: You fill out a creative brief, she works up an idea, presents it via email, and then you can do two Skype sessions to make modifications before she prints and ships. And, for an extra charge, you can choose from one of Pinar's signature handwritten fonts, and she will address your envelopes. Check out our wedding invite here and get to know Pinar too!

curious-me-designs-wedding-invite

Envelopes with Pinar's calligraphy and the front side of my invitation.

Her aesthetic: "I love the rawness of hand drawing and illustrating. I live between mountains and the sea of North Cyprus and the rooftops and chimney pots of London, which has influenced me. My invitations typically have tree-filled forests and mountains with a modern touch of typography and pops of color."

curious-me-designs-wedding-invite-folded

We designed a folded map of our venue as the invitation.

How she designs: "It’s like telling the story of each couples’ adventure. The best part is talking to and meeting couples from all over the world. I get invited to create such special pieces as part of one of the most memorable and happiest days in their lives."

curious-me-designs-wedding-invite-folded-tight

Pinar illustrated tents on the invite, a nod to our invitation to have people camp out after the party.

On how her Etsy store came to be: "My fiancé (now husband) started my Etsy store to sell some illustration prints I’d created previously. A few months later we got married and had a full-on DIY wedding. I designed our stationery, and we made everything that could be made. The great surprise was the amount of amazing compliments we got! And so from this I designed my first ready-made wedding stationery collection for CuriousMe and launched October 2012."

curious-me-designs-wedding-invite-suite

Our full suite, including an RSVP postcard and thank-you note.

What is CuriousMe?: "I was using it as my creative name whilst working as a freelancer. It came from my curiosity of things, objects, art, music, technology, and making."

curious-me-designs-wedding-thank-you

Custom thank-you notes.

Pinar's advice to engaged couples: "Don’t give in to the pressures of others or traditions—think about what you want and go for it! Even if it’s unique and different, this day is going to be one of the best days of your lives and one that is a start to your forever adventure together. So choose stationery that you’ll want to keep as a memento for a long time."

You're Engaged! Now What? Review These 6 DOs and DON'Ts to Avoid Major Wedding Mistakes

$
0
0

wedding-planning-what-to-do-after-you-get-engaged

"I love you, now move. You're getting in the way of my engagement selfie."

1. DO: Call your parents.
You're probably tempted to post a harmless little "I said YES!" ring shot, but your families will be bummed if they hear about your engagement via Facebook—or worse, from a neighbor who spotted the announcement first. Tell your family and close friends before you tell your Twitter and Instagram followers.

2. DON'T: Ask everyone you know to be in your wedding party.
"Will you be a bridesmaid?" will be on the tip of your tongue when you tell your besties, but hold off on asking till you've talked to your groom about your wedding party. Maybe he only wants his brother to stand beside him—which is going to look awkward if your sister, three childhood BFFs, and all 12 girls from your sorority pledge class are on your side.

3. DO: Insure your ring.
I know, so unsexy. But imagine if your brand-new engagement ring got—yikes!—lost or stolen. Spendy pieces of jewelry generally aren't protected under your standard homeowner's or renter's* insurance, so either add a rider (extra insurance) or take out a ring-specific policy from a company like Perfect Circle, which specialize in jewelry insurance.
* If you rent and don't have renter's insurance, get it TODAY. Trust me.

4. DON'T: Rush out and buy your wedding dress.
You've had a dream dress on your secret Pinterest board for years, but don't rush out and buy it—even if there's a sample sale. Shopping for wedding dresses is special, and you only get to do it once, so take your time and try on a bunch of dresses—that dream gown isn't going anywhere. Plus, you want your dress to fit with the season, your wedding venue, and the overall vibe of your wedding. A floaty boho slip dress (perfect for a springtime garden wedding) will look out of place if you wind up having a black-tie wedding in a hotel ballroom in the dead of winter.

5. DO: Get a manicure.
It'll make the big engagement ring reveal a little less special if you have to say over and over again, "But don't look at my cuticles! They're offensive!" So treat yourself to a mani—but leave your engagement ring at home if you haven't insured it!

6. DON'T: Don't break out the wedding-planning binder right away.
OMG! You're getting MARRIED! There's so much to DO! But don't jump into doing any of it just yet. You'll have plenty of time to write checklists and contact vendors—but you can't get back the first few dreamy, floating-in-the-clouds days after you've just gotten engaged. Make a point to enjoy your newly engaged bliss. When people press you about wedding plans (which they will, the SECOND there's a ring on your finger), say, "We're taking a few weeks to enjoy being engaged. We'll start wedding planning in the spring." (Or whatever the next season is.)

Are any of you newly engaged? Already married or ladies who've been engaged a while: Is there anything you wish you did differently, post-engagement?

I've always had a soft spot for Lacey Chabert. Mostly because when she was 12 and I was in high school, people would say, "You look JUST like that girl on Party of Five. No, not the hot one. No, not the other hot one. The little kid." And then her role in Mean Girls—one my fave movies, ever—pretty much cemented our imaginary bond. So as you can imagine, I was psyched to see pics from Gretchen Wieners' wedding. I posted one photo along with her wedding news. Here's a second snap of that dress, which has a mermaid silhouette:

And here she is pre-ceremony in either an A-line or ball gown:

I commented on her blog—where she shared even more wedding pics—to ask who designed her gowns, but she's probably too busy filing a restraining order to get back to me. I can't help it that you're so popular, Lacey.

3 Awards-Season Makeup Tricks You Can Steal for Your Wedding

$

With Sunday's Golden Globes, awards season 2014 officially began. Cue the eye-candy parade of celebrities looking extra shiny and perfect—and get ready to steal some of their makeup-application secrets, which work just as well for walking an aisle as a red carpet.

zooey-deschanel-golden-globes-2014-flower-hair-red-lipstick

Here are a few awards-show makeup tricks that'll help you look spotlight-worthy—but not overdone—on your wedding day.

* Layer on extra moisturizer, to help you get that added luminosity you're looking for (and for smooth makeup application). At the Globes, makeup artist Nick Barose applied Chanel Sublimage La Creme Ultimate Skin Regeneration Texture Fine moisturizer and eye cream on Lupita Nyong'o and let the products thoroughly sink in while she got her nails done. He then blotted it before applying her foundation.

* Go easy on the foundation. You'd think celebrities are wearing inches of the stuff to make their skin look flawless, but in reality, their makeup artists try to paint on as sheer a veil of foundation as possible, to keep the skin looking natural, not cakey. Brides often think they need to wear extra foundation on the day when all eyes are upon them—or even airbrush it on—but it's easy to go too far. Try just taking more time applying and blending spot concealer to problem zones and leave your overall foundation application lighter.

* Don't do matching lip liner. That old rule about using a lip liner that matches your lipstick is no longer one that everyone abides by—so don't automatically do it for your wedding (one time when you're apt to bother with liner). "There's nothing more aging and less cool than a very hard lip line," says makeup artist Kate Lee, who worked with Emma Watson for the Golden Globes. "It's unflattering and doesn't look realistic." To avoid this, she usually skips liner entirely and defines/controls bold lips by tracing around the edge with concealer on a lip brush. If she does use liner to build the lip shape outward a bit, it's one that matches the actress's lip color, NOT the lipstick.

What are a couple of makeup tricks you're excited to use for your wedding? Any techniques you're wondering about? Ask here and I'll pass along your Qs to the pros and answer them here on Save the Date in the future!

The 5 Wedding Details Men Care About Most

brides-logo

While it varies from couple to couple, it might sometimes seem as if your fiance is less-than-interested in the details of wedding planning. And you may take his general lack of opinion and occasional eye-roll as "you handle it, I'll just stay here and watch football." But, as disinterested as he might seem, over time, we've come to realize that there are usually five areas of the wedding planning process that guys secretly are into, and even better, really care about:

1-rental-suits-for-groom-groomsmen-wedding-0702

1. The honeymoon
While he may have insisted that you choose the locale, it's likely that he's just invested in the destination and journey. In fact, most guys actually dream of surprising their bride-to-be with some romantic aspects of the honeymoon (if not the entire thing!). If you're not into surprises, that's OK—just make sure you let him be as involved in the planning as he'd like to be (and chances are good that he probably would really like to be involved!). P.S. 2. The cake
Most brides assume that their fiance has zero interest in the wedding cake. And while he may be less in tune with buttercream vs. fondant (unless he's a chef), most men love the chance to taste test wedding cakes at appointments with bakers, so bring him along. You both will be surprised at how much fun you have and how helpful his opinion is (and what a bonding experience it can be, too).

3. The music
If there will be dancing at your reception, it's likely that your husband-to-be will want to help set the tone of what's played and when. In other words, this is the time where he may want to be sure your love of eighties love songs isn't completely exploited by the DJ and some more up-beat tunes are played. If you're in sync musically, great. But if you have differing styles, be sure to let him suggest a playlist of songs that he loves, and you can do the same.

4. The getaway car
Most guys have an opinion about this and may even want to handle the vehicle situation entirely. You might be surprised at how much he's thought about the type of vehicle that will take you from church to reception, or whisk you away to your hotel later that night. He might be a limo guy, or maybe he wants to surprise you with an antique Rolls Royce. Let him!

5. The first kiss
While this isn't exactly an aspect of the wedding you can plan, you'd be shocked at how many men think about the first kiss after being declared man and wife. He wants it to be romantic, passionate, but not too intense, and he definitely doesn't want to botch it. Just know that he's thinking about this part of the ceremony, perhaps more than any other part. Ease his mind by asking him how he envisions the first kiss going, and then practice, practice, practice!
