Every bride-to-be knows the agony of the budget and one of the biggest ticket items: flowers. And oh-my-gosh but they can be expensive! In order to keep the check down for my October wedding, I did some research on which flowers would be in season, as well as what kind of extras best complement fall florals.

"I like rich jewel tones that mirror what's happening outdoors and textural elements such as coneflower heads, scabiosa seed pods, and various grasses," Eatherley Schultz of Floressence in North Carolina told me. "I like to show the seasonal stages of flowers, too, so I'll include buds, full flowers, and pods to highlight all growth stages. There's so much beauty in each part."

For fall brides on a tight budget, she suggests upping the amount of textural greens in bouquets and centerpieces instead of all flowers. "Use varying shades of color like greens, sages, and blues. With different textures and shapes, the flowers you do have will really shine."

Names to jot down in your wedding notebook to check out?

Flowers: Dahlias, zinnia, marigolds, and spider mums.

Berries: Pepperberries, privet berries, and mountain ash.

Fruiting vines: Figs, persimmons, and crabapples.

Grasses: Millet, explosion grass, or bunny tail grass.

Fall brides, what are you doing for your flowers?
