3 Conversations to Have Before You Get Engaged

Getting engaged is a big deal. After all, you're deciding to spend the rest of your life with someone! But there's more to it than just a sweet proposal story and a sparkly new ring on your left hand, and there are some things you and your significant other should talk about before you decide on forever. We talked to Dr. Jane Greer, New York City -based relationship expert and author of What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship about three big conversations you should have before you get engaged. They may not be the most romantic conversations, but addressing these hot-button topics in advance will help set you up for success.

"Remember," says Greer, "in any of these conversations, if your opinions differ, ask your partner why he or she feels that way, and how strongly they hold their opinion. Is it carved in stone? Or could they see themselves changing their opinion over the years? If your partner's opinion is set, then you have to make a decision on whether this is a deal-breaker for you, or whether you're willing to change your opinion for them."

What are your goals in terms of having — or not having — children?
Says Greer, "It's important to discuss this early on so you know that you're sharing the same vision and values in starting a family and raising children together." A good way to bring this up is to start by talking about how important having children down the line is (or isn't!) for you. Once you've explained where you stand, ask your what partner envisions for himself or herself, and if their desires line up with yours.

Where would you like to live?
Do you want to live in a big city? Have a backyard in the suburbs? Maybe you'd always planned on raising a family close to your parents? Greer points out that it's important for couples to "have a sense of whether you would be willing to relocate (and potentially leave family and friends) once you're married." Being on the same page as far as where you might want to grow old together will help you make those decisions in the future, whether it's for a job, family, or financial reasons.

What is the money situation?
Greer encourages couples to ask the following questions of themselves and their partners: What kind of financial goals do you have for yourself? What does your financial landscape look like? Is there debt that needs to be cleaned up before the marriage? Are you saving for a home or vacation down the road? How will you pay for your wedding? Money can be hard to discuss, but now is the time to be frank. "Discuss how you will prioritize financial obligations in your future life together. See which areas are important for each of you, find out where they line up, and talk about ways to compromise on the things that don't," says Greer.

Kim Kardashian Celebrates #tbt With Never-Before-Seen Pictures of Kanye’s Proposal

Not only was yesterday #tbt, it was also almost two years to the day when Kanye West proposed to Kim Kardashian. So Kim celebrated by sharing some never-before-seen pictures of their engagement.

They had welcomed their first child, daughter North West, in June of 2013. The proposal went down on October 21, 2013—Kim’s birthday—at AT&T Park in San Francisco. After Kim pulled into the parking lot, an orchestra started playing and she was blindfolded. “I had no idea what was about to happen!!!” she remembered. Here’s some scoop on her engagement ring.

The two went on to marry in May of 2014. (Here’s a wedding detail you haven’t heard.) Kim celebrated their one-year anniversary by sharing never-before-seen wedding pictures. They announced in May of this year that they’re expecting a second baby, which they later shared is a boy.

Interestingly, Kim is one of many married celebrities who don’t wear wedding rings. Here are more.

Wedding Pros Weigh In: 18 First-Dance Songs That Haven't Been Done to Death

We're far too familiar with the wedding songs that have been overdone, so we asked the pros—the people who've heard all of 'em—what songs they picked (or what they will pick) for their walk down the aisle. Have a listen.

wedding-dance

1. “Lay Your Heart Next to Mine” by Steve Azar
“It is a little unknown song by an overlooked country singer (not that I am a country fan...more a punk rock girl!) but I had purchased this CD (yes, I am that old) for another song that really spoke to me at the time and when I heard this song I knew immediately that is spoke perfectly to Jeff and me. Now if we had only practiced our first dance.”
—Laura Jacobson, Kismet Invitation Company

2.“You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMotagne

“I've yet to tie the knot myself, but I'd go with something mildly upbeat, yet still slow enough to look great dancing. There are no long, awkward musical pauses in the song, it is not too repetitive and it will keep your guests attention.”
—Alexandra Wise, Blush Botanicals

3. “Come Rain or Come Shine” by Ray Charles
“This is the song Chef Nimer and I (we’re partners in business and life!) dance to at our wedding (at The Parker in Palm Springs). With lyrics like "Happy together, unhappy together and won't it be fine? Days may be cloudy or sunny....we're in or we're out of the money"—it perfectly captures what the married days ahead would be together and the fact that no matter what - we go through it all together.”
—Jennifer Coman, Haute Chefs LA

4.“Dreams Are More Precious” by Enya

“My husband and I actually chose two songs for our first dance, one that was slow and beautiful to start, and one to surprise our guests with a choreographed dance thrown in there unexpectedly. The slow dance song we picked was "Dreams Are More Precious" by Enya, and mid-slow dance it switched to a little hip-hop number! One song represented how he had been there for me after my dad passed away and the other was the fun side of us and how we love dancing together!”
—Kara Stout, Kara Stout

5.“First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes

“For my second (and last) wedding, this past November, we eloped and didn’t have a first dance or song (no one there except us to hear it anyway), but the song playing in my head was "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes. It’s absolutely perfect and sweet, especially if you’re a little cynical. Happy to share this gem, since I’ll never use it out loud.”
—Jill Ryder, Shindig Bespoke

6. “Crush” by Dave Matthews Band

“I would say the best first dance song ever is "Crush" by Dave Matthews Band. It's definitely a song that's off the beaten path, but it's a perfect combination of slow and jazzy sultry parts that build into the more up tempo chorus. Plus, it's a pick that will earn you some serious cred with the music fans on your guest list.”
—Leah Weinberg, Color Pop Events

7. “Home” by Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeros

“My husband and I did our first dance to “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. We wanted something that was a little different and more upbeat than your typical romantic slow dance song. The lyrics just happened to be perfect as well. Toward the end of the song, all of our friends and family got up and joined us on the dance floor totally unsolicited! They danced around us in a circle while clapping to the beat of the song. It was amazing because neither of us love having all eyes on us. It’s one of my favorite memories from our wedding.”
—Jillian Kling, jillian rose photography

8. “Latch” by Sam Smith

—Ashley Ruelas & Beatriz Cisneros, The Detailed Look

9.“You and Me” the Wannadies
'

"This one my husband and I actually picked for our song. It's fun because you can vacillate between slow dancing and fast dancing. But, mainly I love the lyrics, it's funny and real and was so perfect for us.”
—Jamie Chang, Mango Muse Events

10.“Happy” by Pharrell

“I LOVE first dances because whenever I hear the song on the radio I think of the couple that selected it. Last year one of my favorites was “Happy” by Pharrell that ended in a conga line and everyone was on their feet (dancing or cheering). My hub and I danced to a medley that was choreographed by an amazing TV professional (he often works on Broadway and TV).”
—Cassandra Santor, Cassandra & Company Weddings

11.“Waste” by Phish

“My first dance song at my wedding was the song “Waste” by Phish. It’s a very simplistic love song about not needing to climb mountains, nor be an actor, nor be a writer to be happy—he just simply needs to “waste” his time with his lover. The song is about expressing a longing to “waste” your time
with the person you love. What I love most about this song is in an age of social media bragging, and everyone wanting to be a reality TV star, the simplistic message of only needing to be with the one you love is good enough. You don’t need to be doing something amazing every day, or brag-worthy, to be happy. Spending your time with the object of your love is far more important than any superficial jobs, titles, or social media status.”
— Luke Walker, Clark+Walker Studio

12. “We Will Dance” by Stephen Curtis Chapman
I love first dance songs that aren’t well known which is why for our first dance at our wedding, I chose “We Will Dance” by Stephen Curtis Chapman. It’s a lyrically beautiful song that details the course of a relationship from the beginning to being a sweet old couple still dancing. To this day, it’s one of my favorite songs wrapped in sweet memories.
Orangerie Events

13.“Luckiest” by Ben Folds Five

“My husband Troy and I danced to the "Luckiest" by Ben Folds Five on our wedding day and it will always be my favorite. Still to this day, as the years have come and gone, we have held the tradition on our anniversary of finding a moment to stop and dance together to it. Some years it has followed a fancy dinner, others there has been a pregnant belly between us and now it more often seems that we have had little ones clinging to our ankles as we have held each other but it has always reminded me that amidst it all, I am still the luckiest.”
—Heather Balliet, Amorology

14.“Better Together” by Jack Johnson

“Our clients this weekend are having their first dance to Jack Johnson’s Better Together. This song is entirely sweet with a soft but playful acoustic melody. Probably a more underrated first dance song, but definitely a favorite!”
—Mary Ellen Murphy, Off the Beaten Path Weddings

15."Spend My Life With You" by Tamia & Eric Benet

“My husband and I are obsessive over for classic R&B love songs, and this song completely encompasses the essence of love and the moment you know you've "found the one whom your soul loves" The sweet lyrics and the beauty of the melody make it the ultimate first dance song which is why we picked it for ours!”
—Pamela Augustus, Love Anne Joy Design & Events

16.“I’m Gonna Make You My Wife” by the Whispers
“The song that my hubby and I danced to was a classic "I'm Gonna Make You My Wife" by the Whispers. We had selected all of the music for our wedding well in advance. However, we were watching a movie and heard the song and knew from the first sentence that it would be the perfect first dance song! We took the dance floor and as soon as the song played, the entire crowd, young and old teared up as we danced. Almost seven years later and the song still makes me emotional!”
—Geomyra Lewis, Geomyra Lewis Weddings & Events

17.“Man on Fire” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

“One of my favorite first dance songs ever is ‘Man on Fire’ by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It’s not a song you usually hear at weddings, but the beat and lyrics are so memorable. One of my clients a few years ago danced to that song for their first dance in a redwood forest, under the stars, and towards the end of the song invited their guests onto the dance floor! It was the perfect way to kick off a night of dancing!”
—Mirelle Carmichael, Mirelle Carmichael Photography

18. “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat

webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen>

Lucky, Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat from Marcelo Spera on Vimeo.

“Our wedding song was “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat, not only is it a beautiful song, with perfect lyrics for a first dance, but it was sung at our wedding by my brother and my daughter (who was eight years old at the time). It was incredibly special and we are so very lucky!”

Shop for a Wedding Dress Without Making Yourself Miserable: Here's the Secret

$

Wedding dress shopping can be a surprisingly miserable experience. You’re not exactly sure what you want, your mom has a very specific style of wedding dress in mind and gets worked up when you ask try on anything else, and your bridesmaid entourage just wants to get to lunch already. (And if your future mother-in-law’s in tow, forget about it.)

1-wedding-dress-shopping-0928-stocksy

So here’s how to make the whole process painless: Go alone.

Yes, it’s not the wedding-dress-shopping excursion we see in the movies (or on Say Yes to the Dress, where sometimes even dear old Dad joins in—say what?!). But it’s probably the only way you’re going to be able to relax and take your time without feeling like everyone either wants to leave or stuff you into a cupcake gown against your will. Think about it: You don’t bring a crew (or your mom!) when you shop for shoes or jeans, and even if you’re shopping with a friend for those things, she’s shopping too. Watching you shop (especially for hours) is un-fun for your friends. And unless your mom can keep her cool—and keep her opinions to herself—she’s probably just going to stress you out.

So go alone, the first time, anyway. Or bring one trusted friend who you know will have your best interest in mind. (Don’t drag the friend who’s itching to get engaged or one who’s just gone through a breakup. That just feels mean.) Once you know about what you want—even if you’ve had your “Say yes!” moment—you can come back with your mom and ’maids* and either pretend it’s your first time or just tell them you’d like help narrowing down the selection. (A bridal boutique insider we know says tons of girls fake it just to avoid upsetting their moms—which feels weird, yes, but my mom would have died if she thought I tried on wedding dresses without her. Hence the aforementioned “misery.”)

*Wedding dress shopping outings should always be optional for your bridesmaids. If you have someone who’s excited to join you, great. But give the rest of ’em a pass.

3 Trends That Shocked Us at Bridal Fashion Week—and 2 We Totally Saw Coming

The best part of any Fashion Week is always the element of surprise. Yes, there are the trends we could have called before Bridal Fashion Week kicked off—see Nos. 1 and 2 below. But we get the most excited about the unexpected trends that somehow dominate a bunch of major shows. Like, did the designers hold a confab ahead of time and decide that wedding dresses with watercolor flowers are a major THING? Because they are. Here are four more trends we noticed.

TREND 1: OVERSKIRTS
Thanks, Olivia Palermo. After the multihyphenate wed in playful Carolina Herrera shorts paired with a voluminous tulle skirt, we saw overskirts march down pretty much every runway this season. Some are part of the dress, as with the Tara La Tour gown below, while others can be removed for second reception look.

TREND 3: 3-D FLOWERS
Faux blooms that popped off the dresses were almost a prevalent on the bridal runways as the color white. They add dimension and a hint of romance without being attention-grabby, like, say, sequins.

TREND 3: SHOULDERS AND SHEER
This one is a fun new twist on the illusion bodice we’ve seen in heavy rotation for a few years now. The updated design emphasizes the sheer portion across the decolletage while splashing details more dramatically around the shoulders.

TREND 4: WATERCOLOR FLOWERS ON WHITE
Watercolor-y flowers against a white backdrop aren’t necessarily a new idea—here are two previous iterations we love—but the trend certainly moved closer to the mainstream this season, with variations from you-can-barely-see-’em (they’re on the bodice of that Carolina Herrera gown) to flat-out bold (ahem, Romona—love it!).

TREND 5: RACERBACK BODICES
This one felt totally fresh: After season after season of tank straps and then bare backs, loads of designers experimented with racerback bodices this season. There are two examples below, but there were more on the runways—Vera Wang and Carolina Herrera, to name a couple—but not every designer sends rear-view shots.

Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy Are Reportedly Planning a Summer Wedding

3-mary-kate-olsen-olivier-sarkozy-engaged-engagement-engagement-rings-rings-celebrity-weddings-1018

After almost two years of engagement, Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy, who have been together since 2012, have finally set a date for their wedding.

A source told Us Weekly, "They're leaning toward a June event in the Hamptons." Although a second insider adds they have "changed their plans a million times, her family can't even keep up!" So we wouldn't be too surprised if their plans adjust a little bit before the big day. But, as of now, Mary-Kate will be trading in her vintage Cartier from Sotheby's for a wedding band in the Hamptons.

This will be the first marriage for both the 46-year-old French banker and the 29-year-old Full House star. And (early) congrats to them both—we can't wait to find out all the details from their summer nuptials.

Look, we like engagement photos. Lovey-dovey couple, pretty scenery—what’s not to like? Engagement photos with four-legged guest stars are always our favorites, of course. And when the four-legged friend in question is really excited about the photo sesh, well, those engagement photos are the best of all.

Minneapolis-St. Paul-based photographer Karin Berdal of DnK Photography made headlines recently when an exuberant Dachshund named Louie photo-bombed his way through most of his humans’ engagement session.

6 Signs You're Going to Get Engaged in the Next Six Months

$

Brace yourselves, ladies: It’s almost engagement season, that stretch from Thanksgiving to Valentine’s Day when engagement rings crop up on Facebook so frequently that you’re practically blinded by all the bling. Of course, if you’re in a long-term relationship and marriage is on the table, it’s also the time when you might start wondering if a sparkly engagement ring is going to land on your left hand in the near future. Not sure whether your guy’s going to propose soon? Here are six hints that all signs to point to yes.

signs-hes-going-to-propose-1028-stocksy

He’s suddenly weird about spending money.
He’s been OK with a new furniture purchase or an impromptu vacation in the past, so why did he bristle when you mentioned a long weekend in the Bahamas or upgrading to a two-bedroom apartment? Possibly because he’s trying to save for an engagement ring, so he doesn’t want to commit his hard-earned cash elsewhere right now.

He’s initiated some serious discussions about your long-term plans. (Or you’ve already had them.)
No one wants to go out on a limb only to get an, “Eh, thanks but no thanks.” Before your guy gets down on one knee, he’ll want to be pretty certain that you’ll say yes. If the two of you casually throw around expressions like, “when we’re married” or “our future kids,” he’s probably confident. But if you’re not there yet, he might ask, out of the blue, “So where do you think we’ll live when we have a family?”

He’s newly knowledgeable about diamonds—or has started to question your jewelry preferences.
If your drops a term like “cushion cut” or “bezel set” when he’s never mentioned jewelry in the past, that’s a sure sign he’s already taken a trip to the jeweler. Or if he says something like, “So-and-so’s engagement ring is weird, right?” he might be fishing for clues.

He looks even MORE like a deer in headlights when someone asks, “When are you guys getting engaged?”
No long-term couple likes hearing this question, ever. (It’s the single girl’s equivalent of, “Why are you single?!”) But if your guy breaks into a sweat or looks extra-twitchy, there’s a chance he has a proposal in the works and is nervous about spilling the beans.

He suddenly has insider intel about your parents.
Of course your mom golfs on Tuesdays and your dad plays cards on Wednesday nights. You’ve always known the nitty-gritty of their days, but if your boyfriend busts out with some little-known facts, it might be a clue that he’s been chatting with them (perhaps to ask permission or gauge your taste in jewelry) on the sly.

He’s started to develop strong opinions about other people’s weddings.
He was always game for celebratory shots or a spin on the dance floor, but now at weddings he brings up the merits of offering an open bar or says something like, “I would never want a February wedding.” If he has a new interest in weddings, he might have started contemplating his own for the first time.

We’ve been fans of the Twobirds bridesmaid dress—the original convertible bridesmaid dress—since the brand launched. We’ll tell you who does: The 14 Glamour staffers who volunteered to model the dress in our offices earlier this week. Sure, we prompted them to twist and twirl—but we promise, all of them had fun. Two of our models, Lindsey and Maggie, wore the optional bandeau under the dress. The other 12 were comfortable going braless, and none suffered wardrobe malfunctions.

The full-length dress retails for $340. There’s also a short version for $310. Of course that’s more expensive than what you’d pay for a mass-market dress, but if you (and your bridesmaids, obviously) love this dress, it might just be worth it. And if you feel bad asking your bridesmaids to splurge, we’re a big fan of brides who pay for at least a portion of their friends’ bridesmaid dresses.

Also, check out Christina’s pic and Caroline’s second one. The creme color would be lovely for a bride—and $340 is more than reasonable for a wedding dress.

Reality TV's most famous LC is now an LT. Lauren Conrad switched up her initial game when she married hubby William Tell. And while we still know her as a Conrad, she's technically Mrs. Tell—and has the jewelry to prove it.

Here's How to Love Your Spouse—Even After You Discover His Most Annoying Habits

When you were dating, your main man presented his best self. But now that you've tied the knot, he's set aside his suave ways in favor of storing his socks by the bedside and leaving his hair in the sink. "You're not putting your best face on or cleaning the house because your partner is coming to visit," says Jane Greer, Ph.D., relationship expert and author of What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship. "Once you live with someone, your habits emerge: If you hate to do dishes or don't mind being sloppy; if you like to stay up late; if you like to sleep with the lights on. You're much more exposed to all of the annoying things that were never in your face before." Here's how to love them in spite—or in the face of—those annoying traits.

annoying

Figure out why the habit annoys you so much.
When you trip over your husband's misplaced shoes, your annoyance may not be directed at his kicks or him. The act could "remind you of someone else and whatever happened in that relationship that hurt you," points out Lesli Doares, marriage coach and author of Blueprint for a Lasting Marriage. "It may also be about a belief system the person learned as a child that hasn't really been examined for whether it still fits today." If you realize the annoyance isn't about your husband at all, you can work to not let it affect your relationship.

Ask: What am I willing to do to stop getting annoyed?
Greer says it's important to determine not only how annoying certain habits are, but also to "figure out what you're prepared to do to make things more comfortable yourself," she says. For example: "If he never does dishes, decide if you're happier with dirty dishes in the sink or just doing them yourself. Then have a talk with him about balancing the responsibilities between you both."

Focus on what he does right.
No, you'll never love the way he leaves crumbs behind on the kitchen table. But "when you're faced with the annoying habit, you can choose to think of something else your partner does that you find wonderful," says Doares. "You can actually say to yourself, 'I don't much care for this, but it isn't as important as what my partner brings to my life.'"

Talk to him about his habits.
You can kindly bring up the behaviors to your guy, saying, "'You do this a lot and I find it really annoying. What's the best way for us to deal with this?'" suggests Greer. "Instead of nagging him to change all the time, have an honest conversation and come up with a plan to make your lives better."

And remember: "Living with someone can be as challenging as you want to make it," Doares points out. "If you are willing to make room for your partner's way of doing things most of the time, they will be more likely to be open to requests for things that are really difficult for you. If everything your partner does annoys you, you might want to examine if there is something deeper going on that hasn't been addressed in a satisfactory way."

Jamie Chung's Wedding Dress: The Mystery of Her Couture Monique Lhuillier Gown, Solved

When celebrities go to a big-time bridal designer for their wedding dress, the one-of-a-kind dress they walk down the aisle wearing usually starts as an existing silhouette that the designer updates with elements from other gowns.

It seems like that was the case with Jamie Chung’s wedding dress. (She and longtime boyfriend Bryan Greenberg were married on Halloween, if you missed the news.) The Once Upon a Time actress wore a long-sleeve Monique Lhuillierwedding dress that looked—up top, anyway—a lot like the Autumn Gown from Monique’s fall 2015 runway show.

But Jamie’s wedding dress had a cut-to-the-knee slit we don’t see on Autumn, and possibly some tulle going on in the back. That you might recognize from Monique’s Fabrienne Gown from spring 2015 runway.

It seems the tulle overskirt on both Jamie’s dress and Fabrienne are removable.

Picking your weddings shoes should be easy, in theory: Assuming your wedding dress is long, not many people are going to notice 'em. Plus, most brides kick off their heels once the DJ turns up Beyonce, so even you won’t see them for a good chunk of the evening. And still, brides stress over finding the exact high-but-not-too-high, pretty-but-practical heel that perfectly matches their color palette—at least to last them through the ceremony and photos. To help out, we found 50 pairs of wedding shoes we love (at least one for pretty much every color scheme with a healthy number of “something blues” mixed in) and they all ring in at less than $100. Cross one thing off your wedding to-do list.

Prince Harry Just Wants to Get Married, Have Some Kids, Get a Dog

Stop thinking about Prince Harry as the fun-loving, redheaded party bro of Prince William (and brother-in-law of Kate Middleton). The royal spare is supposedly more than ready to settle down, a fact that may or may not have to do with turning 31 last month and seeing his big bro embrace the domestic life with two little ones.

The British Daily Express is reporting that a source close to the family is saying the prince is ready to make it official with some lucky lady (who would likely become a Duchess like Kate).

"Harry's desire to settle down, have his own family, and be like his brother is quite a strong one. He wants to have some kids and get a dog and be ordinary. He just doesn't know how to achieve it," the source said, revealing that Harry's step-mother Camilla is eager to help play matchmaker, while pops Prince Charles wants nothing to do with it. "Camilla knows it will make Charles very happy to see Harry settled down with the right girl, just as William is. [She] loves to be involved."

prince-harry-walking-wounded-event-2015

Regarding Charles' reluctance, the idea has been floated that he's especially wary since he was right around Harry's age when he was pressured to marry Princess Diana.

The prince has had two widely publicized relationships, with lawyer Chelsy Davy and then with dancer Cressida Bonas. And while the fervor surrounding the latter might have died down some, she's stayed in the limelight with some fashion gigs and gorgeous hair.

Additional Harry news? That sexy/scruffy beard is new, and we're loving it.

Hannah Davis' Engagement Ring: First Photos of the Bling Derek Jeter Proposed With

Hannah Davisengagement ring is a home run. Former MLB star Derek Jeter always went big on the baseball field, and he seems to be playing by the same rules post-retirement: The engagement ring the former Yankee picked up to propose to his Sports Illustrated model fiancee is positively massive, the first photos confirm. (Their engagement news broke last week, if you missed it.) Hannah took her mom and her new engagement ring for a walk down New York City’s Fifth Avenue yesterday, and passersby were likely blinded by the bling.

The ring appears to feature a round-cut diamond and more bulky diamonds on the band. Mark Keeney, vice president of marketing at online jeweler Ritani, guessed the stone is “no less than 3 carats,” but other experts are guessing it’s closer to the 4- to 6-carat range, which seems more accurate to us considering Hannah’s 5’10”. Here’s similar bling from Ritani.

This Wisdom Tooth Engagement Ring Wins "Unique Engagement Rings" Forever

When your girlfriend wants an engagement ring that really stands out from the crowd, a diamond center stone just isn’t going to cut it. Which is why Lucas Unger proposed to girlfriend Carlee Leifkes with an engagement ring made from a wisdom tooth—his wisdom tooth, to be exact.

Knowing that Carlee didn’t want a diamond, Lucas asked his father to mail one of the wisdom teeth he had removed when he was younger, and the two designed the engagement ring around it.

“When we’d spoken about it, I’d said that diamonds are so overrated,” Carlee said. “My birthstone is a diamond. I don’t need one to prove how much someone loves me. He’d already moved all the way from Canada to do that.”

So incredibly excited to marry my best friend, the man who knows that his wisdom tooth means more to me than a diamond....

Posted by Carlee Alisan Leifkes on Monday, November 2, 2015

Carlee told Buzzfeed News that the “we’re engaged!” posts she sees on Facebook are “almost a contest of who has the biggest ring and whose fiance loves them the most. And here I am with the coolest ring I’ve ever seen in my life! What does a diamond signify in anybody’s relationship? I literally have my husband’s wisdom on my finger.”

This Bridesmaid Can Make $1,000+ for Every Wedding She's In. Where Do We Sign Up?

Organizing RSVPs, helping with the gift registry, assembling favors: There are people who make a career out of doing all these tasks, and they’re generally called wedding planners. But for brides who don’t want (or can’t afford) a wedding planner, those tasks often fall on the bridesmaids. Which feels a little unfair. A bridesmaid’s “job” is to buy the dress and show up for the wedding—not to help with the seating chart or manage an on-edge future mother-in-law.

Enter Jen Glantz, the self-proclaimed “bridesmaid for hire,” who will help you with all of the above tasks—for a fee, of course—and walk down the aisle on your big day in a dress of your choosing, if you like.

“Woke up to a beautiful text from one of my October brides this morning. We caught up for a half an hour about her honeymoon and life post-wedding & then she sent me this memory. Her wedding was one of my favorites because she taught me a rare, unforeseen lesson about love. I can't wait to share that whole story with you some day soon.”

With packages ranging from $199 to more than $1,000, Jen brings plenty of bridesmaid-ing experience to the table. (She started her business after being asked to be a bridesmaid four times in one year—and twice in once week!) She’ll pick up where your slacker bridesmaids {everyone has one } drop the ball—or help with tasks that your bridesmaids just feel “meh” about so that you and your friends can enjoy the rest of the process.

”Congrats to the beautiful bride, Laura. Yesterday was a gorgeous fairy tale. All my love.”

Yes, $1,000+ (even $199) is a lot of your hard-earned cash, but it makes sense to pay someone to do the “maid” part of “bridesmaid-ing” so your friends don’t wind up resenting you by the time your wedding rolls around. Plus, your bridesmaids probably already have jobs, so seems more appropriate to delegate tasks to a paid ’maid, rather than handing out wedding to-do lists for your friends to tackle in their down time.

If you’re feeling no-ish about having a virtual stranger stand up for you on your wedding day, maybe instead of paying a bridesmaid-for-hire you could offer to chip in for the bridesmaid dress for a friend who’s joined you at every fitting or took the reins on planning your bridal shower while everyone else kinda slacked. A little recognition—especially when it comes in the form of $$$—tends to go a long way in making people happy.

The Surprising, "Very Casual" Way Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Said Their Wedding Vows

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt may have hosted a big wedding in France in August—the bride wore a Versace wedding gown covered in her kids’ artwork, you might recall—but the way they actually said “I do” was a little more low-key.

brad-pitt-angelina-jolie-together-airport

In an interview that appeared in today’s The New York Times, Angelina explained the “very casual” way the duo became husband and wife before their big day:

“The ceremony was in France, but we had to do things legally in California. One day I was in the edit room, and [Brad] was doing something and an assistant said, ‘You have to sign some papers.’ So we came back and between meetings we were told, ‘Here’s your license.’ Then someone said, ‘The judge is outside.’ We both said, ‘What do you mean, the judge is outside?’ Then the judge came in, this lovely guy, and at some point, Brad said, ‘Shouldn’t we be standing up?’ The judge said, ‘No.’ Then suddenly we realized we were married, in the most unceremonial way possible.”

Thankfully, to the bride and groom, swapping vows wasn’t the most important part of their relationship:

“It was just a nice thing. For me, the big moment was when [we] signed the [joint adoption] papers for Maddox and Zahara. That was a decision to parent together, to commit to being a part of each other’s lives for the rest of my life. So [marriage] wasn’t close in comparison.”
