There isn’t always a sense a newness when you see wedding dresses heading down the runway. Even when the dresses feel pretty and stylish, there are only so many ways to do white, lace, and tulle. So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw three totally fresh-to-bridal trends this season. Check ’em out.
TREND 1: CAPES
Taking a cue from the red carpet, designers brought floor-length capes to bridal in a major way. Some were classic coat-like capes, but I was most excited about the iterations that draped more like superhero-style capes, which are a great way to add drama and back interest for a bride who doesn’t want to wear a veil.
Wedding Dress 1: Theia
Wedding Dress 2: Jean-Ralph Thurin
Wedding Dress 3: Jenny Packham
Wedding Dress 4: Badgley Mischka
TREND 2: WATERCOLOR FABRICS
I’ve seen two watercolor wedding dresses in previous seasons, but watercolor was HUGE to a whole ’nother level this season. There were delicate flowers, as well as dramatic abstract washes of color.
Wedding Dress 5: Romona Keveza Collection
Wedding Dress 6: Carolina Herrera
Wedding Dress 7: Lazaro
Wedding Dress 8: Theia
I don’t have the official pictures yet from Naeem Khan, but check out the white-on-blue hand-painting on this gown. And don’t forget the painterly flowers on the Truly Zac Posen dress I “modeled.”
TREND 3: 3-D FLORAL DETAILS
Obviously we’ve seen flowers on wedding dresses in the past, but the floral details seemed to jump off the the fabric this season, giving the gowns loads of dimension.
Wedding Dress 9: Mira Zwillinger
Wedding Dress 10: Marchesa
Wedding Dress 11: Jim Hjelm
Wedding Dress 12: Vera Wang
I know you guys weren’t really getting the unlined wedding dresses Vera showed this season. Click here to see a lined version of this dress, which is how it will be sold to brides, obviously.
