Brit Actress Kara Tointon's Fringed Red Carpet Dress: Would You Wear It as a Wedding Dress? Or Would You Rather Walk Down the Aisle Naked?

1-kara-tointon-bafta-dress-2013-dennis-basso-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-0513

I was flipping through red carpet film from the weekend, and Brit actress Kara Tointon's fringed Dennis Basso dress from the British Academy Television Awards totally jumped out at me—but I can't decide if that's a good thing!

In addition to his regular collection, Dennis Basso also designs wedding dresses for Kleinfeld, so it's not surprising that the dress has a wedding-y vibe. I mean, just look at that beading:

2-kara-tointon-bafta-dress-2013-dennis-basso-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-0513

But the dress may have lost me at the asymmetrical fringe (you can see that better on the runway), which would either be majorly fun for dancing—or just majorly weird.

What do you think? Would you wear Kara Tointon's fringed Dennis Basso dress from the British Academy Television Awards as a wedding dress? Or would you rather walk down the aisle naked?

I mean, if naked were my only other option, I'd wear the dress. And I actually really, really love it from the top layer of fringe up. But I'd request it with symmetrical fringe, if possible!

Holly Madison Reveals Wedding Date to Boyfriend Pasquale Rotella

Ready the white stilettos and the church bells, because Holly Madison has decided on a wedding date! The former Playboy Bunny and boyfriend Pasquale Rotella let the cat out of the bag during a May 12 E! documentary special Holly Has a Baby—and it's sooner than fans might think: August 14.

holly-madison-pasquale-rotella-wedding-date

The pair have been dating since the end of 2011 but were previously unable to lock down a wedding date due to their respective busy work schedules. Plus, Madison revealed during the documentary, she wanted to wait until Rotella officially popped the question before getting ahead of herself with details. The pair welcomed daughter Rainbow Aurora into the world on March 5.

Holly Madison's Maternity Style!

During the special, however, Las Vegas entrepreneur Rotella surprised Madison with two pieces of great news: He had already picked out several engagement rings, and he'd found a date that would work for both of them. An ecstatic Madison proclaimed her life "complete."

The documentary followed the former Girls Next Door star and Rotella getting ready for the arrival of their first child together, so that by the time they headed to the hospital, they were fully prepared for that magic moment.

"The pain of a contraction feels like squeezing all of your insides together into a tiny marble," she commented as she waited for her epidural.

The 33-year-old reality star previously opened up to Us Weekly about anticipating the arrival of Rainbow and what kind of parents she thought she and her beau would be.

Stars' Engagement Rings: The Look for Less

"It's hard to say because it's my first time," she told Us in January. "I don't want to be too strict, because I think kids can get rebellious, but I want to raise my daughter to be passionate about doing good things and pursuing real things and hobbies instead of frivolous materialistic stuff."

"I Don't Want to Insult My Younger Sisters by Making Them 'Junior Bridesmaids'—but What ARE They?!"

reader-dilemma

Writes Save the Date reader Gena:

I have three sisters ages 14 to 19 who I'm extremely close with, and I'm struggling with how I should include them in my wedding. For how important they are to me, I would love to have them be involved, but they wouldn't be able to do much more than stand next to me at the wedding because of their ages. They wouldn't be able to contribute to any activities (bridal shower, wedding) or even attend the bachelorette party. However, naming them junior bridesmaids doesn't sound right to me. Should I exclude them entirely from the wedding or include them as bridesmaids that just walk down the aisle? Help!

Here are my thoughts:

Yeah, 14 is probably too old for the "junior bridesmaid" title. I mean, it's basically the equivalent of "senior flower girl," and once you hit high school, you're too old for a title like that. (And one of your sisters is college age!)

I'd go ahead and make them full-fledged bridesmaids, but let the rest of your bridesmaids know that their contributions—especially financial contributions—might be limited. That said, if I were the bride, I'd go out of my way to help them feel included.

Maybe they could help make shower favors. Or bake something. Or put together a little home movie about you and your fiance to share with guests. And obviously you don't want them tagging along if you're headed to a strip club, but you could always do a PG-rated bachelorette activity (like this one!) and include them in that. And if one of the three doesn't mind speaking, you could ask her to make a speech at the rehearsal dinner.

I think if you look for ways to include them, they'll feel like full-fledged bridesmaids, even if they aren't in the back of the party bus with you. Their duties don't need to be limited to walking down the aisle!

Ladies, what do you think? Should Gena make her sisters bridesmaids? Junior bridesmaids? Or nothing at all?

Glamour Exclusive: Vera Wang Is Designing FLOWERS for Your Wedding That Are Just as Pretty as Her Gowns—And Even More Accessible. Here Are the First Pics!

I'm SO excited to announce this partnership: Vera Wang, who we all know and love, is teaming up with FTD {Who I coincidentally just ordered my mom a birthday bouquet from—Shhhhh! } to bring brides and grooms everywhere to-die-for wedding flowers.

The Vera Wang Wedding Collection, which is available online now, starts at just $14.99 and includes flowers for brides, grooms, and the wedding party—plus, ceremony and reception decorations.

Wedding flowers (and flowers in general) tend to overwhelm me, but I know pretty when I see it, and these flowers are top-notch pretty. Since flowers weren't particularly high on my wedding priorities list, I would have been THRILLED to place a flower order online and call it a (wedding) day. Making everything even simpler: The collection has been divided into three style-specific groups, Traditionalist, Romanticist, and Modernist, so it's easy to pick pieces that match. Here's a sampling of the offerings.

STYLE 1: Traditionalist

A Super-Sweet Wedding Gift That the Bride and Groom Probably Won't Ask for. (But We LOVE Ours!)

0
0

Rory and I were NOT a fancy-pants bride and groom. We registered for ultra-simple dishes in a white-on-white pattern and totally plain flatware. Five years later, we're still totally happy with both and use them daily. We didn't register for fine china or crystal goblets or a real-deal silverware set (despite Rory's mom's insistence that we'd regret it), and we're still totally happy with that decision too. And still, there was one super-fancy gift that I'm happy someone got us.

One of my mom's friends mailed us a fancy-shmancy bottle of champagne and two handblown crystal champagne flutes from Tiffany & Co. We NEVER, EVER in a million years would have asked for them, but I kind of love pulling out the big blue Tiffany box on those rare occasions that we deem bottle-of-champagne-worthy and sipping from grown-up crystal instead of our mismatched wineglasses. (We registered for decent wineglasses, but we've broken and replaced so many that I don't know if we have a matching pair anymore!) Even if we're having champagne and Thai takeout to celebrate a promotion—or, you know, surviving the week with a two-year-old—it just feels special. And it's a gift I bet even your no-frills friends would wind up loving.

Here's the set that we were gifted:

1-awesome-wedding-gift-0514

Tiffany Champagne Flute Set, $125 for 2.

And some vintage-y looking ones from BHLDN:

2-awesome-wedding-gift-0514

"I Do" Flutes from BHLDN, $128 for 2.

But I'm kind of more into old-fashioned champagne coupes these days. One of the designers at Bridal Market was serving bubbly in these super-simple Efva Attling coupes. You can't really see the best part in this photo, but each glass is wearing a little removable "bracelet" that's inscribed amor vincent omnia, which fellow high school Latin students will know means love conquers all. So romantic!

3-awesome-wedding-gift-0514

Efva Attling Champagne Coupes, Efva Attling Boutique (36 Little West 12th Street, New York, N.Y. 10014, 212-510-7071), price upon request.

Here's a pretty set from Williams-Sonoma:

4-awesome-wedding-gift-0514

Dorset Champagne Coupes from Williams-Sonoma, $59.95 for 2.

Obviously these are spendy options—and obviously you can find less-expensive alternatives—but I think there's something extra awesome about being gifted something you'd never in a million years splurge on for yourself, ya know?

Would you like to receive fancy-pants champagne glasses, even if they're not something you'd ask for? Would you give 'em as a gift?

Now that I've reminded myself how much we love our set, I'm totally splurging when a friend gets engaged!

New Oscar de la Renta Wedding Dresses: All the Elegance of Vintage Wedding Dresses—With Gorgeous, Modern Twists

I love a wedding dress with a vintage-y vibe, but unless you're actually wearing your grandmother's wedding dress {Amazing, obvi! }, why not update things with, say, an edgy train or a sparkly belt? With that in mind, here are five wedding dresses from Oscar de la Renta's latest collection that look almost vintage at first glance, but if you look closer, they all have a little something fresh going on.

Majorly Stressed About Wedding Planning? THIS Will Make You Feel All Better

0
0

Look, it's OK to get stressed about petty stuff when you're wedding planning. I certainly did. Freaking out about the seating chart? Been there. Crying post-alterations appointment, when my wedding dress gave me saggy diaper butt*? Done that. So I thought those of you in the throes of wedding planning could use a little reminder about what really matters, juuuuust in case you found yourself losing perspective.

How gorgeous and amazing was all of that? Did it make you feel better?

It definitely made my recent "problems" seem a little less awful!

*Thankfully a second round of alterations fixed that!

Hayden Panettiere Continues to Wear Engagement-y Looking Ring, Remains Mum on Engagement Rumors

1-hayden-panettiere-engaged-wladimir-klitschko-engagement-ring-proposal-marriage-proposal-proposal-ideas-celebrity-weddings-0515

First of all, while we're on the topic of Hayden Panettiere, I just have to thank the TV gods that Nashville was renewed for next season. Now on to more wedding-y things: Hayden was out and about at the ABC upfronts party last night. She didn't have (alleged) secret fianceWladimir Klitschko on her arm on the red carpet—but she DID have the sparkly diamond ring she's been wearing for two months straight on her right-hand ring finger. Here's a better look.

2-hayden-panettiere-engaged-wladimir-klitschko-engagement-ring-proposal-marriage-proposal-proposal-ideas-celebrity-weddings-0515

Obviously an engagement ring traditionally goes on a woman's left hand, but as I've said, if I were trying to keep my engagement under wraps, I think throwing it onto my right hand would be a great way to throw off the masses.

Given that SOME people are obsessed with Nashville {Not mentioning any names… **cough, me** }, I can understand why she's trying to keep her private life private, but I wish she'd just tell us so I could start picking dresses already!

Do you think Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko are secretly engaged? Or do you think she's just REALLY attached to her right-hand ring?

Celebrity Wedding Rumor Mill: EVERYONE Is About to Get Engaged or Married, So What Gossip Do We Believe?

0
0

angelina-jolie-brad-pitt-cam-mitch-modern-family-kim-kardashian-kanye-west-johnny-depp-amber-heard-celebrity-weddings-engaged-married-0516

According to the celebrity wedding rumor mill, pretty much every famous couple you've ever heard of—and some couples you've maybe never heard of—will be getting engaged or married over the next few months! Exciting stuff! If any of it's true. Which of these rumors do we believe?

Brad Pitt&Angelina Jolie
After making headlines earlier this week for undergoing a preventative double mastectomy, Angelina Jolie has the media buzzing once again. According to the Daily Mail, "Angie has said [her wedding to Brad Pitt] will happen sooner rather than later." Following the couple's 2011 engagement there were rumblings of a wedding at Chateau Mirval, their estate in France, but the Daily Mail is now reporting that the wedding will be elsewhere—possibly in another country, such as Cambodia or Haiti—due to security concerns. Read the full story here.

Cam & Mitch on Modern Family
Gay marriage isn't legal in California (yet!) but the ACLU is pressing ABC to air a wedding between Modern Family's super-cute two-daddy couple, Cam and Mitch. (I spotted the gossip on LAist. You could always marry in NYC, fellas!) Their petition reads: "The freedom to marry is spreading. So it's time for America's biggest, red-beard-iest prime-time couple to get hitched in front of millions of American viewers." Check out the full invitation here—and RSVP to let ABC know you'd totally tune in to see Cam and Mitch say "I do"!

Kim Kardashian&Kanye West
OK! magazine's big cover story this week "reveals" that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are planning to elope in Paris. (One hundred and eighty degrees away, competing rag mag InTouch is reporting this week that Kanye is gay.) I refuse to read OK! {Yes, I have standards, albeit low ones. } but I'm guessing the wedding would have to happen post-baby, because Kim's rapidly approaching the time when it's not recommended for a pregnant mama to fly. I am kind of wondering why they're not engaged yet (I just thought they would be—I don't think they need to rush!) but I don't know if the fact that a settlement has been reached means Kim's divorce is official. Read the full story here.

Johnny Depp&Amber Heard
Since we've already tread into "ridiculous" territory (see above) I might as well mention that the National Enquirer is reporting that Johnny Depp asked Amber Heard to be his Mrs. on her birthday, April 22. "Johnny is said to have realized how much 27-year-old Amber means to him so has taken steps to prove it to her." Because apparently a nice necklace or something wouldn't have been sufficient "proof" after all these, um, months they've been dating. Read the full story here.

Which of these weddings do you think will happen?

I think No. 1 will happen in 2013. I hope, hope, hope No. 2 happens. I think No. 3 will eventually happen (although maybe not in Paris) but probably post-baby. And I don't believe No. 4 at all!

The No. 1 Way to Make Bridesmaid Dress Shopping 94 Percent Less Miserable for Your Friends. Because You're a Cool Bride Like That

0
0

As a bride, the very worst thing you can do to your bridesmaids is invite them on a "Super-Fun Bridesmaid Dress Shopping Trip!" and then drag them around from boutique to boutique for hours on end. The "Super-Fun Bridesmaid Dress Shopping Trip!" is fun for approximately no one—including you. So here's how you can save everyone loads of aggravation AND still get cute bridesmaid dresses for your friends.

Click your way over Weddington Way then take the 2.5 seconds to create an account. You give them basic info, like your name and your wedding date, then you have access to browse almost 1,000 bridesmaid dresses. If you'd rather not look at hundreds upon hundreds of bridesmaid dresses (because that WOULD be pretty boring) you can sort them by, say, color and price, which is what I did here. ($460 for a bridesmaid dress? No thanks!)

1-weddington-way-0415

To narrow down the selection further, you can select a designer, wedding theme, length, fabric family, neckline, body shape, season, and/or average customer ratings. (Whew!) Then as you start getting down to a reasonable number of dresses, you add them to your showroom, where you virtually store all your faves.

2-weddington-way-0415

Once your showroom is stocked, you share it with your bridesmaids (and your mom and future MIL, or whoever, if you're so inclined) and they can vote and comment on the different designs. Eventually, through the process of elimination, you should be able to narrow it down to a few group-favorite styles, which you can order through Weddington Way, or go try on at a brick-and-mortar boutique. (I'd be SO fine doing everything online, since bridesmaid dresses are made to be altered, and you can virtually chat with a Weddington Way stylist about sizing and fit ahead of time. You can also call them on the phone, so it all seems super-accessible.)

I've never crowd-sourced bridesmaid dress shopping before, but I'm really into this option. Especially after being dragged on a "Super-Fun Bridesmaid Dress Shopping Trip!" or 15 in my day.

Would you do all of your bridesmaid dress shopping online? Or do you think you can actually make a "Super-Fun Bridesmaid Dress Shopping Trip!" fun? (Or at least not miserable.) As a bridesmaid, would you be OK with a virtual shopping trip?

I'd be SO fine with it.

Bling-y Wedding Rings for Guys: Do or Don't? (Apparently They're Popular!)

0

Confession time: About six months ago, Vera Wang started selling men's wedding bands through Zales—where you can also buy her sparkle-tastic engagement rings—but I didn't share them with you guys. Why? Because all of the men's rings feature diamonds, and I was thinking, "My readers SO will not go for that!"

diamond-wedding-rings-for-men-0516

Vera Wang Love Collection Wedding Band from Zales, $1,999.99.

Then I got an email from a reader named Elle, whose groom specifically requested a wide wedding band with a "sizable" center stone. And THEN I just heard from some industry people that bling-y wedding rings for guys are flying off the jewelry counters lately. Well color me surprised!

So I'm wondering: Am I totally out of touch with guys' style? Does your groom want a bling-y wedding ring?

Engagement Ring 3

Rhia and her boyfriend, Dallas, were walking around drinking coffee when he handed her his cup and kneeled down to tie his shoe—and then pulled out an engagement ring. "He said he had been carrying the ring around for a month, waiting for the perfect moment!" she says.

Engagement Ring 4

Courtney didn't want a plain diamond—she wanted something colorful in a classic setting so her ring would be traditional with a twist. Her boyfriend proposed with this pink diamond ring, which she calls "magical"!

Engagement Ring 5

Speaking of colorful diamond's, Jessica's boyfriend chose this blue diamond ring. Since he was attending school to get his second degree, she was totally surprised when he proposed.

If you'd like to share a photo of your ring on Save the Date, you can click here to submit it with the contact form. Or you can email a photo to glamour.weddings.girls@gmail.com. Which Dress Fabrics Work Best for a Summer Wedding?

brides-blog-logo_new.jpg

You may be dreaming of satin wedding dress, but if you're getting married in the sweltering summer months, is it your best bet? Brides' wedding experts are here to answer your wedding dress questions.

Is satin too heavy a fabric for a summer wedding? I'm getting married in June.

A satin gown is best for a fall to early-spring wedding. Since you'll be marrying when temperatures will be balmy, choose a dress made from a lightweight, airy fabric like silk-organza, tulle, or chiffon.

A Peek at Donald Faison and CaCee Cobb's Super-Fun Wedding, Including Cameos by Jessica Simpson and Zach Braff. And a Clip of Someone Doing the Worm

Scrubs' Donald Faison said "I do" to CaCee Cobb, a.k.a. Jessica Simpson's best friend, back in December, and their video guy is sharing a sneak peek at what looked like a super-fun party—with a bluegrass band! In my professional opinion, any wedding that features someone doing the worm was probably a blast.

From People: Other guests included Ashlee Simpson and Seth Green, Donald's Scrubs costars Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke, and his Clueless costars Breckin Meyer, Elisa Donovan, and Stacey Dash.

It thrills me that Donald is still friends with the cast of Clueless, although I'm wondering why Alicia Silverstone wasn't on the guest list. That is way harsh, Tai. I mean Donald.

what-not-to-put-on-your-wedding-registry-0520

I was clicking around the WWW recently when I stumbled across a blog post called "11 Tech Items to Consider for Your Wedding Registry." And proceeded to spit coffee all over my laptop. {But don't worry! It seems I'm allowed to register for a new one! } I'm not naming any blog names, but here's the list:

1. DSLR camera, like the Nikon D800
2. Laptop
3. iPad
4. Flat-screen TV
5. Record player, like this affordable Wood Turntable
6. iPod speakers

I know I tend to be old-fashioned when it comes to registries, but lots of the items on this list made me cringe. The writer did check in with etiquette pro Anna Post, who said it's fine to have tech-y items on your registry, which I agree with, but I'm wondering if she shared the above list of "a few basic items to consider."

For starters, No. 1 is a THREE THOUSAND DOLLAR camera. I'm all for adding registry gifts that multiple guests can chip in for, but this just seems greedy.

2, 3, 4, and 9could be OK, as long as you're not asking for top-of-the-line models. A laptop can start in the $200 range and a small flat-screen in the mid-$100s. But all of these can easily cost into the thousands. And I know there are other standard registry times that cost a few hundred dollars (a KitchenAid stand mixer, All-Clad pots and pans), but generally speaking, those are items that will last a lifetime. I've literally gone through three laptops in the time I've had my KitchenAid. And personally, I'd rather not buy a couple a gift that's going to be in a landfill (or at least be totally outdated) in five years.

5, 6, and 7 I'm OK with. It's fun to have some not-too-serious items on your registry, and they're all around the $100 mark. (Although again, I'm partial to items that stand the test of time, and I wonder about the shelf-life of all of these.)

I'm sorry, but 8 just kind of grosses me out. I don't care if you play video games, but buy your own PlayStation. You could certainly argue that your hobby is gaming where mine is baking, but…I don't know. Just ick.

10, a $250 thermostat, feels gimmick-y to me. I guess if you have a bunch of traditional registry items and you want to throw that into the mix, fine.

And a high-tech washer and dryer, 11, are edging their way into "greedy" territory in my book. The cheapest front-loading washer I found was pushing $600, and the matching dryer cost the same. And these were the basic-fancy models. The fancy-fancy models were $1,300-plus.

I guess I'd be more comfortable with this list if it had some parameters. Like, "Here's a specific high-tech washer that is well-priced and offers a bunch of great features." But I don't think brides and grooms should consider this list a green light to go on a high-tech gift grab.

And of course it's a little tougher to set up a wedding registry if you already live with your groom and own a bunch of stuff, but I'd rather upgrade my dishes (and donate the old ones) than have my wedding guests think I'm greedy.

Am I being too uptight? Would you be weirded out if you saw a $3,000 camera on a friend's wedding registry? Or is that just what the kids are asking for these days?

"Can I Wear This White Dress as a Wedding Guest?" Erm, I Say DON'T

what-to-wear-to-a-wedding

Liz Claiborne Mirror-Print Sheath Dress from JCPenney, $45.

Writes Save the Date reader Beth:

My husband's co-worker is getting married in July, and the reception is in the evening at a country club. I really want to impress his co-workers, most of whom I've never met. I fell in love with this dress, but is it appropriate to wear to a wedding since it's ivory and black? Help!

Here are my thoughts:

Sorry, but I wouldn't.

I mean, look, obviously you're not going to get mistaken for the bride in this dress, but there are still several reasons I think it's a no-no:

1) It's mostly white. The bride might not care at ALL about what her guests are wearing, but I can pretty much guarantee that a busybody great-aunt (or SOMEBODY there) will be all abuzz about "that lady who's wearing white," so why not just pick another color? ANY other color.

2) It's not that dressy. Obviously it will all depend on which evening the wedding's happening, but this just doesn't feel very festive to me, especially if the wedding's on a Saturday night.

3) You said you want to impress his co-workers. If you hope to make an awesome first impression, I wouldn't risk it with this dress. They too could be totally cool with it, but why not pick a dress that's (again) ANY other color, juuuuust in case?

4) I'm guessing you're not close with the bride. If the bride were your co-worker, you could 100 percent email her a photo of the dress and ask her to weigh in. But assuming the two of you aren't on a "shoot her an email" basis, you don't want to be the plus-one who's pestering the bride. (See: You said you want to impress his co-workers.)

Ladies, what do you think? Should Beth wear this dress? Or suck it up and buy something different?

What to Wear to a Wedding When You're Expecting. (P.S. I Have News!)

I actually have TWO big pieces of news to share with you all! (No, NOT twins!) In case my headline didn't make it abundantly clear, Emmett's going to be a big brother in late September! (Or early September, if Baby No. 2 is an early arrival, like Baby No. 1!)

I wasn't really showing (or suffering, thankfully) during Bridal Market, but most of my wardrobe was the wrong side of snug in the middle, which made getting dressed for fashion shows an absolute nightmare. Until I ordered some so-chic-they're-barely-maternity-wear pieces from Hatch, which is owned by the same lovely woman who owns Two Birds, a collection of bridesmaid dresses I adore. But back to Hatch. Here are the two pieces I basically alternated for six days straight.

The Jumper, $248.

2-pregnant-wedding-guest-0521

The Afternoon Dress, $208.

Yes, they're spendy, but my philosophy when shopping for maternity clothes has always been to buy very few insanely versatile high-quality pieces, and wear the bejesus out of them. My only regret with these two items is that I didn't splurge on them the first time around. I would have loved to have worn both for TWO pregnancies!

So, yeah, by switching up my jackets, jewelry, and shoes, I wore each item three times during Market. And I've worn them countless times since. In fact, these two items are on such perma-rotation that I'm planning on ordering one more item from Hatch ASAP.

The Dinner Party Dress, $298.

(Yes, I only buy clothes that are black or navy. I'm a New Yorker. Let it go.)

If I had a normal office job and wasn't "with child" (

I also think all three of these items would be SUPER cute to wear as a wedding guest. I've been trying to make the "wedding-guest jumpsuit" happen for years (much to many readers' dismay!), but jumpsuits are more popular than ever now. AND if anyone can pull off a questionable fashion piece, it's a preggo lady! (Like I said, people get that nothing else fits!)

In OTHER major news: I wanted to tell you guys that Rory (and Emmett!) and I bought a house yesterday! Not the most wedding-worthy tidbit, but longtime readers will remember that my career at Glamour started four years ago with a little personal finance blog, where I was a writer with about $30,000 in debt and god-awful credit. Little Miss Fortune's come a LONG way!

Which Hatch item do you like best for a wedding guest? Do you have any big news to share?

I'm probably going to crash a wedding this summer, just so I can wear my jumper!
