The Secret to Hiring a Wedding Planner Who Won’t Destroy Your Wedding Budget

0
0

We didn’t hire a wedding planner simply because my mother’s brand of “type A” makes Tracy Flick look like a slacker. But if you don’t have an Excel-sheet-wielding mother ready to review your vendor contracts and research every bridal boutique within a 135-mile radius, I highly recommend hiring one. Especially if you have a job.

how-to-choose-a-wedding-planner-0209-digital-archive

But don’t start interviewing candidates until you get to my secret:

Hire someone who’s used to working below your wedding budget. If your budget is $10,000 and your planner is used to turning out $8,000 weddings, she’ll be able to do more with $10,000 than someone who’s used to planning $20,000 weddings is frustrated the whole time and trying to cut corners.

Better to be an inexpensive planner’s most expensive wedding than an expensive planner’s least-expensive one, if that makes sense.

Are you hiring a wedding planner? Or, already-married girls, do you wish you had?

Pick a Favorite: Beyonce Basically Wore 7 Engagement Rings to the Grammys—Or, 150 Carats on Her Hands

If I could get away with wearing seven engagement rings—including two on a single finger—every day, I 100 percent would. Sadly, I would look ridiculous wearing seven rings, in part because I type for a living. But Beyonce can certainly pull it off. Especially at the Grammys, where she had 150 carats in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds and emeralds on five fingers—and that’s not including her 18-carat diamond engagement ring on a sixth finger. Her $10 million in jewels also included earrings featuring 80 more carats of emeralds and diamonds. Behold:

1-beyonce-rings-grammy-awards-0209

On her left hand that’s her regular engagement ring, a marquis-shaped diamond on her middle finger, and I think two rings—one diamond, one emerald—one her pointer finger. (Here’s another angle of that hand. And another.) Over on her right hand, OK, I don’t think the back-to-back pear-shaped diamonds would work as an engagement ring, but the emerald on her middle finger definitely would (looks like it has a pave band), and the emerald ring on her ring finger might be engagement-y too.

Let’s go in for a closer look:

And here’s a better look at her right hand:

I asked for ring photos from the Lorraine Schwartz’ people. If they’re able to get them to me, I’ll update the post.

Thoughts on Beyonce’s ring collection? Would you wear any of these rings as an engagement ring? How ’bout all of them at once?

This Is Not a Drill: John Legend Wants to Perform at Your Wedding for $10

0
0

I think the entire Internet collectively went “Awwwww!” when we learned that John Legend sang “All of Me” to bride Chrissy Teigen at their September 2013 wedding. And now he wants to sing it at YOUR wedding—for just $10.

Here are photos of all three of Chrissy Teigen’s wedding dresses.

Here’s the deal: John’s raising $$$ for his charity, the Show Me Campaign, which supports education in underserved communities around the globe. To encourage people to give, he’s asking for donations—as low as $10. Donors will be entered in a raffle, and the winner gets a live performance by John Legend at the private event of her choice. (!!!) Obviously this would be INSANE for a wedding—but he’ll also perform at your birthday party, backyard barbecue, whatever, if you’re not planning a trip down the aisle.

Let John tell you more about it here:

And click here to give. Like, NOW. $10. John Legend! It’s a no-brainer.

Would you just die if you won?

I’m so entering. Take that, preschool birthday party circuit. Yeah, we had a bouncy house in our backyard. And John Freakin’ Legend.

Hold Your Credit Cards, Ladies: Your Dream Engagement Ring Is Now Just a Click Away

Did I say “your” dream engagement ring? I meant mine. (But probably yours too.) I’ve been raving about Single Stoneengagement rings for ages, but the jewelry company's site was **cough** a little antiquated until, like, three days ago, so you could browse all you want with out “accidentally” adding engagement rings to your cart. But Single Stone just updated its site, and the danger is real, friends. Check out some of the prettiness that could very easy wind up on your credit card—or your boyfriend’s, if you’re Blair Waldorf-style sneaky.

The Utterly Original Decorating Idea That All the 2015 (and 2016 and 2017) Brides Are Going to Copycat

0
0

Washi tape flower walls have been popping up my Instagram feed for ages, but last night at a Loverly event (more on that tomorrow) was the first time I spied on in person.

It’s such a sweet, easy idea—literally fresh blooms with super-short stems stuck to a wall at random with colorful tape. It’s a great way to make a big impact on a blank wall (maybe behind a dessert buffet or escort cards, or as a backdrop in a photo station) without a ton of money or effort on your part.

There was a similar setup at a Madewell party last night, except it looks like cut-up duct tape was used. (Obviously stronger but might mess up the paint, so test, test, test, if you’re going to try this at a rented venue!)

A photo posted by Thayer Gowdy (@thayerandco) on

And the clever women at A Practical Wedding riffed on the idea using flowers they printed with the HP Sprout (which I want to know more about).

I think brides are going to latch onto this decorating idea for several reasons: (1) It’s not too expensive. The whole thing will work best with hardy blooms, like carnations, which are some of the cheapest you’ll find. (2) It doesn’t require too much “vision.” You’re not painting a mural or chipping away at in ice sculpture. You (or your florist) don’t need to be an artist to make this look good. (3) It’s truly original. Sure, it’s all over Pinterest, but it’s something that hasn’t been done to death—yet. Since weddings have been happening since the dawn of time—and everyone goes to so damn many of them—it’s fun to pull of something that all your guests haven’t seen a thousand times over.

Would you copy the washi tape flower wall for your wedding?

I think it’s sweet.

How to Change Up Your Wedding Dress to “Match” Your Wedding

0
0

As much as the bridal magazines (and I!) tell brides to hold off on buying a wedding dress till after you’ve found your venue, lots of brides buy their wedding dress first and pick a venue second. The good news is, unless your dress is majorly statement-y (an aisle-wide ball gown or mini tutu), you can switch up your accessories to make it “match” the rest of your wedding. Here to prove my point, our three real-bride models, stepping out in BHLDN’s Avery Gown this week. (The belt in the picture below isn’t part of the dress.)

Catherine Deane Avery Gown, $1,500.

Here’s how the same dress would work at pretty much any venue.

YOUR CHIC CITY LOFT WEDDING
2-stylish-wedding-accessories-0211

Your venue is sleek, chic, and refined, and your look should be too. Tribeca Rooftop, New York City.

3-stylish-wedding-accessories-0211

Step away from that cathedral-length veil. Our friend Nicole from Brides got a streamlined sash and a low-key little birdcage blusher. Albertina Sash, $300. Nicolette Flower Blusher, $250.

YOUR BOHO TROPICAL BEACH WEDDING
4-stylish-wedding-accessories-0211

You’ll have the wind in your hair (no fussy updo here) and maybe bare feet. Your accessories should feel as chill as you do. Sandals Emerald Bay, Bahamas.

5-stylish-wedding-accessories-0211

Too much bling would compete with the sea. We kept things soft for real bride Johannah, who covers fashion for the New York Post, and who’s actually having a tropical destination wedding. Carmen Halo, $350. Trillium Sash, $250.

Mother Nature’s pulling out all the stops here, so there’s no need to compete with her. Ponte Family Estate, Temecula, California.

On our friend Caty, from The Knot, we added a few hints of bling to sparkle in the sunshine. (Hopefully!) Silver Rush Belt, $375.

Crystallized Hairpin, in-store only. Similar: Primrose Hairpin, $140.

All the gorgeous hair and makeup is by the insanely talented JoAnn Solomon.

Do your wedding dress and your wedding match?

We picked our venue, a winery, first, so I went with a super-simple dress.

Watercolor Wedding Dresses: Pretty Much the Most Romantic Thing a Bride Can Walk Down the Aisle In

Ladies, can everyone take a seat. There’s a 96 percent chance wedding dress you’re about to see—a custom watercolor gown by Kathryn Conover—will make you weak in the knees. And I don’t want to send anyone to the ER so close to Valentine’s Day. Are you all comfortable? Lovely. Let’s proceed.

A photo posted by Voncierge (@voncierge) on

Can you even take how pretty it is? And the bow in the back is just perfection. Of course, this isn’t the first time I’ve shared a watercolor wedding dress on Save the Date. Heidi Elnora’s Valerie Lynn is always on my favorites list:

Does it get more romantic than this? In short: no. (Rory is randomly obsessed with the Valerie Lynn too. I guess that’s what happens when you’re married to, um, me.)

Would you wear a watercolor wedding dress? Which of these dresses is your favorite?

You’re engaged! That’s great news! Now, for the not-so-great news: It’s not all rainbows and butterflies from here to your wedding day. That post-engagement high has a shelf life. To ease you through the months that lie ahead, here’s my breakdown of the feels you’ll feel—pretty much all of ’em—from now to when you’re standing at the top of the aisle.

wedding-planning-start-to-finish-0212-getty

1. ELATION
Oh. Em. Gee! Your grin is grinning and your finger’s blinging and 78 percent of what you say is coming out in squeaks. You might try to regroup and maintain some level of cool—you knew the proposal was coming, after all—but then someone will pour you another glass of champagne, and you’ll be giddy all over again.

2. EDGINESS
While you’re still knee-deep in ELATION, that questions start coming: When are you thinking? Where are you thinking? What are you wearing? OMG, am I a bridesmaid? Here’s the secret to moving through this stage quickly: Smile and say, “We’re just going to enjoy being engaged for a while. We’ll start planning in the summer.”

3. DELUSION
OK, you’ve wrapped your head around this “engagement” thing and you’re ready to maybe start thinking about the big day. You know, in theory. You’re not going to make a huge deal, after all. Bridezilla? More like bride-chilla. You’ll get a dress and some food, says some vows, and be done with it. You’re certainly not going to freak out or be one of THOSE brides.

4. CONFUSION
Wait, a wedding dress costs how much?! And WHAT are they charging for food? On what planet? Are these flower prices in U.S. dollars or yen? How is there a whole industry built around these criminally high price points? Pre-engagement you probably scoffed at the average cost of a wedding—around $30,000—but now it’s starting make sense.

5. ANNOYANCE
You finally start to get into your planning groove. You’ve researched not-too-expensive wedding dresses and chic-on-the-cheap invitations. You can talk about your wedding without breaking into hives—until your future mother-in-law asks why you’re not having a “proper” soup course and someone in the grocery store line scoffs at the idea of DIY centerpieces. Rather than argue with unwanted opinions, break out the smile, and say, “Thanks for that information. We’ll totally take that into consideration.”

6. OBSESSION
You’ve GOT this wedding-planning thing, and you’re running with it. You have 42 carefully organized Pinterest boards and you’re wheeling and dealing to-do lists like a boss. Your bridesmaids know exactly what you expect of them {That’s what Google calendars are meant for, right? } and your groom has a carefully worded checklist to tackle. (“Order boutonnieres. Pale pink garden roses. (NOT regular roses.) Make sure the pink is PALE, not dusty. Barf.”) Just make a point to ask your friends about things outside your wedding. (No, “Did you get your bridesmaid dress yet?” doesn’t count.) And plan a once-weekly date night with a wedding-talk ban—at least until the dessert course.

7. DELIRIUM
The precarious time when everything’s pretty much figured out but not carved in stone. You have a dress. (But is it THE dress?) You’ve ordered chocolate wedding cake. (But do we need red velvet too?) You love your invitations. (But have you looked at ALL the invitations?!) Do yourself a favor: Once you make a well-thought-out decision, go with it. Don’t even consider changing your mind—or ordering another wedding dress—even if there’s still wiggle room, time-wise.

8. DENIAL
It’s too close. It’s happening too fast. And everyone’s mad at you. (“LONG reception tables?!” your future father-in-law roars. “They must be ROUND!”) There will be no wedding. Or maybe you’ll elope, a deux. Goodbye, cruel wedding-planning world.

9. ACCEPTANCE
There will be a wedding. Maybe the tables will be round and the boutonnieres will be dusty pink. Hopefully you won’t walk down the aisle in your skivvies, but even if you do, at the end of the day you’ll be married, which is all you wanted to begin with.

You should be able to navigate out of most of these stages pretty quickly if you keep your cool, but I’m pretty sure every bride who’s planning a “traditional” wedding spends some time in every last one of ’em, even if her OBSESSION is a single frenzied weekend with wedding magazines and her DELIRIUM is a momentary lapse that’s quelled with a glass (or three) of Shiraz.

Did you manage to make it through wedding planning without hitting any of these stages? Or did you progress through every last one of ’em?

The Bridesmaid Dresses and LWDs You’ve Been Searching for (Literally!) Are Finally Here

If you aren’t using Loverly to plan your wedding yet, you should be. It’s like a weddings-specific Pinterest, but it’s much easier to navigate from the pretty pictures to the vendors. (You know sometimes you find, say, a wedding dress on Pinterest, but when you try to click through, it takes you to some random creepy Tumblr page, and you can’t figure out where the dang dress is from? That doesn’t happen on Loverly.)

And now there’s another reason to click your way over to Loverly: Because the site is search-based (brides go on to search for the bridesmaid dresses and LWDs of their dreams) the brains behind the operation had a lot of data about what brides were looking for—and not finding. So they teamed up with designer Eva Franco—whose whimsical clothing line is hugely popular at Anthropologie—to fill in the gaps. And the dresses they came up with are pretty fab. Here are three of my favorite bridesmaid dresses from the line:

And an LWD I’m obsessed with—SO sweet for your reception:

You know I’m loath to use the words “wear-again potential,” but these look like dresses I’d buy at Anthropologie to attend a wedding. (God knows I’ve laid down some cash there, as a wedding guest.)

The 3 Best Hairstyles for a Beach Wedding

beach-wedding-hairstyle-ideas

Planning to get married with your toes in the sand? Lucky! But while many aspects of your wedding beauty routine might be more laid-back at the beach—who needs airbrushed makeup when sunshine and sea breezes have you glowing?—choosing a hairstyle requires some extra thought. Here's a place to start: our three favorite hairstyle ideas for a beach wedding, all of which will maintain their gorgeousness through humidity, high winds, or whatever else your adventurous day brings.

1. A messy bun Forget polished perfection. Starting out with a smooth chignon is only going to lead to frustration with every little flyaway. Starting out messy creates a texture that's more forgiving. Love this example on Leslie Mann, with the sweet wisps coming loose.

leslie-mann-hairstyle-idea-wisps

leslie-mann-hairstyle-idea-wisps-2

2. Anything braided A bohemian braid only gets prettier when a little wind-whipped, yet its weave helps protect hair from humidity (and holds it back from going full frizzy). You could incorporate smaller braids into a half-up hairstyle—check out our new favorite example, seen on Lauren Conrad yesterday—or go full braided updo, like Emily Blunt did recently—and look at the beautiful accent she wove in too.

emily-blunt-into-woods-updo-cord-braid-hairstyle

3. Beachy waves (obvs) As anyone who's tried getting sexy beachy waves knows, this look isn't quite as effortless as its vibe implies. The key is building up texture and hold using the right products, to prevent frizz or flatness once your waves head outdoors. But if you get it right, this texture is just perfect for your beautiful day at the beach. Here's our detailed how-to for copying this version worn by Nicola Peltz.

I’m afraid if you don’t laugh at this, we can no longer be friends:

I don’t care if you love or hate cats. That tiny feline head sticking out from the top of the wedding dress is the best thing I've ever seen. And seeing that furry little face on your wedding day will make everyone who walks by giggle.

And one of you can have the exact same vintage hanger for your very own: I was able to track down a look-alike on Etsy!

Half-Up Wedding Hair You Can DIY, Hot Off the Fashion Week Runways

Swap out this model’s metallic pink headband—spotted on yesterday’s Honor NYC runway—for a wide ribbon and you have instant wedding hair, right? From the barely curled ends to slightly bumped-up up section, I adore this look for a bride.

A photo posted by The Cut (@thecut) on

I’d comb the product out of the pieces on the side of her forehead to make them a little softer, but after that, I think it works just as well for walking down the aisle as it does for walking down the runway. I even think an edgier bride could make the metallic pink work. And with a little practice, the whole look is totally DIY-able.

Would you copy this half-up hair for your wedding day? Or do you want something a little more formal?

PS Beth spotted another awesome look at the Honor show.

A Little Bit Naughty, a Little Bit Nice: These Wedding Dresses Are Fifty Shades-Chic

Looking for a wedding dress with a side of light bondage? These four—all from Hayley Paige’s spring 2015 runway—titillate with metal studs and strips of leather. (The entire top of dress No. 2 is leather, actually.) They’re definitely more punk rock than your average wedding dress, but given all the oohs and aahs these got during bridal market, I’m guessing there are a bunch of edgy brides seeking out exactly this.

Lady Gaga Just Shared a Photo of Her Heart-Shaped Engagement Ring! Come See!

That didn’t take long: We just learned that Lady Gaga said yes to a Valentine’s Day proposal from Taylor Kinney, and she just shared a photo of her heart-shaped engagement ring! Ta-da!

He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!

Clearly it’s a super-size heart-shape diamond, and I think I spy pave diamonds on the band. I love it for her! Heart-shaped diamonds usually feel sweet to me, but on Gaga, they’re badass.

Thoughts on Lady Gaga’s engagement ring? Would you want an engagement ring with a heart-shaped diamond?

She and Taylor should get married in Paris, like this couple!

If Taylor Kinney had asked me to help him pick Lady Gaga’s engagement ring, I don’t know that I would have picked the same massive heart-shaped diamond he did—and yet somehow it totally works for her. (I guess that’s why he’s marrying her and I’m married to someone else.) And it turns out there are loads more stylish heart engagement rings out there.

Of course there are rings that mirror Gaga’s on a smaller scale.

Hey, Outdoor Brides: These DIY Wedding Decorations Will Make Your Walk Down the Aisle Even Sweeter

There’s no need to put a bunch of fancy floral decorations down the aisle at your outdoor wedding: Mother Nature probably has plenty of her own going on, and it’s not a competition. (Plus, adding flowers is expensive.) If you’d like to add some color to your ceremony without spending a bunch of money, I adore these sweet, DIY aisle decorations:

Check out the rest of this DIY wedding on Something Turquoise.

I think the key to pulling off these mini heart stakes is to make piles and piles of ’em—I’d guess there’s at least 100 in this picture, possibly more. Since they’re low to the ground, you need a whole bunch makes a statement.

Thoughts on these DIY aisle decorations? Would you copy them for your wedding?

This is something I totally would have done, so I’m glad no one had thought of ’em yet when I got married.

A Vanderpump Rules Star Takes the Crop-Top Wedding Dress Trend Off the Runway

0

I don’t share Petra’s obsession with Vanderpump Rules—in her words, “Bravo's brilliantly flashy-trashy Real Housewives spinoff.” But I do have an obsession with weddings and wedding dresses, so when Petra passed on Scheana Marie and Shay’s Official Wedding Video, obviously I was all over that.

Scheana Marie, an employee of Lisa Vanderpump’s Sur, is the second real-life bride I’ve seen rock the crop-top wedding dress trend—see the first here—and it seems like she had an absolute blast on her wedding day. (Petra’s pretty sure Scheana’s aunt made the wedding dress, which is impressive in of itself.)

Do you like crop-top wedding dresses on real-life brides? Or should this trend be strictly for the runways?
