8 Sneaky Ways to Save Money When You’re Wedding Planning

$

No matter how big your wedding budget is, chances are you’ll suffer from sticker shock at least once while you’re wedding planning. {A slice of wedding cake costs how much?!*} And if your budget is more modest, you’ll likely be cutting corners at every turn. And still no one wants a wedding that feels cheap. To help you plan a wedding that looks posh but doesn’t send you into massive debt, consider these eight tips from celebrity wedding planner and designer Jamie O’Donnell of Jamie O’ & Co.
*More than $10, sometimes!

Go halfsies with your rental company. If you want something luxe that your vendors don’t offer, like the high-impact four-foot-wide goose-down chandelier by Vita, below, ask if the rental company will buy it—or split the cost with you. Then the company can add it to its stock and rent it to other couples after your wedding.

Trim the size of your entree. Ask your caterer if you can serve a four-ounce piece of steak, chicken, or fish instead of six ounces. Your guests won’t notice the difference, but you should, in your budget, says Jamie.

Curate the bar. Somewhere between full open bar and a strict “just beer and wine” offering, there’s the curated bar: If you know your guests are big vodka drinkers or you want to serve the watermelon margarita you had on your first date, you can add a couple select types of booze (or a signature cocktail) for much less than you’d pay for an open bar.

Up your glam factor with metallics and mercury glass. As the inside of any palace will tell you, metallic or mirrored accents hint at luxury. Jamie suggests shopping home stores for a mix-and-match selection of gilded vases, mercury glass candleholders, or golden table accents.

Book a hotel, country club, or dedicated wedding venue. If the space you’re hosting your wedding in is set up for the occasion, it will likely be a more affordable option, overall, says Jamie. The price-per-head or booking fee (often a few thousand dollars) might seem high at first glance, but when you factor in that you’d need to rent everything from a dance floor to a bathroom trailer for a backyard wedding, the hotel may wind up being way less expensive.

Choose flowers that can multitask. Work with your florist to design arrangements than can do double-duty from the ceremony to the reception. She should have ideas for incorporating aisle decorations into centerpieces or arranging bridesmaid bouquets on your candy buffet or cake table. So this:

Becomes this:

Copycat fancy calligraphy. Custom invitations that are hand-calligraphed one by one are the ultimate luxury. Mimic the look by having a calligrapher handwrite your invitation and then create a digital file, which you can send to the printer. If you’re working with a smaller print operation, ask about letterpress; if you agree to print all your stationery with that printer, the company might agree to letterpress your invitation for less. Either way, opt for the thickest bright-white paper you can afford and black ink for a classic, timeless invite.

Stock up on candles. Votive candles are inexpensive but add high-end impact. Mix a ton of votives and pillar candles around your centerpieces, and they’ll “make your reception space flicker with a romantic, upscale vibe,” says Jamie.

31 Gorgeous Strapless Wedding Dresses Remind Us Why Brides Still Love Strapless Wedding Dresses

Yes, brides have been clamoring for wedding dresses with straps and sleeves for years. And with more tastemaking brides opting for covered-up wedding dresses (Kate Middleton, Ivanka Trump, Nikki Reed, to name a few) it would seem that strapless wedding dresses might be falling out of fashion. And still, bridal shops insist that strapless wedding dresses are as popular as ever—the most popular neckline being sold. By a long shot. Of course, with designers turning out strapless wedding dresses like the gowns below—all from the spring 2016 runways—it’s easy to see why.

9 Next-Generation Halo Engagement Rings You’ll Love

$

Halo engagement rings are always lovely—we’re particularly fond of them in yellow and rose gold. But since they’ve surged in popularity over the past five or so years, a plain halo setting can feel a little “been there, seen that.” (Particularly for people who {ahem! } look at engagement rings all day long.) If you want the prettiness and extra sparkle that come with a halo setting—the result of a diamond surrounded by diamonds—but don’t want an engagement ring that looks like all your friends’ you’re in luck: We found nine next-generation halo engagement rings that feel totally fresh. Lots are by West Coast designer Single Stone, who’s just doing new takes on diamonds-on-diamonds better than anyone right now.

Fighting Over Wedding Plans? Here's How to Deal

Wedding planning is a joyous time for a couple. But it's also a time when a countless number of big and little decisions have to be agreed upon by two people — people with different values, desires, needs and quirks. This can be a recipe for — to put it mildly — spirited disagreement.

argue-wedding-planning

Recalls *Janet, who recently moved her wedding date back six months to June 2015, "Before we got engaged *Dan and I never shouted at one another. Suddenly, with a tight deadline looming we found ourselves deadlocked and angry over every little detail of the wedding. It was horrible.

Fighting over wedding plans can be viewed as a dress rehearsal for the inevitable power struggles that arise after a couple says, "I do." Both the bride and groom-to-be have spent a lifetime putting their own needs first. All of a sudden each is expected to place more importance on the welfare and happiness of another human being — to exchange "I" for "we."

This is not an easy task. But through the process of creating a wedding that is not perfect, but perfect enough, you are learning the art of compromise and communication. Meaning both of you are building a durable foundation for a satisfying life together.

The best way to problem-solve rather than become tangled up in emotional and verbal knots is to address one area of dispute at a time. For instance — budget. To keep the discussion from devolving into an argument about everything from the time he kept you waiting at the catering hall to his annoyance with the deep sigh you give whenever he says the word "no" — focus strictly on budget!

That focused discussion might go thusly: Each of you separately ranks all the items and services that feel most essential for your magical day. Compare lists — the items that show up on both (e.g., great band) should be invested in more heavily than items that aren't as important to either of you. On items one person feels very strongly about, the other should give in, and vice versa. Thus a compromise crafted.

Keep in mind there is no right choice — it's all about wanting to make another person happy as well as yourself. A great resource that can help couples discuss, not dispute, when they have areas of disagreement: Take Back Your Wedding: Managing the People Stress of Wedding Planning

As for *Janet, she believes pushing back the wedding date was the smartest move she and her fiancé could have made. "The wedding was taking priority over our relationship. Rather than sacrifice the love we have for each other to plan the perfect event, we gave ourselves time and space to breathe. The wedding is important but in the grand scheme of things, it's just one day."

The way the couple now handles disagreements over planning the coming wedding is by remembering the priority is their life together, not the party that will proceed it. *Janet explains, "The worst arguments happened when we lost sight of what we were trying to accomplish as a team!

It’s raining through Fashion Week in New York City tonight, but there’s still wedding-worthy weather in Laguna Beach—or thereabouts. About two hours north of the city that made her famous, Kristin Cavallari—now married and a mom with baby No. 3 on the way—stepped out in a bridesmaid dress and a floral crown for a friend’s wedding.

Newlyweds no more: Four days after her Fashion Week debut, Lauren Conrad celebrated her one-year anniversary by sharing a snippet from her and William Tell’s big day.

The two swapped vows in an intimate ceremony in front of close friends and family along the coast of California. Lauren wore two custom Badgley Mischka wedding dresses. (You can see both in the clip above.)

Today in Celebrity Bridesmaids: Snooki Wore THE Sparkliest Bridesmaid Dress for Her BFF’s Wedding

Some brides want their bridesmaids to blend into the scenery. They dress them in bridesmaid dresses in understated colors and ho-hum shapes to ensure that all eyes are trained on the real star of the day: themselves.

Snooki’s best friend Jackie, who was married yesterday, took the opposite approach, picking THE brightest, sparkliest bridesmaid dresses you ever did see for her gaggle of bridesmaids—I counted at least seven.

Trust me when I say this pic doesn’t do the bling factor or the color justice. To get the full effect, check Snooki’s Snapchat (username: nicsnooki) quickly, before the pics and video expire. It’s kind of like Peaches N Cream Barbie—if she got lost in a sequin factory. In the best possible way. I mean, is it the exact dress I’d pick for my bridesmaids? Probably not. But A+ for letting your bridesmaids sparkle and shine—and picking a dress that doesn’t make them look dumpy.

Whoa—Blake Lively Almost Skipped This Major Part of Wedding Planning

From what we know about Blake Lively's wedding to Ryan Reynolds, there's no doubting that it was a gorgeous, supremely romantic affair. That said, we just found out it was nearly a slightly less organized event, with a friend of the bride saving the day and laying down the seating-chart law.

blake-lively-loose-wavy-hair

During a dinner held this weekend to toast the new Parisian style bible penned by the actress's friend Angie Niles, the stunning Mrs. Reynolds clinked her glass to make a little toast. And that's when we found out that Blake almost didn't have a seating chart for her guests.

"It's dog eats dog. Whoever sits next to each other is going to sit next to each other. It's only family," she remembered telling Angie the night before the big day, whereupon her pal did what many organized friends would do and immediately got busy getting people seated. While we don't have any info on what method was used for the Lively-Reynolds wedding, we hope it was as organized as the color-coded version perfected by celebrity planner Mindy Weiss.

A Beautiful Wedding Tradition You May Not Have Seen, But Should

$
0
0

Americans are not shy about finding beauty in wedding traditions from other cultures and religions. True to our “melting pot” nature, we’re inclined to see inspiration around the globe. For example: Plenty of couples today get married under a canopy (a Jewish tradition) and paper cranes (a Japanese tradition) have been wildly popular wedding decor over the past five or so years—see here. Here’s another beautiful tradition.

2-throw-flowers-at-the-bride-and-groom-0916-instagram

3-throw-flowers-at-the-bride-and-groom-0916-instagram

A Persian-Jewish tradition for luck and celebrating, this literally translates to “throw flowers at the bride and groom.” It usually happens during the cake-cutting, according to our Persian-Jewish source, but in the top picture it appears to be going down on the dance floor. Basically, guests just pluck flowers from the arrangements and create a petal rainstorm over the couple. If you’re going to be a “throw flowers at the bride and groom” pioneer, you’d probably have to inform a few key parties (or your wedding party) ahead of time, so your guests know what’s happening.

5 Under-$350 Wedding Dresses From the LAST Place You’d Think to Buy a Wedding Dress

When you picture yourself wedding dress shopping, there’s probably a bridal boutique with soft lighting and maybe a flute of champagne. You probably don’t picture finding a wedding dress while you’re in sweats and on the couch with your laptop looking at light fixtures—but look what we stumbled across while doing just that.

Five lovely wedding dresses, all from overstock.com. Yes, really. Is it where you planned to buy your wedding dress? Probably not. But they’re super-affordable (all less than $350) and they ship for free in three to six days—a LOT faster than a boutique, which will take around eight weeks to get your gown. And, as long as the dress isn’t marked Final Sale, you can always return it. Or exchange it for one of those light fixtures.

For the Last Time: No, You Can’t Wear White to a Wedding. Period.

$
0
0

Every spring, when wedding invitations start dropping through people’s mail slots, we get a flurry of emails from soon-to-be wedding guests asking, “Can I wear white to the wedding?” Popular variations include, “Can I wear this floral dress with a white background to the wedding?” “Can I wear this white-on-topcolor blocked dress to the wedding?” Rationales include, “It’s the only dress that fits me.” “It’s the only dress I like.” “I’ll add a pop of color with a sweater.” And, “But the bride said it’s OK.”

And still our answer, forever and always, is no. No, you cannot wear white to a wedding. Period.

So we’ll field one last email, and then we’re putting the the issue to bed.

Writes Save the Date reader Maddie:

I know that this is against the rules, but you know that feeling when you find that perfect dress and you can’t let go? So I have that problem. I’m going to my boyfriend’s friend’s wedding, and I don’t know the bride. So I really, really like this dress and I need advice: Can I can pull this off? I can throw some fancy shoes and bag and necklace. You know add more color to it. What do you think? Here's THE dress.

can-i-wear-white-to-a-wedding-0917-courtesy-1

Asos Petite Cowl Back Midi Dress in Sparkle White, $67.20.

Here are our thoughts:

No.

Also: Seriously, no.

And we can hear you saying, BUT… so we’re going to answer your BUTs… right now.

BUT… I said I was going to add more color!
Unless you’re going to “add more color” by putting another, non-white dress over it, this dress is off-limits. No.

BUT… It’s the only dress that’s in my price range.
No.

BUT… It’s the only dress that looks good one me.
No.

BUT… What if I ask the bride and she says it’s OK?
Don’t ask the bride. If you do, she might just say yes because she doesn’t want to get a bridezilla rep. But even if she says yes and she’s really, truly OK with it, I promise you someone at her wedding isn’t going to be. And you don’t want to be forever remembered as the random girlfriend-of-a-friend who wore white to the wedding. You just don’t. So again: No.

You can buy another dress, you can borrow another dress, you can rent another dress, you can dye a white dress—you can skip the wedding and stay home and wear this dress—but you cannot wear a white dress to a wedding.

We don’t care what the silhouette is (“But it doesn’t look like a wedding dress!”) or the color (“But it’s light cream!”). The only exception—the only one—is if the bride and groom specifically request that their guests wear white. In that case, by all means: Yes! Please wear this dress.

In every other case: No.

But, good news: You CAN wear black to a wedding!

5 Things You Shouldn't Feel Guilty About During Wedding Planning

$

brides-logo

From where to get hitched to narrowing down the guest list, wedding planning can seem like a never-ending list of to-dos, ugh. While it's technically "your day", you can't help but think how every single decision you make will affect your loved ones; it's simply human nature. Remember: you can't please everyone though, and you certainly shouldn't try. So if there are five things not to feel guilty about during the planning process, it's these.

bride

1. Not having a huge wedding.
There will always be those people that get upset/offended that they weren't invited to your big day, even after they find out how small the guest list is. Wedding size is a very personal decision, one that you should never be made to feel guilty about. Hey, haters gonna hate though!

2. Not being able to give everyone a plus one.
Think of it this way: if you were made of money, it would be a non-issue, right? Weddings are expensive, however, and you have to keep costs down somehow. If your friends don't understand or think you're being selfish, that's their issue, not yours. You shouldn't have to sacrifice the type of wedding you want to accommodate a date for everyone. Obviously, long-term partners and husbands/wives are a different story.

3. Not asking someone to be a bridesmaid.
Maybe you've grown apart over the years, or she's your sister-in-law but you're not close at all. Whatever the reason may be, by no means should you ever be guilt tripped into asking someone to be a part of your big day. If it's going to be an issue and you worry you'll feel bad about not including her down the road, either be upfront about who your bridesmaids are from the start or ask her to participate in the wedding in some other way before you propose to your maids. This way, it won't seem like such an after-thought.

4. Having the bachelorette party you want.

Always dreamt of jet setting to Mexico to spend a few days lounging poolside and sipping cocktails with little umbrellas in them for your bachelorette? By all means, go for it! Chances are, there will be some friends who won't be able to afford it, and that's fine, as long as you aren't a total bridezilla about it, of course. You can always plan a local night out for anyone who can't come and have your maid of honor (assuming she can go) let everyone know you understand people are busy, have demanding jobs and it's a lot of money so no hard feelings at all if they can't make it.

5. Getting gifts.
Even if you didn't create a registry or requested no gifts, people who give them to you genuinely want to do so from the bottom of their hearts, trust us. In fact, most wedding guests love showering the newlywed couple with gifts and would hate for you to feel a single ounce of guilt for receiving them. So just be grateful is our best advice.

Here’s a Sneak Peek at Leonard and Penny’s Big Bang Theory Wedding! (It’s On, People!)

Looks like we’re going to have a Big Bang wedding! Despite the fact that Leonard (Johnny Galecki) admitted to kissing another woman, he and Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) have landed in Las Vegas and are ready to say “I do” when the show returns next Monday.

From Entertainment Weekly:

“The show is moving forward in big brave ways and so are Leonard and Penny,” executive producer Steve Molaro tells EW, noting that while the relationship is currently strained, Penny “thinks she can get past this.” “She knows they’ve been together a long time. She’s telling herself, ‘It was years ago and we weren’t married and it was only making out. I can get past this. Let’s keep moving forward.’”

“People have rocky patches in their lives — Sheldon and Amy and Leonard and Penny and you can either give up or you can work on them,” Molaro continues. “I would say, for both couples, sometimes things need to get worse before they get better.”

Allison Williams was a vision in white on her wedding day. The Girls actress—who married College Humor founder Ricky Van Veen in a top-secret ranch wedding yesterday—took to Instagram to share a picture of her wedding dress, a custom gown by Oscar de la Renta.

On the A-list guest list, according to Us: John Mayer, Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen, Allison's Girls costar Lena Dunham, Andy Cohen, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson, who plays Allison’s mother on Girls.

Allison and Ricky met through mutual friends and dated for three years before getting engaged in February of last year. (Click here for a photo of Allison Williams’ engagement ring, if you need a reminder.) In February of this year, Allison told Seth Meyers that she and Ricky postponed their big day in light of her father, Brian Williams’, suspension from NBC Nightly News.

Julianne Hough’s Gorgeous Engagement Ring Reminds Us of Blake Lively's

Most eyes were on the gorgeous gowns on last night’s Emmy red carpet (or the rainbows), but ours were on the bling—and it did not disappoint. Julianne Hough arrived with brother Derek—and her brand-new engagement ring. (She and NHL center Brooks Laich announced their engagement last month, if you missed the news.)

If Julianne’s gorgeous ring is giving you major deja vu, there’s a good reason. It’s strikingly similar to another engagement ring we love:

Blake Lively’s!

Makes sense, since both sparklers were designed by celebrity favorite Lorraine Schwartz. The settings and the size of the center stones seem almost identical, but Blake’s engagement ring (from husband Ryan Reynolds, of course) features a pinkish diamond. And I think Julianne’s band is yellow or rose gold where Blake’s appears to be platinum or white gold. Still, the resemblance is as striking as the rings.

We’ll go on and on about why you just CAN’T wear white to a wedding and what we think your wedding guests care about, but if you want advice from someone who’s out there planning the weddings and calling the shots every day, you should listen to celebrity event planner Mindy Weiss, who’s planned thousands of events over more than three decades—100-plus a year!—including Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan’s wedding, as well as Jimmy Kimmel’s.

Her best advice for brides and grooms who are knee-deep in the planning process? Have fun!

“It can be really daunting amid all of the inspirational wedding resources out there, from Pinterest to magazines, to figure out exactly how to bring your dream wedding to life,” says Mindy, who’s also a Wedding Paper Divas style partner. “But don’t let planning your wedding day overwhelm you, it should be a fun time for the both the bride and groom to-be. I love helping to create the perfect wedding day for couples and being able to provide little nuggets of advice that might make a difference. It’s the best part of my job!”

And her biggest wedding DON’T:

“Not providing any kind of seating during cocktail hour. Cocktail ‘hour’ can sometimes turn into 2 to 2.5 hours. You need some seating for your guests and their tired feet!”

Need some specific-to-you wedding-planning advice? You’re in luck! You have from now through next Monday to post an Instagram a pic with the hashtag #HelpMeWeddingPaperDivas. Mindy and Wedding Paper Divas will pick three couples who will get a video with Mindy’s answers to their pressing questions, a copy of Mindy’s latest wedding-planning book, AND a $750 credit to Wedding Paper Divas. French model Julie Hantson said “I do” to French singer Pascal Obispo over the weekend, and much like Julianne Hough’s engagement ring gave us major deja vu, so did Julie Hanston’s wedding dress.

Holy Grace Kelly vibes, Batman.

Obviously the skirts are different materials, but from the soft updo to the high neckline to the understated veil, there’s no denying the similarities. Julie and Pascal said “I do” at Cap Ferret’s church on Saturday.

Wedding etiquette is hard for lots of grown-ups to grasp: Guests are STILL wearing white to weddings (STOP IT!), brides are still telling their guests they want their gifts in the form of cold, hard cash (Just DON’T!). So it’s understandable that a flower girl who thought her father was going to yell as she walked down aisle would be a little bit stressed out.
