We're all familiar with Kate Middleton's sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring, but there's another fit-for-a-princess engagement ring I want to throw back to today: the 10.47 emerald-cut diamond Prince Rainier III of Monaco presented to Grace Kelly in 1956.
Let's go in for a closer look:
The Cartier diamond is set in platinum with bezel-set baguette side stones. Swoon.
Often a diamond that big seems like overkill, but it works on Grace Kelly, I think. First of all, at 5'7", she was on the tall side, so she presumably didn't have itty-bitty hands. And the rest of the ring is pretty low-key (there isn't a diamond halo or equally huge side stones), so the super-size center stone doesn't feel gaudy. Also, she was a princess, so if anyone can pull off a ring that big, it's someone who also wears tiaras on occasion.
Thoughts on Grace Kelly's engagement ring from Prince Rainier?
Love, love, love.
