Emma Roberts Looks Insanely Glamorous as a Maid of Honor in Her Friend's Wedding

0

Emma Roberts slipped into the role of maid of honor for her designer pal Kara Smith's wedding and put on a stunning ivory slip dress for the occasion.

The star attended the November 14 nuptials wearing a beautiful silk ivory frock with lace detailing at the neckline, a dress that offered a sweet, vintage effect to the event, which was held at Smith's family home and vineyard in Santa Ynez, California. Smith runs the clothing label Elkin with Roberts' co-maid of honor Brit Elkin (Roberts has also modeled in seasonal lookbooks for the designer duo). All the bridesmaid's dresses were Elkin, of course; and the bride—who wore Houghton's ethereal "Evie" gown to walk down the aisle—changed into a dress of her own design for the reception.

The star paired her white dress with a sleek blonde bob, smoky eye and petal pink lips, and looked as beautiful as ever. See more pics from the quintessential California wedding below:

Help: I'm Engaged, but I'm Still in Love With My Ex

Writes Tammy:

I met a man, we’ll call him Curt, on July 13, 2003. I was engaged, but I broke it off to be with Curt. We eventually broke up, but got back together in 2007 and dated on and off for a few years, but I called it off when he wouldn’t marry me. We got back in touch in 2011, and our renewed relationship was intense but burned out again. Four years later, on on July 13, 2015—the anniversary of the day we met—he reached out once again.

Despite the fact that he has a child (which broke my heart, because I always thought I’d be the mother of his children) and despite the fact that I’m engaged to a man who’s made sacrifices and given me everything, I can’t get Curt out of my head.

Curt and I met up a month ago. I didn’t wear my engagement ring or tell him anything about my private life. We’re planning to meet up again, and I want to tell him everything. I love him more now that I ever did, and I’d be willing to leave my fiance and never look back. I know our connection is still there, but I’m scared that it’s too late to rekindle our magical love. Please help me.

Here are our thoughts:

This relationship sounds positively toxic. Yes, there’s something that can feel “magical” when you reignite and old flame, but the two of you have you have proven—over more than a decade—that, for whatever reason, this isn’t a partnership that’s sustainable for the long run. Of course there can be ups and downs in any relationship, but yours seems to involve more land mines than bumps in the road.

As Maya Angelou famously told Oprah, “When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.” This guy has been showing you who he is—a guy who will not commit to you—since 2003. If you want to spend a few more more decades making up and breaking up, then give Curt a fifth {Sixth? Seventh? We’ve lost count. } chance. If you want to get married (and it seems like you do, since you’ve said yes to two proposals already) then you need to cut ties with Curt for good, because he’s not going to want to marry you in 2016 any more than he did in 2003. Or 2007. Or 2011.

Unless you want your heart broken again (and again and again), end it with Curt for good. Send him one last email saying in no uncertain terms that you will not see him anymore. Forward his emails to your junk folder and block his phone number. We don’t know if your current fiance is the right guy for you—you probably shouldn’t be so willing to bail on someone at this juncture in your relationship—but we can tell you for sure that Curt definitely isn’t.

These Are the 5 Engagement Rings Everyone's Going to Covet in 2016

Think you’ve found your Dream Engagement Ring? You might want to make like Steve Harvey and take back that title: The five engagement rings below—all on-trend for 2016, according to our friends at Brilliant Earth—are all worthy of your No. 1 spot.

1-best-new-engagement-rings-1229-courtesy-brilliant-earth

Scalloped Pave Accents. Many couples are gravitating toward scalloped or French pave accent diamonds along the band. This classic look minimizes visible precious metal, creating an effect of pure shimmer, especially when paired with many of the distinctive halo settings that continue to grace the hands of brides today. Astoria Diamond Ring, $1,400 (setting only).

2-best-new-engagement-rings-1229-courtesy-brilliant-earth

Rose Gold. The warmth and romance of rose gold make it a very popular precious metal for engagement rings. The color shines in vintage-inspired designs, and looks equally stunning in a modern style. Men are also getting in on the action and choosing a rose-gold wedding band that coordinates with their bride’s. Cordoba Diamond Ring, $2,350 (setting only).

3-best-new-engagement-rings-1229-courtesy-brilliant-earth

Nature Inspired. Rings that evoke elements of nature through gently curving lines, delicate leaves, and flower motifs remain sought after, particularly by couples who love the outdoors. Ranging from whimsical and abstract to more true-to-life interpretations, diamond engagement rings like The Willow Diamond Ring provide a graceful twist on a classic setting. Jasmine Diamond Ring, $1,050 (setting only).

4-best-new-engagement-rings-1229-courtesy-brilliant-earth

Colored Gemstones. Kate Middleton put this trend back on the map, and it shows no sign of slowing down. A growing percentage of couples are opting for bold colored gemstones from deep blue to less common shades of yellow, pink, peach, teal and green sapphires, as well as emeralds, aquamarines, and other vibrant gems. In addition to providing a unique look, colored gemstones can also offer a more affordable option to white or colored diamonds. The Larue Vintage Ring, $17,170.

5-best-new-engagement-rings-1229-courtesy-brilliant-earth

Rose Cut Diamonds. A popular style during the Georgian and Victorian eras, rose cut diamonds have a subtle shimmer and quiet beauty that’s both vintage and contemporary in feel. The rose cut has facets that rise to a single apex, resembling a rosebud. Featured in Brilliant Earth’s new Avant Bridal collection, rose cut diamonds are a fantastic option for brides seeking distinctive or non-traditional styles. Dusk Diamond Ring, $3,650.

Victoria Beckham Is Reportedly Making Eva Longoria's Wedding Dress (and Wants to Get Into Bridal!)

0
0

As it happens, Victoria Beckham had an extra reason to cheer when she found out that bestie Eva Longoria had gotten engaged to Jose Antonio Baston in Dubai earlier this month: Reports say she'll be making the wedding dress!

"Posh is keen to expand the wedding dress side of the business, so it's a dream come true for her to land this gig," a source told Britain's Mirror. "She knew she was doing it before Jose even proposed." She reportedly will gift the creation to her pal and has to be hoping for some seriously good karmic R.O.I. With the press that's likely to surround Eva's big day, it could mean a helluva introduction to any bridal collection VB wants to introduce to the world (some of her white dresses are included in stores' bridal sections, but none are traditional wedding gowns).

victoria-beckham-eva-longoria-friends

While we've got awhile to wait before seeing snaps of the creation, another source hinted at a minimalistic silk gown that's "romantic, sexy and showcases Eva's famous curves."

The two are serious pals, having met in Los Angeles when the Beckhams moved for David's soccer career (and Eva is Harper's godmother!). A wedding dress wouldn't be the first time their friendship has paid off, fashion-wise, either. Eva frequently wears her BFF's label, including the below midnight-blue gown she picked for a formal fall gala in London.

When Victoria tied the knot with David, she definitely did not go simple. The bride wore a Vera Wang gown (plus a crown and a second bright purple dress that came with a matching suit for David). The couple's matchy-matchy stage has since come to a halt.

If you haven't already seen snaps of Eva's beautiful ruby engagement ring...what are you waiting for?

Is Cutting Out Sex Before the Wedding Really Worth It?

0
0

The longer you wait, the better it is...or is it? The theory goes that if you willingly stop having sex with your significant other for a short period of time (say a few weeks to a few months) before you tie the knot, the more you'll want to do it and the sexier it'll be come the wedding night. Makes sense since we all want what we can't have, particularly after having been denied it for a while. In case you're considering holding out for the big night, we asked a number of married women to reveal whether or not the wait was worth it.

waiting-for-sex-wedding-1231-stocksy

"We didn't have sex for two months until the wedding, and it was definitely worth it! I just decided it was easier not to have to worry about if we had done it or not, and with so much going on and all the stress of planning, I was tired anyway so it was a win-win for me. It made the wedding night extra special! We had lived together for three years previously so I wanted something to look forward to." — Katie

"We stopped a couple weeks before the big day not because we're religious or anything but just because we thought it would up the ante a little bit. And it was perfect! I had been taking birth control, which really killed my sex drive, and I wound up stopping that about a month prior to getting married too. It was nice to actually want to have sex on my wedding night, as opposed to being sort of indifferent about it."— Colby

"We stopped having sex for the last five months leading up to the wedding. My now husband went along with it at the time, but afterward he told me he thought it was the worst idea ever. Go figure! I think we both really enjoyed ourselves on the wedding night though. It was special for me and long overdue relief for him."— Jana

"My husband and I briefly considered the idea then quickly squashed it. However, I have a friend that went without sex for six months and when I asked her about the wedding night she told me it was over in a couple minutes. I also remember her and her hubby being super grumpy and not just from all the planning during that time!"— Nathalie

"We tried to do this before the wedding, and it definitely didn't work for long! The wedding night was still special since it was our first official time 'doing it' as husband and wife."— Meghan

"For reasons other than just making it special, we decided to hold off for a couple of months pre-wedding. It wasn't easy for me (or him), but married sex is amazing! You'll enjoy your wedding night either way in my opinion."— Tinisa

Eva Longoria Will Have a "Big, Fat Mexican Wedding"

Eva Longoria is getting ready to walk down the aisle: After longtime boyfriend Jose Antonio Baston proposed in Dubai last month (with an insanely gorgeous engagement ring), the Telenovela star reportedly already has a wedding dress designer—bestie Victoria Beckham—and plans for a "big, fat Mexican wedding."

Eva told Today this morning that nothing official is in the works just yet: "We haven’t even discussed it," she said. "I’m still applauding him for how beautiful and amazing [the proposal] was, then we’ll talk about the big, fat Mexican wedding.”

These 5 Things Will Suck When You're Wedding Planning. Here's How to Get Over Them

0
0

If you’ve stood by as a friend or coworker unraveled while planning her wedding, you’ve probably wondered how trying on pretty dresses or sampling cake can make a generally sane woman go off the rails. Nothing about wedding planning seems particularly challenging, from the outset, so why does the process drive so many women bonkers?

Well, it’s not all bonbons and boutonnieres: Here are five times that wedding planning can genuinely suck—and how to move past them.

wedding-planning-tips-0105-getty-1

Money Will Become a Thing, Even If You Both Have Good Jobs
Maybe your groom just booked an impromptu boys trip—despite the fact that you’re looking at a $150-a-head wedding venue. Or maybe you got an extra-dramatic eye roll when you came home with a bottle of expensive champagne—to celebrate The Bachelor premiere. Regardless of whether you share a bank account or plan to keep ’em separate, how you spend will come under scrutiny (from your partner, and anyone else who’s chipping in for your big day) while you’re wedding-planning.
Get Over It: Have a conversation about how you’ll spend money leading up to the big day. If you’re each on the hook for $X, have it auto-paid to a separate wedding account—and give each other leeway for the occasional splurge, as long as you’re not racking up credit card debt.

You’ll Suffer From Input Overload
Before you were planning a wedding, polling your peers was helpful: “Should I wait for him to call me?” “Does this dress work for job interview?” But now that everyone who spots your ring (Gary from accounting, a random bank teller) wants to weigh in on the merits of a “proper” soup course, you probably just want to stick your fingers in your ears and yell “LA LA LA,” toddler-style.
Get Over It: Don’t argue about the aunt who says you “must” get $2,000 invitations and host a bridal shower for 80. Just paste a smile on your face and repeat after us: “Thanks! We’ll totally take that into consideration.”

Your Mom (and His Mom) Might Get Weird
Even if your mom was never the the “Why aren’t you engaged yet?” type, she’s probably considered how your wedding might play out—especially if she didn’t have the wedding of her dreams. Same goes for your groom’s mom. If one of them saved a wedding dress that they’re dying for you to try on, humor her—then feel free to politely decline. For the rest of the wedding-related conversations (from, “You really SHOULD invite your second cousins” to “Tell the caterer not to cook with salt!!”) see below.
Get Over It: Again, muster up that smile and say: “Thanks! We’ll totally take that into consideration.”

Your Friends May Go AWOL
Whether your best friends with a free spirit who’s not that into monogamy or a married mom of two, you might be surprised when she doesn’t answer your pressing email (Subject: WHAT COLOR ROSES?!) or a less-pressing one (Subject: brunch some time?). Some of your gal pals might be lukewarm on weddings, in general, others might be over them entirely. (You try going to 16 weddings in one summer.) And friends that are hoping for a ring of their own could be avoiding you if they can’t rein in their jealousy. Or your friends could all be super-psyched for you and supportive beyond measure—every wedding (and every friendship) is different.
Get Over It: If you feel like your friends have been distant since your engagement, make an effort to ask how their lives are going—and try to make concrete plans. (Subject: I miss you! Drinks Tuesday night?) When you do get together, steer the conversation away from your wedding, unless she asks you about it. And if she does ask, don’t take her curiosity as your cue to monopolize the conversation with your woes about your future mother-in-law.

Your Groom Will Have Lots of Opinions—or None at All
There’s something about the minutiae of wedding planning that generally doesn’t agree with guys. You may find your normally decisive groom stares blankly while you weigh the merits of traditional roses vs. garden roses. Or he could have surprisingly passionate feelings about something that feels, to you, inconsequential. (My groom got very emotional over the patterned paper that was going beneath the centerpieces at our reception. Yes, really.)
Get Over It: Planning your wedding solo is going to breed major resentment. If your guy’s not into it, make room in your budget for a wedding planner and thank us later. If your guy feels strongly about some things (the band or, say, that patterned paper) let him own those details so they’re off your plate. For everything else, rather than trying to make him care about napkin colors or the order your wedding party walks down the aisle, just make the decision yourself. At the end of the (wedding) day, your goal is to be married—so try not to sweat the details that happen outside of your vows. And don’t make him sweat them, either.

New First Lady of Estonia Bundles Up in a Puffer Coat for Her Wedding

Ieva Kupce wasn’t going to let freezing cold temps ruin her wedding day. The Latvian civil servant braved the frigid Estonian winter weather in a puffer coat after she said “I do” to the nation’s president, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, over the weekend.

For the wedding ceremony she picked a floor-length ivory wedding dress with a modest scoop neckline and three-quarter sleeves. She left the church in a fur:

But when it was time to play games and dance in the streets—Estonian traditions—she opted not to freeze (the high is three degrees in nearby Parnu, Estonia, today) and topped the whole look with a puffer coat that probably looks a lot like the one you wore to work today.

Ryan Phillippe put a super-sparkly ring on it: The newly engagedSecrets and Lies star and fiancee Paulina Slagter were photographed earlier this week after ringing in the New Year in Miami. All eyes, of course, were on Paulina’s left hand—and her bling-y new engagement ring.

Yes, that picture’s blurry, but our friends Brides went straight to the source—Neil Lane, who designed the engagement ring—and got the scoop. The sparkler is Neil’s Classic Tulip Diamond Ring, featuring a round brilliant-cut diamond in a split-shank platinum setting that features almost 200 pave stones. Breathtaking.

The sparkling diamond or gemstone with which your partner popped the question is undoubtedly one of your most prized possessions. So imagine losing it—and the soul-crushing fear you'd feel until you found it. It's enough to send a girl into a wine-induced tizzy. But these eight women—and one guy—don't have to imagine it. They lived through losing their engagement rings and are here to tell the scary tales.

"I thought I had lost my diamond-and-sapphire ring while visiting my mother in the at her summer place. I had been to the beach and thought it might have dropped into the sand, so I went back to the beach and dug for hours, everywhere, to no avail. As it turned out, I had left my ring at home in jewelry cleaner. I felt terrible and didn't tell anyone—definitely not my husband." —Wesley

"I just hired a personal trainer to get me ready for the big day, so I'm finding myself at the gym all the time these days. I have to take my ring off when I lift weights, so I usually leave it on top of my sweatshirt on the floor. I can't tell you how many times I've walked off to my next exercise, only to realize 30 minutes later that my ring is gone. Thank goodness it has usually been on the floor near my previous machine, but a girl has to learn!" —Candace

"My wife lost her engagement ring while she was helping me put concrete sidewalks in front of our house. Once the concrete work was done, we noticed her ring was gone. We couldn't find it in her gloves or anywhere else for that matter, so we assumed it was buried in the sidewalk. It was lost for what seemed like forever until one day, while doing the laundry, she noticed a sparkle in the lint trap of the dryer—and when she looked closer, she saw it was her ring. Evidently, she had put it in the small pocket on her jeans, and it remained there until it came out in the dryer." —Jonathan

"I once lost and found my ring on a road trip from Pennsylvania to Minnesota. On the road, we casually stopped at a McDonald's for a break. About an hour later, we stopped to visit family on the way and I quickly realized my ring was missing. I felt sick. We immediately searched the car and when we couldn't find it, we decided it must somehow be back at that McDonald's. We called the McDonald's, and my husband and family hopped back in the car to the restaurant. Two hours later, they returned with my ring. Some kind soul had found it and turned it in." —Sharon

"I lost my ring and eventually found it along the one-mile route I run every day. But before I found it, I lost my mind searching for it. When I realized it had to be somewhere on that one-mile stretch, I ordered a $7 lookalike for overnight delivery on Amazon—and my husband was none the wiser. Then I did a lot of 'running' that week for the ring. By some stroke of magical luck, I found it near the end of my block. Now I have a backup ring in case I ever lose it again." —Danielle

"During a bathroom renovation, I put away all my husband's valuables, but forgot to put away my own engagement ring. I left it out on my dresser, and one of the contractor's helpers took it. At first, I was convinced I lost it, but later the contractor called to tell us he'd overheard the helper bragging about taking it! The contractor tried to get it back personally from the helper, and kept his ear to the ground when he was unsuccessful. A few months later, he heard that my ring had been pawned. We provided the pawn ticket number and ring description to the police so they were able to retrieve the ring and return it to us. I judged myself and had a pit in my stomach every day it was gone. It was a miracle I got it back and I am so grateful for that." —Sarah

"I was getting my hair colored when I felt my finger was bare and immediately started shaking. I had no clue where my engagement ring was or where I had lost it. I tried to stay calm—after all, I couldn't run outside with color in my hair!—and the first thing I did was tell my husband. My husband and our children started looking for it at home, until I could come and join them. It was nowhere inside, so we went out back—and my husband spotted it on the deck, caught between two slats of wood. We couldn't believe it did not fall through the deck. I later realized that when it starts to get cold outside, my fingers to shrink and my ring becomes a bit loose. Now when it gets colder outside, I ensure my ring is on and try to keep my hands as warm as possible." —Shari

"My family and I went to the pool, and my husband told me to take my engagement ring off so it wouldn't fall off in the water. Bad move. I put it in the stroller and forgot it was in there, so on the way home, we realized I didn't have it. We opened the trunk and it wasn't in the stroller. And because we're Orthodox Jews and it was close to sunset on Friday—hours from the Sabbath—I was running out of time to look for it. We went back to the pool and looked everywhere, but couldn't find it. When looked through the car and couldn't find it. We tore apart all the pool bags and still couldn't find it. Finally, when we decided to give up and drive home, my husband spotted it on the parking lot ground. It felt like a miracle that it was just lying there." —Jennifer

"I lost my engagement ring at the Minneapolis airport. I flew home for a visit and placed my ring in my carry-on bag because I was nervous about removing it at the security checkpoint. But when I retrieved my luggage at baggage claim, I inadvertently left my carry-on bag on the cart. I didn't realize I had left my bag—and my ring!—behind until I arrived at my parents' home. Of course I called the airport's lost-and-found, but because of the significance and value of the ring, I couldn't wait and do nothing. I drove back to the airport that night and again the next day to look for my bag, and I finally found it in the lost-and-found cage with the ring still inside it. When I opened it, I started sobbing and hugged the clerk who had opened the cage for me. I probably lost three pounds in three days from anxiety and lack of eating." —Tricia

5 Things You Need to Know About Your Partner Before You Get Engaged

0
0

You may think you know everything about your significant other. But despite your wealth of knowledge, there's still a chance you haven't asked the right questions to uncover certain key issues quite yet, says Terri Orbuch, Ph.D., relationship expert and author of 5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage From Good to Great. "When you're getting engaged to someone, there are certain things you need to know about them, partially to assess your compatibility and partially because communication, openness and trust are the foundations of a healthy relationship," says Orbuch.

5-things-engagement

Here, according to our experts, are five of those things you must know.

1. How your significant other feels about children.
This isn't talk you should leave until after you tie the knot. "Before getting in too deep, you should know how you each feel about children," says Orbuch. Discover whether your partner wants them. Then, she says, "find out how many your partner wants and when. Ask, what are your partner's views on parenting and gender roles? Can either of you imagine taking a break from a high-powered career in order to focus more on caregiving? How do you each see your roles as mom and dad?"

2. Whether you share the same values.
From family to religion, are you and your significant other in agreement? Or, asks Jane Greer, Ph.D., relationship expert and author of What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship, can you find a way to make room for your differing sets of values? "It's important to know you have similar values so you don't feel blindsided or surprised when your partner tells you what they're willing or unwilling to do in terms of shared goals," Greer explains.

3. Your partner's financial status.
Being compatible doesn't just come down to chemistry. Financial compatibility, Orbuch says, is also important. So before you tie the knot, it's best to know if you'll be taking on your partner's debts or whether you'll be able to reach your own financial goals with his or her help. Orbuch also suggests asking your partner if he or she is willing to share bank accounts, and how much he or she makes. "You'll need to know how the financial burden might be divided between the two of you, especially considering that money is the No. 1 thing most couples fight about," she says.

4. Whether you are sexually compatible.
Ask yourselves: Are your sex schedules and sex drives in sync? Do you approach sex with similar views, looking to share and receive the same things from the experience? "Explore the desire and attraction you have for one another so you can go into your relationship with a foundation for sexual intimacy that can help sustain you when things are difficult," advises Greer. Because if you know and understand one another's sexual needs, "you'll always have a baseline to get back to one another," she says.

5. You partner's level of commitment to work.
You can't marry your partner if he or she is already married to his or her job, Orbuch points out. "Look for signs that your partner is maintaining a moderately healthy work and life balance," Orbuch suggests, "and consider carefully whether you can handle a partnership that leaves you lonely most of the time."
