Pop Quiz: 10 Questions Your Wedding Photographer Must Be Able to Answer

$
0
0

If you hire a bad wedding caterer, your guests will eventually forget the rubber chicken. Hire a bad wedding DJ and you’ll be dancing to “YMCA” for a miserable three minutes and 45 seconds. But if you hire a bad wedding photographer, you’re stuck with bad wedding pictures for life—so you need to do your research. Here are 10 questions you must ask, courtesy of the Professional Photographers of America.

questions-to-ask-wedding-photographers-0310-getty

Question 11: Are you going to ask me to take stupid jumping photos?

1. Do you have a gallery of wedding images I can review?
You’ll get an idea of what she’s capable of—both on your big day, and after. (Even if you don’t want a ton of after-the-fact editing, she should be capable of, say, removing blemishes.) If you’re talking to a photographer who doesn’t have a portfolio, run—quickly. And if the photos seem inconsistent, ask for contact info from previous clients; it’s rare, but I’ve heard of wannabe photogs stealing other people’s pics to make phony portfolios. Yikes.

2. What’s your working style?
Will you be asking us to stop and pose? Or can we do our thing while you watch the day unfold from behind the camera? Make sure his style is compatible with the results you want. (If you want a lot of posed pictures, you don’t want a photographer who prefers to act behind the scenes.)

3. Is an engagement session included?
We didn’t do an engagement session, but they truly are a great way to get comfortable with your photographer and how she works. If you’d like one, find out ahead of time if it’ll cost extra.

4. Will you work with us to create a detailed shot list?
Every photographer should have a standard list—bride parents, groom with parents, etc. He should also be willing to have a sit-down email to discuss what else is important to you, whether it’s snaps of your grandparents or boudoir photos.

5. What kind of lighting will be used?
Is your photographer going to bring in professional equipment? How will its setup affect you. If you’re uncomfortable with a constant flash, can she work without one?

6. Do you have have backup equipment?
Think of it as a “rain plan” for your wedding pictures: Your photographer should have backup cameras, lenses, flashes, additional lighting equipment, extra memory cards, and batteries.

7. Do you have have liability insurance?
Your reception venue may ask the photographer to submit a certificate of liability ahead of time.

8. Will there be one photographer or two?
There’s a better chance every moment will be captured if your photographer works with an assistant, which is pretty common, especially during the getting-ready time. If there will be additional people, ask to meet them ahead of time.

9. What will happen to the images after our wedding?
Will your images be backed up to a hard drive or the Cloud once they’re processed? How long will your photographer keep the images afterward? Will they be kept for a couple of years or dumped immediately?

10. When will we get our photos?
Lots of brides are surprised with how long it takes to get wedding photos, but your photographer needs to edit down the selection—she’ll likely shoot thousands—and touch up the photos so they’re picture perfect. If you’d like a few sneak peek photos for social media ahead of time, ask her how quickly she can get you one or two.

Have you hired a wedding photographer yet? Do you have any concerns?

So Sweet! Courteney Cox’s Daughter Coco Has a Special Role in Her Wedding

When Courteney Cox marries Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, her daughter, Coco, will do more than wear a pretty dress: Us Weekly is reporting that the 10-year-old is taking singing lessons and is planning to “put on a little show” at the big event.

“She’s inspired by Johnny and will perform at the wedding,” which is reportedly happening in Ireland. Courteney told Us: “She spends so much time thinking about the wedding, I’m letting it be her thing!”

Coco was involved in the proposal too. Courteney told Jimmy Kimmel in September that Johnny pulled Coco aside to ask for permission to marry her mom. “He gave her a little diamond ring and got on his knee. And she said, ‘Great! I’m going to camp tomorrow. Let’s do it right now!’”

It’s all just too sweet for words—and I love that her groom’s embracing her daughter.

Thoughts on Coco’s wedding performance? Would you let kids perform at your wedding?

Come See Blake Lively as a Blushing Vintage Bride

It's fair to say we're all excited for Blake Lively's return to the big screen with Age of Adaline (she stars as a woman passing through multiple decades). As part of the flick, she gets hitched, and this image, one of nine Adaline "Through the Ages" character posters shared exclusively with us, is so much the perfect picture of a classic blushing bride that it's good inspiration for any modern-day lady.

blake-lively-age-Adaline-wedding-dress

To create the 1931 bridal look, the movie's director, Lee Toland Krieger, drew on Blake's timeless beauty. "It's delicate yet statuesque. This is Adaline's only marriage, and it precedes the accident that renders her ageless. It was important for her to look less affected, happy, open, and unfettered by the secret that will haunt her in the years that follow."

Makeup artist Monica Huppert said the team found inspiration from famous icons of the various eras, but it was important that this look felt realistic, not like stage makeup. "We had to make her a real person."

Those rosy cheeks! That stained lip! I think this would look absolutely breathtaking on a bride right now, don't you?

2 Tiara-ish Wedding Headpieces That Are Royally Pretty Without Looking Like Crazy Crowns

$

Look, I get the desire to rock a tiara on your wedding day. You’re wearing a red-carpet-worthy dress, your face and hair have been prepped by pros. It’s all enough to make you feel like a princess, so throwing on a tiara is the next logical step, no?

That said, it’s easy to stumble into “bananas” territory in a tiara if you’re not, in fact, a princess. I think the key for non-royal brides to pull off a mega headpiece is to choose something that lies flat instead of sticking up, like a crown. Here are two perfect examples from Maria Elena Headpieces, an Aussie brand that ships worldwide:

That one reminds me of Lady Mary’s wedding tiara from Downton Abbey. And I like how both of these work with and without a veil, so you’re good for the reception too.

Both brides are bringing it in the bling department, but neither would be confused for Queen Elizabeth. Or Kate Middleton. Or anyone with access to the crown jewels.

Thoughts on these wedding headpieces? Which would you pick for your wedding day?

I went majorly low-key with my wedding hair. I kind of wish I had picked something a little more interesting.

An Invitation to Cinderella’s Wedding—and Five More Invites Inspired by Your Favorite Disney Princesses

With Cinderella headed to the big screen tomorrow, our friends at Wedding Paper Divas couldn’t help but wonder what Cinderella’s wedding invitation might look like—or Ariel’s, Snow White’s, and the rest of the gang’s. Here are six of Disney’s most popular princesses, and “invites” to their nuptials.

CINDERELLA
4-disney-princess-wedding-invitations-0311

Lavishly Elegant by Elum for Wedding Paper Divas, from $1.54 each. This classically elegant design is perfect for Cinderella and Prince Charming’s royal affair. And doesn’t the pattern bear a striking resemblance to Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage?

JASMINE
5-disney-princess-wedding-invitations-0311

Detailed Ornament by Jenny Romanski for Wedding Paper Divas, from $1.54. Princess Jasmine and Aladdin’s wedding would most certainly be ornate. The shapes and patterns mimic the architecture of the Sultan’s royal palace—which is of course where the wedding would take place.

AURORA
2-disney-princess-wedding-invitations-0311

At Last by Jenny Romanski for Wedding Paper Divas, from $1.84 each. When we think of Princess Aurora, we think pink. This gorgeous shade—with touches of opulent gold foil—is truly fit for a princess.

BELLE
3-disney-princess-wedding-invitations-0311

Long Overdue by Jenny Romanski for Wedding Paper Divas, from $1.94 each. Belle wasn’t born into royalty, so her wedding would likely be more humble—a simple but romantic event. Since her nose is always in a book, Belle would be drawn to this storybook format that tells the tale of her and the Beast’s love story.

SNOW WHITE
6-disney-princess-wedding-invitations-0311

Floral Trellis by Mindy Weiss for Wedding Paper Divas, from $1.54 each. Snow White would lean toward cheerful florals in her wedding stationery, and the palette is obvious: deep blue gold, and red—with touches of snow white.

ARIEL
1-disney-princess-wedding-invitations-0311

Exquisite Endearment by Stacey Day for Wedding Paper Divas, from $2.84 each. True to her roots, Ariel needs a wedding invitation that incorporates elements of the sea, like those in this luxurious but beachy letterpress design.

Which princess got the best wedding invitation? And would you copy any for your wedding?

Two New Makeup Tools That Give You the Prettiest Wedding Glow

wedding-glowy-skin

I'm pretty sure if you get married with colorless, washed-out cheeks, the whole thing doesn't count—such is the importance of that fabled wedding "glow". If you're still looking for a foolproof way to get your skin wedding-worthy radiance, here's a quick, easy method we just got from makeup artist Rea Ann Silva, creator of the Beauty Blender—that pink teardrop-shaped sponge that many pros swear by.

1. Prep your skin with a good moisturizer to ensure the most seamless makeup blending. Silva's favorite: La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Cream.

2. After applying your base makeup, use a creamy, luminous blush stick to add flush and subtle highlighting atop your cheeks. Silva recommends Vincent Longo's new Chiara Flush Stick, which incorporates a ring of color around an inner core of shimmer.

3. Blend the blush into total believability using a sponge, like the new Beauty Blender Micro Mini sponge, which is sized and shaped perfectly for foolproof cheek contouring. Be sure to wet and squeeze it first!

Do you know what blush and blending technique you'll use on your wedding day? Would you try one of these new makeup tools?

Here Are Cinderella’s Glass Slippers—and a Look-Alike Pair Brides Can Wear to Marry Their Prince Charming

Sure, Cinderella and her glass slippers have been around for, like, 100 years, but her latest pair of glass pumps—from the live-action Cinderella, in theaters today—look like the handiwork of one of my favorite current day shoe designers.

Here’s the movie version:

And here’s one with Grumpy Cat, because obviously his life is way more glamorous than mine:

And here are two remarkably similar pairs from Brit designer Aruna Seth:

2-cinderella-movie-glass-slippers-lily-james-0313-courtesy

Pointy-Toe Crystal Butterfly Pumps. Farfalla 110mm Heels in Ivory Tulle Lace.

Fellow shoe-obsessives might remember that Nikki Reed wore the open-toe, non-lace version of the shoes the first time she walked down the aisle, and Pippa Middleton wore butterfly-topped Aruna Seth sandals (with that green dress) to the royal wedding reception.

Thoughts on Cinderella’s glass slippers? And would you wear butterfly shoes as a bride?

I SO would have, in gray suede.

Guys, did you know Glamour just launched a podcast? Well, I did, but I didn’t get a chance to listen to it until yesterday—when I binge-listened to all five episodes. What I Wore When… features the poignant stories behind the outfits designers and Glamour editors wore during pivotal life moments. All the stories are awesome, but there’s one bit for brides in the midst of the wedding-planning frenzy—from designer Cynthia Rowley’s episode about her wedding day—that I have to share.

“It’s not what’s on the tables, it’s what’s in the chairs.”

I mean, YES. Just y-e-s.

As someone who’s planned a wedding and someone who still gets genuinely excited about reception tables, I know it’s easy to get wrapped up in napkins and place cards and hanging tent decorations when you’re wedding planning. (It’s stage six, OBSESSION, in the nine stages of wedding planning.) But let’s all try to remember that it’s not the things that make your wedding amazing—it’s the people. Annnnnd… exhale.

7 Personal Touches to Make a Big Wedding Feel Intimate

Just because you're throwing a 300-person ballroom wedding doesn't mean you're celebration shouldn't feel intimate. Here are seven ways to personalize your big day—no matter the theme, style, or guest count.

1. Personalize Your Musical Notes
Event designer James Abel suggests that personalizing your nuptials may be as simple as honoring your loved ones with meaningful details that recall important milestones in their respective relationships. Abel recommends incorporating the song your parents first danced to as a married couple into your reception playlist for a sentimental surprise.

2. Incorporate a Vintage Touch
Instead of investing in an assortment of impersonal rental furniture, event planner Marina Luri advises brides to include heirloom items as well. "Add family owned items to the décor. For example, a vintage chandelier or family china and mix it in with your rentals," Luri explains. Melding meaningful, vintage items with your other décor will add a more hospitable air to your celebration.

3. Create a Lounge
As lovely as a long table lit with candles and crystal may be, guests will feel more at home with more relaxed seating arrangements scattered throughout your reception location. Luri likes cozy spaces where guests can retreat, urging brides, "Create smaller seated spaces within the venue where people can casually sit and have a conversation and share a drink. For example, lounge seating and side tables."

4. Customize Table Settings and Escort Cards
Nothing reminds guests how much you appreciate their presence like customized table settings and escort cards. One of Luri's favorite ideas is to include photos of each invitee on cards to make guests feel valued.

5. Double Up on Your Wait Staff
Lauren Sozmen of Loli Events suggests hiring more waiters than seems necessary to increase the intimacy of an event. Nothing is more familial than feeling doted-upon, and a full wait staff will improve the experience for your loved ones.

6. Blend In Games and Trivia
Viva Max Kaley of Viva Max events encourages brides to lighten the mood and kick off the festivities with games and personalized trivia. Says Kaley, “One time my couple wrote the story of how they met, one version from the bride and one version from the groom, and we printed the two stories and set them on the tables. It felt personal and brought the guests closer to the couple.”

7. Incorporate Soft Lighting With Candles
When in doubt, bring the lighting of your venue down with well-placed candles. Wedding planner José Rolon suggests that an atmospheric and welcoming addition to any reception venue is an array of flickering candles. Florescent or garish overhead lighting is jarring, but Rolon explains that candles are just the opposite, noting, "You can never have too many! Walking into a space with lit candles for dinner or the reception will have your guests feeling as if they just walked into something intimate.”

ASOS Is Adding Budget-Friendly Bridesmaid Dresses to the Mix!

Ladies looking for another option for more affordable bridesmaid dresses have a new spot to shop: ASOS! The British mega brand has just expanded its occasion wear section, and tucked in among the cocktail frocks and party dresses are styles created with bridesmaids in mind.

asos-launches-bridesmaid-dresses

The site's huge in the UK (when I was in London last, working on this story, girls told me that most everyone owns something from ASOS). There's a ton of merchandise online, and while I obsessively browsed it while searching for my own bridesmaids dresses, the addition of pieces called out as options for 'maids should make the quest easier. The dresses, organized as multiple silhouettes in the same color or pattern, will join the site on Sunday. For now, check out the rest of the party dresses here.

asos-bridesmaid-dresses

I'm happy to report other new brands have popped up recently with more budget-friendly options, even if it's as simple as packaging a collection of dresses with nuptials in mind. ModCloth has a ton under $100 and Ann Taylor's offerings mostly range between $150 and $300.

Where'd you shop for bridesmaid dresses? Have you ever had to pay for a pricey style for a friend's wedding?

There Was an Insanely Pretty Wedding Last Night, and James Van Der Beek Was There

When Petra sent me a photo of this wedding venue last night, I just HAD to know more. The pinks! The grays! The greenery on the balloons!

Thanks to the wedding’s hashtag, #caleandjoan, I found loads more eye candy. The bride is the incredibly lovely Joan Cusack of Design Love Fest. For the rehearsal dinner, she wore a vintage wedding dress fashioned into a skirt:

Robert Pattinson’s Girlfriend, FKA Twigs, Just Stepped Out With Her Alleged Promise Ring

Robert Pattinson allegedly put a ring on it—a promise ring, anyway. People reported earlier this month that the Twilight star and his girlfriend, FKA Twigs, are BOTH wearing promise rings.

“They are inseparable… They live at his house. He wants to marry her,” People’s source said, describing his pal as “much more calm and happy than before.”

But neither of them has been spotted since the promise ring news broke—until last night, when Twigs {Should I call you Twigs? FKA? } stepped out for the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty Benefit Dinner at the V&A Museum. And, yes, there’s ring on that finger.

1-robert-pattinson-engaged-fka-twigs-rings-celebrity-weddings-0315-rex

Shall we go in for a closer look?

2-robert-pattinson-engaged-fka-twigs-rings-celebrity-weddings-0315-rex

I mean, there’s definitely a ring. I’m not sure if anything makes it particularly promise-y, other than the finger it’s on. It looks like a plain gold band, which certainly could be a promise ring. But the idea of a promise ring feels a little, I don’t know, young; he’s 28, she’s 27, so they’re certainly old enough to get engaged for real. That said, their relationship is pretty young—dating reports first surfaced last September—so I don’t think waiting, say, a full year to get for-real engaged would be the worst idea.

Thoughts on Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs and their promise rings? Do you think they’re actually promise rings? Or are people (and People) just getting worked up about an unremarkable accessory? And what do you think of promise rings in general?

How to Turn Your Wedding Reception Into a Super-Fun Dance Party, Guaranteed

$
0
0

I think a good indicator of whether or not a wedding is fun is the number of guests on the dance floor. People who are dancing are generally having fun, so the more people who are dropping it like it’s hot, the more fun your wedding is, right?

The bad news is, having a kick-ass band or the best-in-the-biz DJ won’t guarantee your wedding guests will hit the dance floor—especially if they’ve wandered away.

A lot of the times when you’re checking out wedding venues, the person giving the tour will show you a bar in an out-of-the-way rotunda, a lounge for guests who want a break, or a terrace where you can leave a selection of desserts. The problem is, whenever your guests stray to one of these “bonus” spaces, they’re not on the dance floor. And if you give your guests an opportunity to escape, they will.

To keep your wedding guests together—and, hopefully, dancing—look for a reception space that restricts how far they can wander. Ideally, your entire reception (minus bathroom breaks) should be contained within four walls to get the maximum number of guests dancing.

Do you want your wedding to be a dance party? Have you ever been at a wedding with “bonus” spaces?

If you give me a separate place to wander off to, I definitely will. But if there’s nowhere to go, I’ll be on the dance floor.

Did Usher Propose With a Giant Engagement Ring? YEAH! Here It Is

When Usherproposed to Grace Miguel, his longtime girlfriend and business partner, earlier this year, sources called her engagement ring“giant.” One outlet reported “you wouldn’t think it was an engagement ring because it’s so big.” Now that we’re getting a good, up-close look, I have to agree.

Here are Grace and Usher out shopping in Munich earlier this month.

1-usher-engagement-ring-grace-miguel-0317-splash

And here’s her hand a few weeks prior.

2-usher-engagement-ring-grace-miguel-0317-splash

It’s hard to tell much of anything about the design, but the center stone appears to take up the bottom third of her finger. Hot damn. It looks like the stone is pretty flush against her finger, so there’s a good chance it’s a rose-cut diamond, like Jennifer Aniston’s.

Would you be able to wear a massive engagement ring every day? Or would you HAVE to ditch it in favor of something smaller?

I feel like it must get so heavy on her hand!

If You’re Going to Do the Promise Ring Thing, Like Robert Pattinson, Here’s a Super-Chic One

The whole promise-ring thing doesn’t seem big in the Northeast, at least among my friends, but when I started checking out promise rings yesterday—after I spotted Robert Pattinson’s girlfriend, FKA Twigs, wearing her alleged promise ring—I found tons and tons, so they must be big somewhere.

For the most part, the options I saw just SO weren’t my style, with lots of curlicues, super-dainty diamonds, and his-and-her birthstones. But I did find one that I adore:

2-robert-pattinson-fka-twigs-engaged-promise-ring-pictures-0317-getty

The Promise 18 from De Beers, $2,500.

I know this is probably majorly expensive for most of the promise ring set. (A majority of the promise rings I saw were below the $1,000 mark.) But it’s so chic, I think it would totally work as an engagement ring. I adore how the masculine/feminine bands are sort of intertwined, and how the diamond is precisely the width of the two bands. I’m also really digging the yellow gold. A++.

Did any of your friends get promise rings? Did you? Thoughts on this sparkler?

Since there are sort of two bands, I’d love to have it for travel (so I could leave my actual rings at home) as a wedding-set stand-in.

LOCKET
I think sentiment of lockets is sweet—your loved one is close to your heart—and this one’s pretty awesome. (Obviously you don’t need to spend this much on a locket, but it’s too lovely not to share.)

Ziegfeld Collection Daisy Locket and Chain, Tiffany & Co., $895.

To be clear, I don’t think you should fill your house with all custom photo decor, all the time. I just think having one or two of these is a cute alternative to, say, a ginormous wedding photo wall.

Will you frame a bunch of your wedding photos? Or do something else with ’em?

Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I feel weird being surrounded by a bunch of photos of myself.
