1 in 5 Men Do This VERY Surprising Thing Before Their Weddings

$

How would you feel if your husband-to-be decided to pick out your dress?

groom-dress

Because—according to a new survey by Mintel—19 percent of grooms are either entirely or mostly responsible for choosing their wife-to-be's wedding dress.

Says Fiona O’Donnell, lifestyle and leisure analyst at Mintel: “Women are still the primary wedding planners, but the bottom line is that the groom is a key consumer for industry players to consider when developing marketing strategies—particularly in regard to groom and wedding party attire, food or catering, music, ceremony site, and reception venue."

It's not entirely clear how grooms are responsible for their brides' dresses—do they actually see all of the possibilities? Or is it more of a "wow, babe, I sure do like strapless dresses with A-line skirts"—but it definitely presents an interesting question...

Would you be OK with your husband-to-be choosing your gown—or even picking out the style?

"I Want to Wear Heels on My Wedding Day, but I'm Not Sure If I Can Walk in Them." (I Say: Practice Makes Perfect!)

reader-dilemma

Writes Save the Date reader Ariana:

When I was younger I mostly wore sneakers and flip-flops, but now that I'm becoming a professional—and getting married!—I want to introduce some heels into my shoe wardrobe. I need help selecting a wedding shoe that's an appropriate height, and I need to know the proper technique for walking in heels! This may sound silly, but whenever I've tried to wear them, I feel clumsy and wind up stumbling—not the graceful look I'm going for my wedding day. I'm getting married on August 24, 2014, and have started dress shopping, but I think I'm MOST excited about is buying a fabulous pair of shoes for my wedding day. (And if I'm able to wear heels for fun and in the workplace, that would be great too!) Please help!

Here are my thoughts:

Obviously wearing heels on your wedding day isn't a requirement, and women can kick ass professionally in flats—or even sneakers. (See: Senator Wendy Davis' pink trainers!) But if you want to wear heels on your wedding day, I say go for it! Since I stand at a shrimpy 5'2", if I'm doing anything other than preschool drop-off or swinging through the grocery store, I'm wearing heels. I feel more assertive with the extra inches, and the boost they give me bumps me out of the other-people's-armpits region when I'm standing on subway rides. (SO GROSS!) Plus, I feel like heels make your clothes hang a little a better: They boost your butt and force your hips forward so you stand a little taller, and look more confident by default.

But all that confidence falls apart if you can't actually walk in your heels, so get practicing! (Side note: If your wedding was this August, I'd probably suggest skipping the heels, but you have more than a year to perfect your stride!)

I'd start by buying a pair of "sensible" heels that can work for days at the office and date nights. Look for something that's made of a supple leather (crappy plastic shoes will make you swear off heels in about 12 seconds) with a little bit of wiggle room for your toes. (When in doubt, go up a half-size, since your feet tend to swell as the day goes on.)

how-to-walk-in-heels-for-your-wedding-0709

Nine West Camya from Zappos, $89.

This pair has a 3.75-inch heel, but the 1-inch platform means your feet won't be at a crazy-high angle. The platform also helps take the pressure off the front of your feet, which can lead to that terrible pinched-toes feeling. Another thing to look for: a heel that's not too spindly, which will throw off your balance more dramatically.

Once your pretty new shoes arrive, I'd pad the backs with Foot Petals Heavenly Heelz and the fronts with the brand's Tip Toes. I also like to rough up the bottoms with Sole Stopperz to prevent slips. (There are similar products at drug stores, that's just the brand I prefer, and a cheaper alternative to sole stickers is dragging sandpaper across the bottom of your shoes.) Then throw on a pair of socks to prevent blisters (for at-home practice only!) and start doing laps around your living room. Focus on standing tall with your shoulders back and your hips forward, and walk about half as quickly as you usually do. Keep your shoes on as you go about your business until walking in them on flat ground feels like second nature, then head for a set of stairs. When you're comfortable on those—this could take a few days—you're ready to brave the streets. Just don't commit to a walking tour, or even a full 9-to-5 at the office. Stow flats in your bag and sprinkle cornstarch on your toes to minimize friction before you head out.

In my experience, the more you wear heels, the more you'll be able to wear them, if that makes sense. Some people call this "breaking in your shoes"; I call it "breaking in your feet." (Yes, I know that sounds like medieval torture!) Also be kind to your calves at the end of the day; you use your muscles differently when you wear heels, so give them a quick stretch a little rubdown. And if you're feeling sore or wobbly the next morning, switch to flats for the day.

If you can master wearing heels on a regular day, you should have no problem wearing them down the aisle. Just order them well in advance, pad them well, and practice, practice, practice.

Ladies, what do you think? Did you wear heels on your wedding day? Should Ariana take some new heels for a spin? Or should she stick with flats?

After hours of "breaking in my feet," I made it straight through to the end of my wedding in 4-inch heels!

I just read in an oldish print issue of Us Weekly that Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez would wait till after their baby's arrival to wed, but E! News is now reporting that they'll marry this weekend! Of course pregnant Halle—who's due sometime this fall—is sporting a pretty substantial bump at this point (the pic above is from a month ago), so she'd need a dress with some wiggle room in the midsection. With that in mind, here are six bump-flattering wedding dresses I like for Halle Berry:

The Dos and Don'ts of Wedding Hair Extensions (Plus Some Crucial Styling Tips!)

bridal-hair-extensions

Whether you're looking to add some oomph to an updo or lend more length to your half-up hairstyle, there's a good chance you're considering possibly incorporating some hair extensions into your wedding look. Even if you've never used them before, don't be scared—your hairstylist can make them look perfectly natural. And to keep you from making common faux-hair mistakes, I got the following tips for bridal hair extensions from Nikki Lee and Riawna Capri, co-owners of Nine Zero One Salon in L.A., which has a brand-new hair-extensions bar (featuring the popular brand Hair U Wear, which I've worn many times and loved!).

Bridal hair extensions DOs:
* DO find multicolor extensions, not hair that's one solid shade. Find an extension brand that offers multilevel coloration—this means that each shade features seven to 11 different colors, which are hand-blended to look totally natural, just like your own hair. You can even play with color and add extensions that are one to two shades lighter or darker, to create high- or low-lights. Try Hairdo by HairUWear Clip-In Extensions. * DO curl your real hair and the extensions together. This ensures that your natural hair and the extensions are completely blended in for a seamless look and that your hair looks like it's all your own (only better). Stying tip: Set your curling iron at a cool 350 degrees, and alternate curling 1-inch sections from the front to the back, for a more natural look.

* DO make sure you wash and condition your set of extensions before your wedding day. This can be done to both human hair and synthetic extensions. Let them air dry. You want them clean on your big day, and washing will remove any product buildup created over time.

Bridal hair extensions DON'Ts:
* DON'T use too much hair! Using too many extensions can look unnatural and will also be uncomfortable. You want to make sure you still look like yourself on your wedding day. Try clipping in just one set that will add both volume and the desired length. You might see that it's all you need.

* DON'T clip in extensions too close to your hairline. If you do, they will be very uncomfortable and can also slip out too easily. Instead, be sure to clip them 1/2 inch away from your scalp and 2 inches away from your hairline. Styling tip: First tease the area and spray with a hairspray to create some grip for the extensions. This allows the clips to hold on to your hair better and will prevent slippage.

* DON'T blunt-cut extensions. If extensions are cut straight across, they will not have any body or shape and you will look like you're wearing extensions. To ensure that they look their most natural, ask your hairstylist to attach them to your hair and then cut them to custom fit your look. No one will ever ask if you are wearing extensions on your big day, but everyone will give you compliments on your hair!

How many of you plan to wear extensions on your wedding day, or did so already? Do you have any of your own tips and tricks for making them look natural and beautiful? Share below!

"My Boyfriend Just Proposed, Which Is Great, but Now We Fight ALL the Time." (I Say: Totally Normal!)

reader-dilemma

Writes Save the Date reader Keri:

I got engaged two months ago, and while I'm so, so happy and excited, I feel like my fiance and I are constantly bickering all of a sudden. I'm sure it's because we just moved in together and got engaged, AND, on top of this, he just go an epic promotion to a different state, so we're both moving; he's doing two jobs until they find a replacement, AND I have to find a new job.

But here's what's getting to me: Everyone keeps saying, "THIS is the happiest time of your life!" And I'm nervous because we seem to be having serious discussions and petty disagreements more than usual. Should I chalk it up to stress and try to ignore the pressure-packed statements about how HAPPY I'm supposed to be? Or is this something to bring up with my fiance—even though I'm sure it will add to his stress, which I’d really prefer not to do? I'm know I love my fiance more than anything and that he feels the same way. We're both looking forward to marriage and I know that we're OK—but we're just fighting SO much right now! Should I be worried?

Here are my thoughts:

Ugh. In my experience, the only people who tell you that the post-engagement phase will be "the HAPPIEST time of your life!" are people who are so far removed from their own wedding that they forget how stressful planning a wedding is.* And on top of the stress of planning a wedding, you're dealing with a move, moving in together, and another upcoming move across state lines. And there are the tiny matters of his crazy-sounding new job and the fact that you, um, won't have a job when you move.

So, yes, you should be stressed. I'd be seriously concerned if you weren't!

Even for couples who don't have all that other stuff going on, the post-engagement phase can be stressful after the initial "We're getting married!" glow wears off. I chalk this up to a few things:

You're both freaking out abut the future a little. You've found the ONE person you're going to spend your life with. Yay! But wait, ONE person? For the rest of your life? To put it in perspective, if you're 25, you could reasonably spend DOUBLE your current number of years together. Even if you're A-OK with all that, it's a little bit daunting!

You've both relaxed a little. I easily butt heads with Rory more than I did with previous guys—in part because I know he's not going anywhere. Once you get engaged there's a new sense of permanence to your relationship, so you might feel more comfortable saying, "It REALLY drives me bananas when you leave your dirty socks on the coffee table." And he might ask, out of nowhere, that your stop eating EVERY meal with The Real Housewives of Everywhere rattling on in the background. Of course this stuff is petty and doesn't change the foundation of your relationship, but it might be nice to figure out a way to keep the silly annoyances to a minimum before they become big THINGS. (He could put a small laundry basket next to the couch to toss his socks in, and you could agree to three TV-off dinners a week.)

Wedding planning is f'ing STRESSFUL. Maybe you're going for a secret elopement or saying "I do" a deux at city hall. If that's the case then maybe you're not stressed. But if you're planning a decent-size traditional wedding, you're probably overwhelmed by all the venues and color palettes and dress options and I'm sure your mother-in-law has already mentioned that she HAS to invite her entire office. It's enough to put anyone on edge! And all the edginess can EASILY translate to petty bickering at home.

Like I said, totally normal! But that doesn't mean it's fun. So here's my solution: I don't think you need to sit down and have a whole big "talk" just yet, because I agree, then it becomes a THING, and the "thing" will probably just stress you both out more. Instead of making drastic changes and grand gestures, I suggest you start by making an extra effort to be nice.

Wait THAT'S my big solution?!

Yep, just go out of your way to be nice. Because in my experience, where bickering begets bickering and cranky begets cranky, nice begets nice. So if you go out of your way to be nice to your fiance, you might find that he's suddenly nicer to you.

If he's edgier than usual, cook (or order) him dinner. Pick up his dry cleaning. Walk the dog, even if that's usually his job. I'm not saying you need to become a doormat; I'm just saying try putting forth a little extra effort, just to see if that swings his mood in your favor. I think you might find that he starts being extra nice in return.

But if he keeps nitpicking and stressing, then it's time to say, "Hey, I don't really like being spoken to like that." Or, "I don't like the way we've been treating each other lately." You don't have to have a whole State of Our Union discussion, but just point out that he's kind of being dick-ish—because he might be so distracted that he's lost sight of how he's treating you.

I also think you should try to set aside one wedding-free "us" day (or "us" afternoon, if you're short on time!) a weekend so you can forget the pressure of wedding planning—and everything else—and just enjoy, say, a round of mini golf or a trip to your favorite tacos-and-margaritas shack.

Ladies, what do you think? Is it normal to start bickering post-engagement? Or was wedding planning all rainbows and butterflies for you? What would you do in Keri's shoes?

*The same people who tell you "THIS is the happiest time of your life!" post-engagement will tell you, when you have a newborn, "Enjoy EVERY second! It goes so fast." Like keeping a screaming infant who's puking all over you and won't sleep ALIVE isn't enough of a challenge. You better be ENJOYING EVERY SECOND on top of that! Double ugh.

My maid of honor lives far away, but the rest of my bridesmaids are nearby. Should I ask one them to take her place?

Don't ditch your number-one gal just because she's too far away to plan a proper party. Ask your other bridesmaids to take up the slack—helping with the wedding has always been part of their duties too. Just be sure they keep your best friend updated on shower or bachelorette party ideas and other planning details.

1 MUST-Have Item You're Going to Need on Your Wedding Day. SRSLY, Pack a Couple in Your Purse Now

Jonnie Bag by Kooba, cat not included. I'll take one in denim, please!

No, not a kitten—although it might be nice to have something to softly stroke while your future mother-in-law is prattling on during your hair appointment. One thing I can guarantee you'll reach for multiple times on your wedding day is a pair of scissors. And unless your "getting ready room" is in someone's home, it might not be easy to find 'em!

Think about it: There's a good chance your wedding accessories, shoes, and undergarments are all brand spankin' new, and likely all have pesky little tags that you probably shouldn't be tearing off with your teeth. And you'll want to snip those annoying under-the-armpit hanger straps from your moms' and 'maids' dresses to avoid a weird poking-out situation in your photos.

Just take my word for it, as a bride who had to break into an office and rifle through someone's desk drawer! Put a pair of scissors in your day-of wedding bag now, and then you can go ahead and thank me later.

What other must-haves should a bride have in her day-of wedding bag?

I ALWAYS tell brides to pack LBD-friendly deodorant—even if you don't need it, your 'maids will!

I think it's safe to say Molly McNearney, the new Mrs. Jimmy Kimmel, has a sense of humor! It sounds like the bride set up this kick-ass wedding prank: When guests at Saturday's wedding stood to see Molly walk down the aisle toward her groom, they were greeted by Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe—in a wedding dress! The real bride didn't walk down the aisle until the buzz died down.

SO amazing!

What would your groom do if someone OTHER than you was standing at the top of the aisle?

Rory would have DIED! Well played, Molly and Gabourey!
