Gifts are nice, but all you NEED is... Card from Sugar Paper, $6.

Starting your wedding registry is incredibly overwhelming. Whether you're registering at two stores or 10*, it can be hard to pull the trigger just go for it, because what if you pick, say, sheets at one store but find a better set at the next one? Or what if every store where you're registering has the same blender and mixer and toaster? How do you strike a balance, so there's stuff available on every registry?

Here's how I managed: We started all three of our registries under fake names. (Just our first and middle names instead of our first and last.) We registered in person at two stores and online at the third, then I took a few days to take stock of all three registries, shuffle things around, and tinker with a few listings before updating the registries with our real names.

Pretty much the second you're engaged people are going to start asking where you're registered—engagement gifts are HUGE in NYC—so this cheat lets you start the registry process without making 'em public till you're ready.

Have you started your wedding registry yet? Do you find it all a little daunting? Where are you registering?

We did Williams-Sonoma, Crate & Barrel, and Bloomingdale's.

* Registering at 10 stores is probably a bit much, just because your guests should be able to buy you a gift at one store/site without running all over town or paying for shipping multiple times.
