A Cheap and Easy Way to Fake Fancy Calligraphy on Your Wedding Invitations

3-cheap-wedding-invitation-calligraphy-0512

Hello Gorgeous Print from Etsy seller PrintableWisdom, $5. (The photoshopping in this image is kind of killing me. Unless that teacup was floating in real life?)

I feel so fancy when I get a beautifully hand-calligraphed wedding invitation in the mail. But it also kind of kills me, because I know custom calligraphy is so expensive (up to $1 per line!) and that pretty envelope is going directly into my recycling bin.

If you like the idea of custom calligraphy but don't want hundreds of your hard-earned dollars getting tossed away with old cereal boxes, here's a cheap and easy cheat: Type your addresses in Word, change the font to a pretty script, then change the color of all the text to the lightest shade of gray, and print your envelopes. Then use a fountain pen to write over the calligraphy. Like this:

1-cheap-wedding-invitation-calligraphy-0512

The top is the "traced" fancy font, the bottom is the printed font. I did this in under a minute last night, and I think the results were pretty good. Here's the pen I used:

4-cheap-wedding-invitation-calligraphy-0512

Pilot Plumix Fountain Pen from jetpens.com, $7.25.

The font, Apple Chancery, came with my Word suite. You can download prettier fonts from sites like dafont.com. Here are a few I found:

2-cheap-wedding-invitation-calligraphy-0512

If you choose a font that's all the same thickness, you'd use a fountain pen with a fine tip, like the Pilot Petit1 Mini Fountain Pen.

Would you use cheat the calligraphy on your wedding invitations? Do you need the custom, super-fancy version? Or will you just print your envelopes?

I typed our wedding invitation envelopes on a vintage typewriter. LONG story.

"I Asked a Friend to Be My Bridesmaid, but Now We're Barely Speaking. Can I Fire Her?" (I Say: Uh-Oh)

reader-dilemma

Writes Save the Date reader Kate:

Right after I got engaged, my mom was pushing me to make decisions about my wedding, so I caved to the pressure and hastily asked some friends to be my bridesmaids. And now I'm having serious regrets about asking one of them.

Julie and I were best friends throughout grade school and high school, but in college we had a major falling out and didn't speak for four years. About a year ago we got back in touch, and instead of testing the waters, we jumped right in and decided we were best friends again. So it made sense then to ask her to be a bridesmaid.

But since then, our relationship has sort of fizzled. After the initial excitement of reuniting, I'm starting to realize that we have nothing in common. I feel like she doesn't enjoy my company—she's always getting mad at me for small, weird things—but we're both forcing it because now she's in my wedding. She's barely even an acquaintance at this point—like, we'll pretend not to see each other to avoid awkward conversation. I'd like to ask her to step down as a bridesmaid, but I don't want to cause a rift or hurt her feelings. Help!

Here are my thoughts:

This is exactly why I tell newly engaged couples to avoid making any wedding decisions until the season after they get engaged. So if you get engaged in the summer, hold off on asking friends to be in your wedding party until the fall. People change, relationships change, and after the high from yelling "We're engaged!" wears off, you might decide as a couple that you want to have a small wedding party—or even skip the wedding party altogether. You're never going to regret waiting to ask people, but I know loads of brides who wished for a smaller wedding party after they'd already done the asking.

As far as your situation goes, I think you need to decide if you want this friend in your life or not. Your relationship seems tenuous, so if you kick her out of your wedding party, there's a decent chance you'll never speak again. And that's OK. Sometimes relationships run their course and it's easier for all parties to move on. If you're OK with that happening, just say, "I'm happy that you're back in my life, but I'm starting to realize we may never be as close as we used to be. I feel like we're kind of forcing the bridesmaid thing, so if you want to step down, I totally understand."

If you make it her decision (instead of saying, "I don't want you to be a bridesmaid any more"), she'll likely feel better about the whole thing. If she does step down, I think you have to offer to reimburse her for the cost of the bridesmaids dress, if she's already paid for it.

And if you'd like to continue working on your friendship, I think you have to keep her in your wedding party. I'd just make sure her involvement is peripheral {Don't ask her to join in all-night wedding crafting sessions, which can test even the strongest friendships. }, and when you get together, focus on low-pressure activities that aren't wedding-related, like going to the movies.

Ladies, what do you think? Should Kate kick her friend out of the wedding party? Or deal with the consequences of her overzealous asking?

9 Pairs of Chic Wedges, Just in Time for All Those Outdoor Weddings. (They're Perfect for Brides, Bridesmaids, and Wedding Guests!)

With summer a few short weeks away, all those outdoor summer weddings are just around the corner. And if you have several summer weddings on your agenda, you should probably pick up a chic pair of wedges right now. My dream dress-up wedges would be the aptly named Kimberly by Aruna Seth. (The version that's covered in Swarovski crystals, obviously.)

1-wedges-for-summer-weddings-0513

Kimberly Wedges in Rose Swarovski from Aruna Seth.

If thousand-pound shoes aren't in your budget, here are a few more reasonably priced options:

I think the key to finding a wedge that's dressy enough for a wedding is skipping versions with wooden or cork wedges, which tend to look clunky. I'm partial to satin, leather, and patent options, although if the wedding is super laid-back, you can't go wrong with a grosgrain Toms wedge, like this one:

2-wedges-for-summer-weddings-0513

Petal Grosgrain Wedges from Toms, $80.

Will you be wearing wedges to any outdoor weddings this summer? Would you wear wedges as the bride?

I totally would have—we were married outside at a winery—but there just weren't dressy wedges way back when we swapped vows.

crazy-mother-in-law-stories-0513

I've heard loads of crazy mother-in-law stories in my day. And {Shhhhh! } I may have told a few too. (My MIL told me several times, while I was planning our wedding, that she was a skinnier bride. WTF?) But ladies, nothing compares to this roundup of batsh*t-crazy mothers-in-law—all letters to the Dear Prudence column—which Slate compiled for "Mothers-in-Brawl," an article that explores mother-in-law relationships with truly shocking examples of bad mother-in-law behavior. Be prepared to cringe. (You'll have to scroll down at a few links to get to the right letter, but the goods are all there.)

+ The future mother-in-law who insists a on chocolate wedding cake—even though the bride has a severe chocolate allergy.

+ The future mother-in-law who doesn't want the bride's father to attend the wedding because he has scarring from severe burns.

+ The future mother-in-law who told the bride who her fiance's biological father was—when she told her own son that she didn't know.

+ The mother-in-law who drops in to make sure her son has enough food and clean laundry. She also makes all of his appointments—and goes to those appointments with him.

+ The aesthetician future mother-in-law who wants to laser off the bride's body hair.

+ The live-in mother-in-law who's hostile over breakfast if she heard her son and his bride doing the deed the night before.

Unsurprisingly, things get even more crazy when grandchildren (even future, imaginary grandchildren) are added to the mix:

+ The mother-in-law who poked holes in her son's condoms. (I actually think Dear Prudence missed the mark on this one. You don't need to open the package to poke holes in a condom.)

+ The mother-in-law who comforted her infant grandson—with her nipple.

+ The mother-in-law (the bride's mom, this time) who keeps telling her son-in-law that his children probably aren't his, after they were conceived through "fertility science."

+ The mother-in-law who went behind the couple's back to find out the sex of her unborn grandchild. (The baby's parents didn't want to know ahead of time.)

And—in the grand tradition of saving the best (or worst) for last:

+ The mother-in-law who repeatedly poisoned her son's wife. Dear lord.

Click here to read "Monsters-in-Brawl: The worst mothers-in-law in Dear Prudence history—and why they have such a bad reputation."

Which of these mother-in-law stories freaks you out the most? Can you beat these?

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson are finally ready to tie the knot! Since getting engaged almost four years ago Jessica and her ex-NFL-player fiance have welcomed two kids—and been on the wrong end of a bunch breakup rumors. But Us Weekly is reporting the two will definitely make it to Mr. and Mrs.—and soon! The duo are set to swap vows over July Fourth weekend, a source tells the magazine.

The two will wed in Santa Barbara, California, the source says. (They originally planned to wed in Capri, Italy, but decided it was "too much" to ask their friends to fly to Europe.)

As for the wedding dress: "Jessica is having something unique made," the source shares. "It will be very different from the Vera Wang she wore to wed Nick Lachey [in 2002]."

Thoughts on all the rumors about Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson's wedding?

When I was younger I wasn't the into holiday-weekend weddings, but now I like having the extra time to spend among friends. (Interestingly enough, shortly after Jessica and Eric got engaged, rumors were swirling that they'd tie the knot over another holiday: New Year's Eve.) In other news, I'm excited to see Jessica's dress!

7 Elegant Wedding Invitations That Prove "Understated" Doesn't Have to Equal "Boring"

Most everyone's reaction to the ultra-simple Kimye wedding invitation was "YAWN." We all guessed they were going for "understated"—with muted gray paper and an unfussy font—but to me, the invitations felt a little too understated. It's your wedding invitations, not the agenda of a PTA meeting. I think they could have used a little flair. With that in mind, here are seven minimalist wedding invitations that don't detour into Snooze Town.

Wedding Invitation 1

Artsy Attendance Invitations by Wedding Paper Divas, from $1.67 each.

Wedding Invitation 7
7-kim-kardashian-kanye-west-wedding-invitation-alternatives-0514

Artistic Angle Invitations by Wedding Paper Divas, from $1.84 each.

Of course, all that said, if the bride and groom are happy with their wedding invitation, that's all that really matters.

Thoughts on these understated wedding invitations? Which would you send? Do you think Kimye should've picked one of these instead?

Crop-Top Wedding Dresses Are Officially a Thing—and I'm Surprisingly OK With That

When Hayley Paige sent this head-turning wedding dress down the runway last fall, I'll admit I kind of cringed. With see-through corsets and cut-to-the-bellybutton necklines, wedding dresses are looking more and more like negligees, which is hard for me to get on board with.

So I was happy when the official pics of this dress came out and there was an un-cropped version. (The dress is No. 6413, if you're interested.)

1A-crop-top-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-0513

But this season brought a veritable onslaught of crop-top wedding dresses—and I'm kind of digging them.

I already shared this one, from Mira Zwillinger. (See more of her dresses here.)

Wedding Dress 1: Mira Zwillinger

And this one:

Wedding Dress 2: Houghton

Wedding Dress 4: Houghton
3-crop-top-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-0513

Wedding Dress 5: Theia
4-crop-top-wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-0513

I think they work for me because each dress shows only a sliver of skin, and the gowns are otherwise pretty conservative. I'd much rather see a discreet inch or two of ribcage than, say, than a wedding dress that dips into the bride's butt crack. (Which, unfortunately, was also a trend this season. **sigh** )

How are we feeling about crop-top wedding dresses? Which of these dresses is your favorite?

Engagement Ring #tbt: The Exquisite Cartier Diamond Prince Rainier Gave Grace Kelly

We're all familiar with Kate Middleton's sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring, but there's another fit-for-a-princess engagement ring I want to throw back to today: the 10.47 emerald-cut diamond Prince Rainier III of Monaco presented to Grace Kelly in 1956.

2-grace-kelly-engagement-ring-picture-prince-rainier-0515

Let's go in for a closer look:

3-grace-kelly-engagement-ring-picture-prince-rainier-0515

The Cartier diamond is set in platinum with bezel-set baguette side stones. Swoon.

Often a diamond that big seems like overkill, but it works on Grace Kelly, I think. First of all, at 5'7", she was on the tall side, so she presumably didn't have itty-bitty hands. And the rest of the ring is pretty low-key (there isn't a diamond halo or equally huge side stones), so the super-size center stone doesn't feel gaudy. Also, she was a princess, so if anyone can pull off a ring that big, it's someone who also wears tiaras on occasion.

Thoughts on Grace Kelly's engagement ring from Prince Rainier?

Love, love, love.

Here's Jackie Kennedy's #tbt engagement ring, if you missed it!

Hey, summer brides: If Mother Nature is playing a starring role on your wedding day, you don't need to junk up the scenery with an explosion of colors. So if you're swapping vows at a winery or by the ocean, you might consider a white-on-white wedding palette, so your venue's natural beauty can shine through. Here are 13 ways to make white-on-white work:

Exactly How to Copy This Perfect Ethereal Makeup for Weddings This Season

When celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose sent me a photo of the ethereal look he created on up-and-comer Gugu Mbatha-Raw for the Met Gala, all I could think was, Wedding makeup!, and I just had to file this one away for you ladies. How perfect would this subtly sparkling color scheme be for a bride?

gugu-mbatha-raw-makeup

Here are the exact products and techniques Nick used to create this look:

On the eyes: Armani Eyes to Kill Intense Eyeshadow in Ecailles. "For a fresh, ethereal look, apply it as a wash on the upper lids and do black liquid liner that wings out a bit, a la Sofia Loren," says Nick, who used Surratt Beauty Autographique Liner.

On the cheeks: A liquid blush (Armani Maestro Fusion Blush #400) was blended on the apples of Gugu's cheeks. "I kept it matte—no shimmer so it doesn't compete with the eyes," Nick says.

On the lips: Tom Ford Spring Lip Color Sheer in Summer Fling. "It's the perfect soft pinkish tone," Nick says.

Kimye Wedding Update: Apparently the Rehearsal Dinner's in Paris, but the Wedding Is in Italy

$

kanye-west-kim-kardashian-dress-met-gala

I'm trying to keep my cool with all the Kimye wedding rumors that are flying around, but I just have to share this news: You might recall Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's (underwhelming) wedding invitation mentioned Paris, France. (Not to be confused with Paris, Texas.) But that "Paris" line was actually connected to a line about the night before their wedding:

"On the eve of our marriage, please join us for a dinner. Friday the Twenty-Third of May, at six o'clock in the evening. Paris, France."

Now People is reporting that the wedding itself will take place at Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy, "an imposing fortress dating from the 16th century that originally protected the Italian city and its Renaissance palace from attackers."

Reports in the Italian media say the couple spent some 300,000 euros to rent the property—"known for its sweeping panoramas and the fabulous contemporary art exhibitions it hosts"—on the weekend of May 24. From People: "Kanye has spent 'several days' in Florence this week, says a source, and has been meeting with Ermanno Scervino at the Italian designer's atelier. That has fueled speculation that the bride or groom, or both, will wear his designs. (Both have donned Scervino fashions in the past, and Kim memorably stepped out in a lace Scervino creation in Las Vegas in October while celebrating her 33rd birthday.)"

I'm not sure whether marriage laws had anything to do with their alleged decision, but it seems much easier for a foreign couple to marry in Italy than in France, where either the bride or groom has to establish residency before the nuptials by living in France for 40 consecutive days.

Do you guys believe the latest round of rumors? Will Kimye really host their wedding in two different countries?

Kim Kardashian's Wedding Dress Is Still a Mystery, but Here's Exactly What Some of Her VIPs Will Be Wearing

Sorry for the back-to-back Kimye posts, but this one was already written when the "Italy" news broke. So here's just a bit more Kimye for your A.M.: I'm sure the details on Kim Kardashian's wedding dress will be kept under lock and key until the eleventh hour, but in the mean time, I can tell you exactly what some of her friends will be wearing: E! News has confirmed that Kim's BFFs will wear custom designs by Project Runway's Michael Costello to the Kimye wedding.

"The designs are very romantic silhouettes, and they all have influences of lace," the designer told E!. He's "not sure" if the bride's dress has lace or not but noted all of the guests he is dressing, "all wanted lace. I feel like lace has to be a part of wedding."

Michael's custom frocks will be worn by Brittny Gastineau, Larsa Pippen, Blac Chyna, and Carla Dibello. Here are two gowns from his latest collection, to give you an idea of his designs. (I would NOT be surprised if Kimye ask all their wedding guests to wear black, since those two love a monochromatic palette.)

Real Wedding Album: Jamie & Hiland

What better way to wrap up our week than with some gorgeous real wedding pictures straight out of sunny California? Jamie and Hiland were married November 3, 2013, in Healdsburg. Here's their love story, in the bride's words:

Hiland and I met in San Francisco through mutual friends—it was his third day as a San Francisco resident. He had just moved to town from New York, and our friendship blossomed into a romance after just a few short months. We’ve been together since. I work in the hospitality and travel industry, and we both share a love for traveling, as well as good food and drinks.

We live in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco, but LOVE being in Sonoma. When the time came for us to decide where to get married, we didn’t even think twice about Sonoma. Healdsburg became the natural choice when chef Louis Maldonado suggested we do the reception at spoonbar. Chef Maldonaldo was the chef that cooked for us more than three years ago on the night we met, at Aziza restaurant in San Francisco. So it couldn’t have been more perfect.

Our wedding was simple, modern with classic touches, and incorporated our personalities, and our love for food and cocktails. (Our place cards were little apples, and wedding favors personalized mason jar mugs with a mini bottle of Fernet!) There were plenty of cocktails, beer and wine flowing all night, and the night ended with dancing and late night pizza’s from PizZando in Healdsburg.

6:18 P.M.: John Legend was spotted in Florence, and his wife, Chrissy Teigen, looks wedding-ready in this backseat selfie, so I think it's safe to assume they're on the guest list, which makes sense, since I've heard John might perform. A piano was spotted outside Forte di Belvedere yesterday, and Kanye was a guest at John and Chrissy's Italian wedding last September, so it all adds up. (North was just shy of three months, so I'm guessing Kim passed on their wedding. #nojudgment)

5:04 P.M.: Well, Monique Lhuillier just Insta'd a photo from Madrid, so I guess she's not Kim's wedding dress designer. (I'm assuming the designer will be on site and a guest at the wedding.)

4:25 P.M.: Haha. Kanye just Insta'd a pic of himself with his future wife—taken at yesterday's pre-wedding lunch at Valentino's chateau—and a little "trophy" emoji. I'm kind of amused.

4:04 P.M.:People is reporting that Kim—wearing an off-white silk dress—was spotted walking the grounds of Italy's Villa San Michele with baby North, Kris Jenner, Kourtney, Scott Disick, and Khloe. I'm guessing the ladies left for Florence right after the rehearsal dinner. (Makes sense, since no bride wants to fly on her wedding day.)

3:56 P.M.: With just two hours to go before wedding guests are set to arrive at Forte di Belvedere, Jonathan Cheban and Brittny Gastineau take a coffee break. (And do I spy Italian Diet Cokes?!)

2:33 P.M.: According to blurry photos, the groom has landed in Florence! It looks like he shared a plane with Scott Disick and Bruce Jenner and two or three guys I don't recognize. Meanwhile, another plane carrying more guests just left Paris.

2:23 P.M.:Us has pictures of "a spectacular wall of white flowers" at Florence's Forte di Belvedere—a larger version of the gift Kanye sent his future missus to celebrate Mother's Day earlier this month—and is reporting that the bride and groom will say "I do" in front of the wall.

12:39 P.M.: Looks like a second plane—carrying hairstylist Michael Silva, who was doing Kim's hair earlier in the week, and designer Rachel Roy, as well as Carla DiBello, a close friend of Kim's (not pictured here)—is about to take off. Carla captioned her photo "And were off to see the bride..." which makes me wonder if Kim secretly flew to Florence last night.

12:11 P.M.:Us Weekly is reporting that the bride and groom hired three-Michelin-star Italian restaurateur Giorgio Pinchiorri to cater their reception.

11:25 A.M.: Yep, au revoir, Paris!

11:15 A.M.: Well this is weird: It looks like Jen Atkin, who often styles Khloe's hair, is still cooling her heels in Paris. (Check out that sugar packet.) Maybe the wedding party and their glam squad are taking a later flight. (In other news, Jen's ring is magnifique!)

11:01 A.M.: Looks to me like these guests (including Balmain's Olivier Rousteing, LaLa Anthony, and longtime Kim confidante Jonathan Cheban) are in an airport. This snap is captioned, "Early morning with the crew...here we go.."

10:53 A.M.: Wedding guest Dave Grutman (with two of Kim's besties, Malika Haqq and LaLa Anothony) shares and Instagram snap with the location "Florence Bound." At 11:54 A.M., he deleted the pic. Maybe he decided the "Florence" was an overshare?

8:31 A.M.: Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci—often mentioned as the likely designer behind Kim's wedding dress—posts the last of three photos from a night out with Naomi Campbell, so I think we can rule him out as the dress guru.

Thoughts on Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding day so far? What are you most looking forward to seeing?

For me it's the dress—ALWAYS the dress!

Kim Kardashian wasn't the only one in a white dress on her wedding day: Sisters Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall, and Kylie also wore floor-length white gowns to watch the reality star marry Kanye West">Kanye West earlier today. Khloe shared a rear view in a gorgeous landscape shots, and you could see parts of the fronts in some photo booth snaps.

And here's Kris' white mother-of-the-bride dress:

And here are some very blurry shots of the front of all their dresses, if you're interested.

The Exclusive Pics From the Kimye Wedding Are Actually Really Sweet

The creepy paparazzi photos that we've seen from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding ceremony were a little, well, creepy. But they shared some exclusive wedding pictures with E! News (E! is the network behind Keeping Up With the Kardashians) and they're really quite sweet.

I don't have the rights to the exclusive pics (like I said, E! got those), but below is a snap Kim's buddy Jonathan Cheban shared from the reception photo booth—I spy a wedding ring! (I'm assuming they're throwing signs for "West," as in "Mr. and Mrs.," not "West" as in "West Coast.") But I highly recommend heading over to E! to see some sweet photos from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's wedding—and then coming back here to discuss.

Oh! Riccardo Tisci, who designed Kim's wedding dress, just shared this pic of her final fitting. So here's another for ya:

UPDATE: Annnnnd, Kim just shared some more:

Thoughts on those pictures from Kim and Kanye's wedding?

I think they're lovely! And I think it's interesting that Kim didn't carry flowers and the guys didn't have boutonnieres. I guess a whole wall of flowers was enough.

Now that the Kimye wedding has wrapped, you might need another celebrity wedding (any other celebrity wedding) to look forward to. Well, good news! There are tons on the horizon. Here are some I'll be on the lookout for.

POTENTIAL DOUBLE WEDDINGS
Fine, I doubt either set of sisters would really share their wedding day, but how fun would that be?

  • Ashlee Simpson & Evan Ross and Jessica Simpson & Eric Johnson
  • Mary-Kate Olsen & Olivier Sarkozy and Elizabeth Olsen & Boyd Holbrook

WEDDINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN SOONER RATHER THAN LATER
I'm guessing all of these couples will wed in 2014.

  • George Clooney & Amal Alamuddin
  • Olivia Palermo & Johannes Huber
  • Jenny McCarthy & Donnie Wahlberg
  • Gabrielle Union & Dwyane Wade

WEDDINGS THAT MIGHT TAKE A WHILE
Whether the bride and groom are young or new parents or can't even settle on engagement ring, I don't think any of these couples are in a rush to wed.

  • Johnny Depp & Amber Heard
  • Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis
  • Ciara & Future
  • Emma Roberts & Evan Peters
  • Hayden Panettiere & Wladimir Klitschko They're actually waiting because of the political upheaval in Ukraine.
  • Allison Williams & Ricky Van Veen

WEDDINGS WITH EXPECTANT BRIDES
I feel like all of these weddings will happen after the babes arrive—except Snooki's. (She's said her baby is due right after her wedding date.)

  • Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher
  • Christina Aguilera & Matt Rutler
  • Snooki & Jionni Lavalle
  • JWoww & Roger Mathews

WEDDINGS OF COUPLES WHO HAVE BEEN ENGAGED FOREVER
When will these weddings happen? WILL they happen? Your guess is as good as mine.

  • Jennifer Aniston & Justin Theroux
  • Kate Hudson & Matthew Bellamy
  • Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

BACHELOR WEDDINGS
Both ladies have given out their final rose—one on the show, and one off. (And no one thinks Juan Pablo and Nikki will make it down the aisle, right?)

  • Emily Maynard & Tyler Johnson
  • Desiree Hartsock & Chris Siegfried

FORMER REALITY STAR WEDDINGS
The Hills are alive with the sound of wedding bells! And, um, The Real World: San Diego.

  • Lauren Conrad & William Tell
  • Whitney Port & Tim Rosenman
  • Jamie Chung & Bryan Greenberg

Which of these celebrity weddings are you most looking forward to?
