Best Bridesmaid Ever? Anna Kendrick Made Sure Her Bride BFF Felt Like a Movie Star

Forget shopping off the registry: Anna Kendrick gave her childhood friend the red carpet treatment. According Us Weekly, the Pitch Perfect star, who served as maid of honor in her childhood best friend’s Maine wedding on last weekend, “gifted the bride with a full set of diamond jewelry on loan from Harry Kotlar.”

02-anna-kendrick-funny-quotes

“Anna felt bad because she’s been working nonstop and couldn’t be there to do all the traditional duties she wanted to do,” a source told Us of the actress, who wrapped her new flick Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates in Hawaii two days prior. “She just wanted to make her friend feel even more special on her wedding day to make up for it.”

Obviously you wouldn’t want any old guest handing you loaner jewels the day of your wedding, but I would have happily let my maid of honor {Ahem. } pick out diamonds for me—especially diamonds from a fancy-pants jeweler. (And don’t worry, we’re sure Anna gave her friend a gift she didn’t have to return.)

9 Rules for Buying Your Wedding Dress Online

$
0
0

brides-logo

While there's nothing quite like browsing through wedding dresses with your bridesmaids and mother, there's something to be said for the ease, variety and even savings to be found from shopping online. Plus, "it gives the busy bride the opportunity to try everything on in the comfort of her home with her choice of shoes and jewelry and without the pressure of a sales person—something that isn't necessarily a luxury when shopping in a store," says Sarah Rutson, vice president of global buying for Net-A-Porter.

But before you begin browsing, here are expert nine tips to help find your dream dress without leaving home.

computer-search

When it comes to a new wedding dress ...

Know your measurements.
You'll need three—your bust, waist, and hips—to shop for a dress with the right fit. Some websites, such as Net-A-Porter, not only measure the gown but the model, "which makes finding the perfect fit much easier," Rutson says.

Get familiar with fabrics.
In-store, you can run silk through your fingers—but online, you must know just how each fabric will fold and flex. "Certain fabrics stretch while others are much stiffer," says Rutson. "Just know what you're looking for so you're comfortable in your dress."

Know the store's policies.
Would you still buy it if shipping cost as much as the dress? Or take a risk if you weren't allowed to return it? "The last thing you want is to purchase a fabulous gown online only for it to arrive and not be what you expected with no hope of a return," Rutson says.

Read product descriptions thoroughly.
Though quite technical, dress descriptions help you understand exactly what you're buying. "This will give you a clear understanding of what fabrics are being used, how the dress is lined, where the gown is made, and sometimes how it fits," says Rutson. "It's always helpful if there is a video of the model wearing the dress, so scroll through all of the images."

When you're purchasing a second-hand gown ...

Try it on before you buy it.
Whether you buy your used gown from an online retailer or directly from a newlywed who's placed a personal ad, "make sure you have a way to see the dress in person and try it on before you commit fully," explains Ashley Steele, co-founder of Borrowing Magnolia. "You need to inspect the condition and to gauge its fit. You can coordinate a neutral location for an in-person meet up, or scan a site's return policy to insure you won't get stuck if you don't fall in love.

Wrap your mind around wedding-dress sizing.
Unlike purchasing a new dress, whomever is selling a gently used gown may not post its exact measurements. Instead, they'll likely list its size. And "bridal sizing is often totally different than street sizing—the size you would wear in everyday clothing—and can also vary drastically from designer to designer," says Steele. "Before you purchase online, make sure you understand if the size listed is in the bridal size—the size on the tag—or the equivalent street size."

Be prepared to act fast.
"A highly-desired used gown at a great price online is a hot commodity, and lots of brides are looking for the same dresses and designers," Steele says. Love it? Buy it, lest you lose it to another bride! Also, "many sites, including Borrowing Magnolia, will allow you to set up dress alerts for specific gowns designers, sizes, and styles so you'll be notified when a gown you are looking for becomes available" and can react quickly, Steele says.

Jen and Justin, Blake and Ryan, and More Surprise Celebrity Weddings That Made Our Heads Spin

$
0
0

When Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux said “I do” at their Bel Air home last week, no one saw the wedding coming—including their guests, many of whom reportedly thought they were showing up for a birthday party. (No Instagram snaps from the wedding dress boutique dressing room for this celebrity bride.) And while Justin and Jen are the latest A-list couple to make our heads spin by planning their big day with the same level of secrecy as a covert military operation, they’re hardly the first. Here, eight more celebrity couples whose weddings caught us by surprise.

BLAKE LIVELY&RYAN REYNOLDS

Blake and Ryan basically set the bar for shocking celebrity weddings: Remember, we didn’t even know they were engaged when the two took to the red carpet and casually announced their marriage in September of 2012. (Here’s a picture of Blake Lively’s engagement ring—and the reason Ryan Reynolds picked it out without her input.) The two exchanged vows at Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina—where much of The Notebook was filmed—with the bride wearing a custom Marchesa wedding dress. The new parents have been equally hush-hush about their baby daughter, James, so far revealing photos of only her itty-bitty hands and feet.

BEYONCE&JAY Z

Notoriously private, Beyonce and Jay Z have never really acknowledged when they started dating, although all signs point to their “03 Bonnie & Clyde” collaboration. The two quietly (very quietly) married in New York City in April of 2008, and just recently started sharing teeny-tiny peeks into their big day—posting video clips on Instagram and then promptly removing them. What we do know: Beyonce wore a high-impact curve-hugging fit-to-flare gown, and her “something blue” came in the form of blue nail polish. We’ll probably never see a full spread of photos of Bey and Jay’s wedding pictures, of course, but here’s how you can look like Beyonce in your wedding photos.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER& MATTHEW BRODERICK

Perhaps Jen and Justin took a page from SJP’s book: When the Sex an the City actress and the Broadway veteran wed in 1997, their guests had no idea they were showing up for a wedding. The bride chose a black gown for her walk down the aisle—but recently admitted that she wishes she hadn’t: “If I were getting married today, I'd likely wear cream, just to have that bridal experience.”

KERRY WASHINGTON& NNAMDI ASOMUGHA

It seems the Scandal actress took cues from Olivia Pope, pulling a fast one on the media by marrying the San Francisco 49ers star in Idaho in 2013—when most of the world didn’t even realize she had a boyfriend. The fact that there even was a wedding didn’t make it into the press until more then a week later. Well played, Olivia.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY& JAMES RIGHTON

Two ways to make your wedding details stay under-wraps: Keep the guest list small and the details low-key. Keira Knightley did just that, wearing the dress she wore to the 2008 BAFTA Awards when she said “I do” to James Righton in 2013 surrounded by a mere 11 friends and family members. (She’d go on to wear the dress once more on the red carpet before it was ruined with a red-wine spill.)

HILARIA THOMAS & ALEC BALDWIN

The oldest of the Baldwin brothers kept his wedding guests guessing: When he married yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas in 2012 {a year after introducing himself with a kinda lame pickup line } wedding details were reportedly shared with friends and family via text message. The two swapped vows at St. Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York City. The bride was understated sophistication, defined, walking down the aisle in a trumpet Amsale wedding gown, while her groom picked a Tom Ford tux.

MILA KUNIS&ASHTON KUTCHER

The That ’70s Show couple were happy to keep us guessing after their hush-hush engagement, hinting first in January of this year and then in March that they were Mr. and Mrs. In July they hosted an ultra-private wedding at a private California home, although it’s speculated that they married in a civil ceremony months in advance.

ANGELINA JOLIE&BRAD PITT

After nine years together (not to mention, six kids) we figured Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would live out their days Golie-and-Kurt style. (Those two are 32 years and counting—no messing things up with a marriage certificate.) But Brad and Angie went ahead and made things legal last year, marrying in August in France. The bride wore a tank-style Versace wedding dress with her children’s artwork trailing down the back, and all six children played a role in the ceremony. 12 Never-Before-Seen Photos of Charles and Diana’s Royal Wedding Give Us an Intimate Look Behind the Scenes

There’s no forgetting the iconic photos from Charles and Diana’s royal wedding: The miles-long wedding dress train (and a gaggle of flower girls) trailing the prince and his newly minted princess up the aisle. The carriage ride from St. Paul's Cathedral to Buckingham Palace after the bride and groom had exchanged vows. The prince kissing his new wife’s hand on the palace balcony.

But now, more than three decades later, we’re getting a decidedly different perspective of their 1981 nuptials, as a British auction house prepares to take bids on a dozen behind-the-scenes photos from the collection of an assistant to English photographer Patrick Lichfield. In one of the new photos, which will be up for grabs as part of a collection from RR Auction on September 24, Diana carries 5-year-old Clementine Hambro, her youngest bridesmaid. In another, the newlyweds have a sweet exchange with a page boy (the Brit equivalent of a ring bearer) as the Queen watches on. Have a look for yourself.

The Dos and Don'ts of Having a Las Vegas Bachelorette Party

$

When it comes to picking a spot for a bachelorette party, nowhere seems more popular than Las Vegas. Sin City has so much to offer, plus a reputation for hedonistic fun for your last fling before the ring. If you're jetting to the desert for your party, consider these pointers on how to make the most of your time—and avoid embarrassing yourself and friends in a casino-load of people.

las-vegas-showgirls

DO dress to stand out.
"It's always fun to have the bride wear a veil, tiara, or sash. She only gets to experience this weekend once, so why not own it?" said Charissa Davidovici, a longtime Vegas resident who owns the city's staple sweets shop, Sugar Factory. Look for bride/bridesmaid/maid-of-honor tees on Etsy, or go custom with your bachelorette weekend hashtag. (Lauren Conrad’s bridesmaids had a weekend hashtag and custom tattoos, of course.)
DON'T disturb other vacationers.
While it's the bride's big weekend, the best bachelorettes always remember that there are other people around. The worst behavior Davidovici's seen: Girls who are too drunk or loud in restaurants and public places, fighting with each other, or embarking on scavenger hunts that disrupt everyone around them.

DO make reservations.
"Especially on weekends!" insisted Eva Shaw, a featured DJ at Hakkasan Nightclub Las Vegas. If you touch down with a flexible schedule in-hand—whether it's set up by the maid-of-honor or a more organized bridesmaid—the weekend should be hassle-free. Just remember to keep an eye on the clock: Showing up late could wreak havoc on your plans.
DON'T stress about sweet-talking the door guy.
Even if there's a line outside of that club you're dying to go to, relax and don't stress about begging to get in. "Don't try to act too cool to a doorman. He'll let you in as long as you're not obnoxious," Shaw told us. As for getting song requests to the DJ, Shaw says pre-planning is key: "Go see a DJ you like and then you won't have to try and make requests."

DO give venues advance notice.
Vegas is used to seeing bachelorettes and is happy to cater to a special weekend, but for best results, you need to notify them that you're coming. "We loving having bachelorette parties at Sugar Factory!" Davidovici said. "It's best to call way in advance to let them know you're celebrating a bachelorette party and politely ask if it's possible to do something special for the bride. It'll give the business owner some time to prepare and ensure they can take special care of you."
DON'T act entitled.
Conversely, the quickest way to annoy business owners and fellow patrons is to arrive loudly and make a scene. "Anyone rude, overly loud, or dressed sloppy—like they haven't changed from the day's big pool party—probably won't get special attention."

Planning a bachelorette party and want to keep things classy? We've got 5 activities that don't involve anything resembling a penis straw.

Free Wedding Websites—With Matching Stationery—Make Figuring Out Your Wedding Invitations a Breeze

There are approximately 6 billion wedding invitation options out there, 9 million types of save-the-dates, and 42 quadrillion wedding websites to choose from. So how are a bride and groom supposed to pick?

We have two rules:

1) Pick your wedding’s color palette really early on in the planning process. There’s a lot less of everything if you’re ONLY looking at pink-and-gold wedding stationery (or centerpieces, or bridesmaid dresses, etc.).

2) Check out Minted’s brand-new selection of free wedding websites, which you can match to their stationery. We’ve always been a fan of the brand’s designs, but the fact that you can pick one style for your save-the-dates and your thank-you cards—and all the stationery that comes between them, plus, your wedding website—is basically a game-changer. Instead making a decision about every last piece of paper, you can choose once, and call it a (wedding) day.

Unsurprisingly, there are tons (and tons and tons) of options to choose from, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Here are six we like:

1-wedding-websites-0812-courtesy-minted

Chalkboard Floral Wedding Website.

2-wedding-websites-0812-courtesy-minted

Gilt Agate Wedding Website.

3-wedding-websites-0812-courtesy-minted

Once you’ve picked a site design that you love, search for the style name to find the matching stationery. So the Modern Dash Website (directly above) has coordinating stationery that looks like this:

7-wedding-websites-0812-courtesy-minted

Foil-Pressed Modern Dash Wedding Invitations, from $2.23 each.

And the Destination Wedding Website (second from the bottom) has stationery that looks like this. #love

Lauren Conrad got up close and personal with her fans yesterday, tackling 10 of her Instagram followers’ most pressing questions on her site, laurenconrad.com. Almost one year into her marriage with William Tell (the two will celebrate their anniversary September 14), she had some insights into life as a newlywed.

Q. What is your favorite thing about being married? What is the hardest part?

A. My favorite thing about being married is knowing that I have a partner in life that I get to do so many wonderful things with. Dreaming of the things we will do 20 years from now is so fun.

The hardest is compromise. You always want to be considerate of each other. It’s not just about you anymore.

Why This High-End Jeweler Wears a Hexagon-Shaped Engagement Ring—and Why You’re Going to Want One, Too

London-based jewelry designer Noor Fares has always been attuned to shapes, signs, and symbolism. She called her first collection Touch Wood, based on the Middle Eastern tradition of knocking on wood for luck. (She’s Lebanese.) And many of her pieces incorporate an engraved evil eye, a symbol of protection in Middle Eastern culture.

So it’s no surprise that Noor’s engagement ring, which she posted a picture of earlier today—along with her fairly new wedding ring—is steeped with meaning. Here’s today’s photo:

A photo posted by Noor Fares (@noorfares) on

And here’s an older photo—where she’s wearing another six-sided ring:

A photo posted by Noor Fares (@noorfares) on

In this one she explains:

“It is believed that Hexagons represent union and balance #nofilter #SacredGeometry #numerology”

Makes sense: Union and balance are two of the most important elements you want in a marriage.

There’s also this shot, where she shows off a second wedding band—part of her collection—that hugs her hex engagement ring.

We can’t help but think it would be pretty with a second band just like it stacked over her engagement ring, which would look a lot like Natalie Portman’s incredibly cool stack.

Diamonds cut into a hexagon shape are pretty rare—a lot more rare than your standard round- or princess-cut—though they are out there if you do some digging.

Pardon Us, Lady Gaga: Is THIS Your Wedding Dress Designer?

Lady Gaga cut a striking figure at a Hollywood Foreign Press Association event last night. She looked so drop-dead chic in her off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood sheath, that we had to wonder if she’ll be the designer Mama Monster wears down the aisle when she ties the knot with Taylor Kinney. (The two were engaged on Valentine’s Day of this year. Here’s what Lady Gaga’s engagement ring looks like, if you need a reminder.)

Gaga has said in the past that her wedding dress will be “totally for Taylor,” and we guessed her gown would skew more traditional than, say, a wedding dress made of cold cuts. (Here are 10 wedding dresses we could TOTALLY see on Lady Gaga.) Vivienne Westwood seems like the perfect fit, with ultra-feminine silhouettes that fit like a dream (see above) and designs with a bit of edge that aren’t too “out there.” Here are four Vivienne Westwood wedding dresses we can see Gaga wearing down the aisle.

Why Your Dad Might Act Weird Before the Wedding

brides-logo

Weddings are rough on our dear old dads. Not only do dads traditionally foot the bill, but they also pay, emotionally. For every dad, a daughter's wedding day is a bittersweet day.

Rationally, your dad's thrilled about your wedding. He's happy you've found the right guy, and he's excited about the prospect of grandchildren. Emotionally, however, he may be reeling. And he may not even know it.

flowes

It's normal for dad to feel sad he's losing you — hypothetically speaking. Your wedding makes him feel his age. Think about it: You were once that tiny baby girl he held in his arm, and now he's holding your arm as you walk down the aisle to get married. The wedding makes him come to terms with his own age and how he's grown older, too.

Many men aren't all that great at feeling their feelings. Especially dads, who are socialized to be "The Rock" of the family. So dads may misbehave, act up, act out, and sometimes act downright weird. I've heard stories of dads glued to their iPhones when their daughters are up on the pedestal at the bridal shops. Generous dads who suddenly become tightwads, watching every penny spent on the wedding. Warm and fuzzy dads become distant, even a little mean.

See more: What the Father of the Bride Can Expect When His Daughter is Getting Ready to Say "I Do"

What can you do if this sounds like your old man? Talk with him about your feelings. Maybe he'll open up — or maybe not. Either way, don't get offended or upset. On some level, he's dreaded your wedding day since the day you were born. Brides must be patient with fathers as they get used to their new position as the #2 man in your life.

The Creepy Reason “Secret” Celebrity Weddings Might Soon Be a Thing of the Past

$

A-listers tying the knot in secret is nothing new. Jen and Justin pulled off under-the-radar nuptials almost two weeks ago, Blake and Ryan did it back in 2012—and these seven celebrity couples also tied the knot without a media frenzy in the lead-up.

jennifer-aniston-justin-theroux-wedding-pictures-0807-getty

It’s no surprise that fans want all the details of celebs’ big days: With 24/7 coverage of A-listers’ (and B-listers’, and Z-listers’) breakups, makeups, breakouts, and baby bumps, the public basically feels like they should be allowed to stand altar-side while their favorite TV, movie, music, and reality stars swap vows. Part of the expectation, of course, comes from the celebs who do take fans for the ride, showing off their engagement rings on Instagram, or parading in front of the paparazzi on their way to the chapel.

And still there are celebs who still desperately want to keep the most intimate of days—their wedding—private. So while the average bride is worried about her bitchy cousin posting a blurry double-chin wedding photo on Facebook, the celebrity bride is worried about paparazzi with long-range photo lenses (or a sneaky member of the catering staff) selling those same photos to TMZ.

Top event planners—including Marcy Blum (who planned, among others LeBron James’ ultra-private wedding, where the wedding invitations didn't include a venue or a time)—shared with The New York Times this weekend their tips for keeping celebrity weddings under wraps: Opt for a remote location, and keep the party indoors. Keep your guest list short. Ask people to turn over their phones.

But, thanks to technology, even the best planners in the business might not be able to guarantee absolute privacy. Because the paparazzi are now bringing in the drones.

“Really only in the last year, these magazines are buying drones,” JoAnn Gregoli, an owner of Elegant Occasions in New York told the Times. “They are able to launch them, hover them low. You could drop a drone outfitted with video cameras into a property almost undetected. At one event I did recently in the Hamptons, one came in over the water. There is no way we could have stopped it. They are a lot more annoying than helicopters ever were. Before, with a helicopter, you had a TV crew on board, and you’d have to wait for the show to air. Now with drones, they can put it on YouTube, on Periscope, on Twitter, almost in real time. To the world of celebrities, that is horrible. What do you do: Shoot them down?”

Is anyone else entirely freaked out? As much as we’d love a peek and Jen’s wedding dress, at what point do we just say, “Leave the poor bride alone”? Or are we already past that point?

23 Things You’re Going to Forget on Your Wedding Day

$

Your wedding day is going to be one of the most highly orchestrated days of your life. From your hair to your heels to your underwear, you’ll likely have a plan in place for every last little detail. That said, some of the littlest (but still important!) things are bound to fall through the cracks—unless, of course, you have a printout of this list handy to help you keep tabs on the easy-to-forget. Here are 23 things that often get forgotten until the moment you say, “Has anyone seen my ________?”

wedding-planning-tips-0817-stocksy

  • wedding binder, if it has any contracts in it—or vendor contact info that’s not stored in your phone
  • undergarments Yes, you can walk down the aisle without any of them (unless your dress is totally sheer) but you’ll be happier if you’re wearing your specially selected somethings instead of the random red cotton thong you threw on for your hair appointment.
  • something old, something new, something borrowed something blue
  • makeup bag, for touch-ups
  • deodorant
  • bridesmaid and groomsmen gifts, if you haven’t handed them out already
  • bathroom baskets, if you’re responsible for assembling them
  • lint brush, for right before you walk down the aisle
  • ceremony accessories (unity candle (and matches or a lighter!), or, for a jewish wedding, ketubah and a glass to break)
  • flower girl’s basket and ring bearer’s pillow
  • wedding rings!
  • custom signs you’ve had made
  • vows!
  • marriage license for your officiant to sign Don’t forget to get yours ahead of your wedding. (In most states you need to wait at least 24 hours between getting the license and the ceremony, so plan accordingly.)
  • cable, if you’ll need to connect a phone or iPod to speakers for music at any point
  • basket (or birdcage or whatever) for guests to leave their cards in
  • cake-cutting knife and cake server Do you need fancy-pants utensils to cut your cake? Of course not. Your venue will have a generic set on hand in a pinch. But if someone gifted you with a special set, you’ll appreciate having them on-hand. (When else are you going to ceremoniously cut cake, after all?)
  • gifts Not something to pack ahead, of course, but assuming some of your guests come with gift (or card) in hand, you’re going to need to get them out of there—preferably that night, to prevent loss or theft. If you’re planning to make a grand exit as husband and wife and don’t want gifts weighing you down, assign the job of gift-relocation to a parent.
  • wedding “souvenirs” You don’t pack these ahead of time, either, but you’ll want to make sure to grab them as your big day unfolds: Part of your bouquet, whether it’s a ribbon or a rose that will dry perfectly; a program and table number; any other sweet, sentimental details that you can hold onto for memory’s sake.
  • after-party outfit If your wedding dress is heavy, you might appreciate having a second set of clothes as the evening winds down.
  • pajamas
  • bag to put your wedding dress in the next day Especially if you get ready at home (or wherever) but plan to spend the night post-wedding in a hotel
  • shoes for the next day If you’re having a morning-after brunch, you probably have a dress all picked out. Don’t forget shoes, or you’ll barefoot or {potential “ouch” factor } back in your wedding shoes.

It seems wedding rings aren’t en vogue among the most stylish married celebs. We just noticed two recently married tastemakers have joined Hollywood’s “No Wedding Ring for Me, Thanks” Club.

First up, Olivia Palermo, who said “I do” to Johannes Huebl last June. She almost always wears her engagement ring, starring a massive yellow diamond, but we have yet to see her pair it with wedding band.

And then there’s Solange, who married longtime boyfriend Alan Ferguson last November. She has an array of bling that she wears on THAT finger, but nothing that looks like a wedding band.

Other members of the club include

Viola Davis

and Kim Kardashian West.

Of course some of these rings are so massive {Ahem, Mrs. West } that fitting another ring on the same finger might not work. But for others it seems like one ring is exactly enough—no additional jewelry required.

The honeymoon’s over! Jennifer Aniston was back in Los Angeles last night to promote She's Funny That Way, in which she appears alongside Owen Wilson. The actress didn’t bring new husband Justin Theroux on the red carpet—but she did bring her brand-new wedding ring. (The two were married at home earlier this month, if you’re just getting out of a coma.) Check it out.

It appears to be a single ring that gives the appearance of three, with a thick gold border on either side, and a row of diamonds down the middle. She left her massive engagement ring at home for the evening. (Here’s a picture of Jennifer Aniston’s engagement ring, if you need a reminder.)

Royal Wedding #tbt: How Queen Elizabeth’s Real-Life Wedding Compares to the Made-for-TV Version That’s Filming Now

It’s no secret that we’re obsessed with modern-day princesses*, but today we have our eye on an old-school royal: Queen Elizabeth, who’s back in the spotlight as Netflix films its original drama The Crown. The actors took to the streets of London yesterday (including Claire Foy as a princess bride Elizabeth) to shoot the wedding, which originally took place on November 20, 1947. Here are the behind-the-scenes pics:

Claire donned a double strand of pearls and a replica of Elizabeth’s Norman Hartnell wedding gown. Here’s how she stacked up against the real royal deal.

Here’s Princess Elizabeth, nailing that whole “blushing bride” bit. Her duchesse satin wedding dress was embroidered with jasmine and lilac blossoms embellished with crystals and more than 10,000 seed pearls.

Here are the bride and groom directly following their nuptials at Westminster Abbey.

And doing our favorite royal wedding pose: Waving to crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Like Diana and Prince Charles almost half a century later, Princess Elizabeth and Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, were followed up the aisle by a gaggle of white-clad attendants. (And also an impressive train: Elizabeth’s was 13 feet long compared to Kate Middleton’s 9-foot train. But Diana’s dress bested them both, trailing a 25-foot train behind it.)

How to Help Parents Settle the Bill When They Keep Fighting Over Wedding Costs

Finance is never an easy topic, especially when the expenditure in question is a 200-person wedding with a budget-busting cake and five-star venue. Traditionally, wedding expenses are split between the families of the bride and groom, and the bride's side conventionally shoulders the brunt of the bill. However, mounting costs can yield increased animosity between two families who wish to avoid being saddled with unnecessary expenses. So how can a modern couple resolve finance-related fighting between two sets of feuding parents? Our etiquette experts weigh in on the art of compromise as it pertains to wedding costs.

To begin with, both sets of parents must determine if they wish to split the wedding costs according to a traditional breakdown, equally divide the total cost between both families, or determine a customized distribution of costs. While dividing the bill equally and adhering to nuptial tradition are the simplest solutions, one or both families might balk at the bottom line due to their financial situation. If a customized bill breakdown is the only feasible option, the best way to begin resolving the issue is by arranging a meeting with both sets of parents. Whether the friction has occurred from a misunderstanding over budget or a family's inability to pay their part, the underlying problems must be addressed.

Prior to the meeting, both families should calculate a maximum budget they feel comfortable paying for the wedding. The number should take into account all wedding-related bills. Alternatively, each family can create a list of wedding-related costs divided into sections for expenditures they are willing to pay, expenditures they might take or split if necessary, and expenditures they will not pay. After preparing for the meeting, the two families will be able to calmly and rationally discuss the wedding costs without confusion or anger entering into the equation, and hopefully alight on a solution that works for both parties.
