The 5 Most Popular Engagement Rings of 2013. Which Styles Are You Ready to Say Goodbye To?

0

The bling experts at Ritani just gave me the scoop on their top-selling engagement rings of 2013. Of course there's a halo setting in the No. 1 spot. Halos are still hugely popular, and with good reason: Those itty-bitty diamonds around the center stone make it look bigger and more sparkly. I'm also not surprised that there are two traditional round solitaires in the mix, since that's pretty much the most timeless engagement style. Here's the full top-five mix.

Which of these engagement rings is your favorite? What kind of engagement rings do you think will be popular in 2014?

I think we're going to start seeing even more rings with gemstones—as both accent stones and center stones.

Our 10 Favorite Wedding Beauty Tricks of the Whole Entire Year

0
0

The countdown to 2014 is on, so let's wrap up a year of obsessive beauty blogging (and obsessive wedding planning—anyone?) by revisiting some of the best wedding hair, makeup, skin, and nail tricks we've come across in 2013.

1. Make sure your face matches your body—if you're exfoliating often above the neck and not wearing sunscreen on your body daily, you might be mismatched. Wearing luminous makeup products that reflect the camera's flash can exacerbate this problem. (See one example here!)

2. For a smooth and flawless decolletage in your wedding gown, dust on Laura Mercier Mineral Illuminating Power in Candelight, like makeup artist Talia Shobrook did on the models at the Jenny Packham fall 2014 show.

24jenny-packham

3. Use Klorane Eye Smoothing Patches to depuff your eyes on your wedding morning, pre-makeup.

4. Don't apply your mascara (or individual false lashes) evenly all over—instead, be strategic. If you want a doll-like wide-eyed look, emphasize the lashes at the center of your eye more (with more mascara and/or longer false lashes). If you want a sexy shape, more like a cat-eye, do up the lashes at the outer corners more.

5. Be sure to review and/or fully memorize our 10 tricks for looking spectacular in your wedding photos.

6. One high-impact-yet-natural blush shade for brides is Giorgio Armani Blushing Fabric in fuchsia, as seen here on Christina Hendricks. And here are three more perfect wedding blushes to consider.

christina-hendricks-blush

7. A perfect choice if you're not sure whether to do subtle or statement lipstick—Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Creme Lipcolor in Taffetas Rose, as seen on Anne Hathaway.

anne-hathaway-lipstick

8. Not feeling traditional when it comes to your wedding manicure? (If you are, here are our favorite neutral and nude nail polish colors for brides.) How about making your fingernails or toenails your something(s) blue, like the models at Oscar de la Renta's spring 2013 show, who wore the lovely pale-blue Oscar de la Renta Nail Lacquer in Larimar.

oscar-de-la-renta-larimar

9. Spray hairpins with dry shampoo before using them in updos; the starch in the dry shampoo sticks to the hairpins and creates a good kind of friction with the hair so they will not slip out or loosen. "This also keeps you from having to use too much hairspray to keep everything in place, which could lead to stiffness," celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend told us.

10. Doing your own makeup? Make foundation appear extra polished by applying with a dampened BeautyBlender sponge.

Sick of All the Engagement Pics on Facebook? SO Is This Guy

0

Petra and I were discussing last night how annoying posed professional portraits have become. (Not just engagement photo shoots, but the family shoots, the new baby shoots, the anniversary shoots. Does a milestone not count any more unless it's professionally photographed?) Can we quit it with the matching outfits already? And the trying to look natural while lying in a field? There is NOTHING natural about lying in a field. People don't DO that unless they're having their photo taken. #endrant

Anywho, clearly this guy was annoyed with the constant stream of engagement portraits in his Facebook news feed, so he staged a little photo shoot of his own—complete with the lying-in-a-field shot—with the object of his affection. A ladder.

Is your Facebook feed clogged with professional portraits, too? Are engagement photos a DO or a DON'T?

We skipped 'em, but I do think they're useful if a bride and groom need time to get comfortable with the photographer. That said, maybe don't upload all 219 photos from the session onto Facebook.

p.s. If you haven't checked out Bad Engagement Photos yet, enjoy the end of your productivity for the day.

Everything You Need to Know About Sending Save-the-Dates

0
0

brides-logo

Do you have to send save-the-dates? Nope. But we recommend you do for a few reasons: 1) Your friends and family will appreciate the heads-up. 2) You're more likely to have first dibs on guests who know other brides getting married on the same day. 3) They're a great way to get everyone excited about your wedding—and to get your own creativity flowing early in the planning process! Here, a few useful facts about your sending out your first piece of wedding stationery.

free-cool-save-the-date-wedding-stationery-wedding-chicks-0325

When do you send them?
That depends, says stationer Ceci Johnson of Ceci New York. If you are throwing a destination wedding or getting married on a major holiday, you should give guests extra notice by sending your save-the-dates out nine months to a year in advance. Otherwise, mail them six to nine months before your wedding date.

Whom do you send them to?
Anyone you're sure you're going to invite. Do not mail cards to guests on your B-list: Once they receive a save-the-date, you're obligated to send them an invitation too. Is it acceptable to send electronic save-the-dates? Absolutely. Many of the options available today are super-chic. One caveat: For tech-challenged guests—i.e., Grandma—you'll need to follow up with a phone call.

Do you need to send invitations too?
Yes. Invites should go out about two months before your big day and should contain specific details (the ceremony and reception sites, RSVP cards) that aren't usually part of save-the-dates. That said, some guests may think your save-the-dates are invites; avoid confusion by printing "Invitation to follow" on your initial card.

6 Ways to Answer the World's Most Annoying Question: "So When Are You Getting Engaged?"

0
0

when-are-you-getting-engaged-1219

"Can I have it now? How 'bout now? Well WHEN can I have it?"

The most wonderful time of the year can quickly become the most irritating time of the year if you're waiting for an engagement ring. With all the family gatherings and the friends-from-home hangouts, there are endless opportunities for people to press you about the state of your relationship. "SO WHEN ARE YOU GETTING ENGAGED?" everyone and her brother and her mother and her dog wants to know. Here's exactly what to tell people:

WHO'S ASKING: Anyone who's already asked ad nauseam.
WHAT TO SAY: "Probably when people stop asking."

WHO'S ASKING: Your coworkers.
WHAT TO SAY: "When we can afford a wedding. Are you chipping in?"

WHO'S ASKING: Your recently engaged or married girlfriends.
WHAT TO SAY: "When you get pregnant."

WHO'S ASKING: Your grandmother—or anyone you don't want to be too harsh to.
WHAT TO SAY: "You'll be the first to know when it happens."

WHO'S ASKING: The resident gossip at your high school reunion.
WHAT TO SAY: "When I start showing" or "When his divorce is finalized."

WHO'S ASKING: Anyone you just want to shut down.
WHAT TO SAY: "Why do you ask?"

Are people pressing you to get engaged? Does it bug you? Or do you roll with it? What's your best comeback?

Handle With Care: 6 Ways to Make Sure Your Wedding Dress Is in Tip-Top Shape When You Walk Down the Aisle

0
0

wedding-dresses-wedding-gowns-alvina-valenta-1220

Alvina Valenta Wedding Dress, Style 9409.

You spent so much time finding THE dress, and even more time being stuck with pins to make sure your wedding dress fit to perfection. Now, before you step into it, review these six important tips to make sure it's still pristine when you walk down the aisle.

1) Leave it at the boutique. I know, I know. Your dress is ready, at long last, and all you want to do is take it home and stare at it. But the longer it's in your hot little hands, the more chances there are for catastrophe to strike: a cup of coffee goes flying or Chairman Meow shreds your train to ribbons. (An actual cat-astrophe.) Rather than risk disaster, ask the store owners to hold onto your dress until 48 hours before the wedding.

2) Give it some breathing room. Once you have it home, take it out of the bag (so it doesn't get crushed) and hang it from something sturdy and high—preferably in a low-traffic room, like an unoccupied guest room at your parents' house.

3) Leave spots to the professionals. If you do get a smudge or a stain on your dress before the big day, don't try to remedy it yourself. Instead, head straight to a dry cleaner who has experience with wedding dresses.

4) Wait 'til the last minute to put it on. You'll be SUPER-excited to step into your dress when the day arrives, but hold off until just before photo time. The more time you spend in your dress, the better the chances are that a bridesmaid will dump a soda down the back when she goes to hug you, or you'll drop your lipstick and leave a bright pink streak down the front.

5) Be extra-careful with your bouquet. Your wedding flowers will likely be delivered in water, so don't make a grab for your bouquet while you're wearing your dress. Ask your mom or a bridesmaid to lift the bouquet (slowly, to avoid spatters) and wrap a towel around the bottom, then hand it to you after a minute or two. And be super-duper careful if you have lilies in your bouquet: here's why.

6) Have emergency supplies on hand. Include a needle and thread and a lint brush in your stash of emergency supplies, to take care of any last-minute mishaps.

Did I forget anything? Are you worried about messing up your wedding dress before you walk down the aisle?

In one of the weddings I was in, the bride gave us our bridesmaid gifts right before the ceremony. Part of the gift was scented lotion—which I proceeded to smear across the bodice of my bridesmaid dress. Eesh.

"My Friends Assume They'll Be My Bridesmaids, But I Don't Want to Ask 'Em. Now What?"

reader-dilemma

Writes Save the Date reader Leslie:

I was engaged three years ago and started planning a wedding—with three longtime girlfriends as my bridesmaids—but the wedding was called off. After that happened, I moved across the country and have barely seen those three friends since.

Fast-forward to now, and I'm newly engaged to another man and couldn't be happier. I have new friends who are close with both me and my fiance, and I'd love to include them in my wedding party. I'm still friends with my old bridesmaids, but we're not nearly as close. If the first engagement had never happened, I wouldn't remotely be considering them as bridesmaids. But since they were bridesmaids last time, I think they all assume they will be this time around. I'm not sure how to approach this with them. Help!

Here are my thoughts:

I know it's a sticky situation, but I don't think brides should hand out wedding party invites out of a sense of obligation. I think you should address the situation with your old friends ASAP—then ask your new friends to be your bridesmaids.

Maybe you could ask the old friends to do a three-part reading together, so they still get a place of honor.

I'd just email them and say, "We're keeping our wedding party to people who we're both close with, but I'd still like you to be a part of our wedding." Maybe they'll be a little miffed—but maybe they're already on the same page as you. In any event, you'll probably have to compromise on plenty of other things in regards to your wedding; I don't think you need to compromise on this.

Ladies, what do you think? Should Leslie ask her old bridesmaids to be in her wedding party again? Or can she get away with not including them?

5 Wedding Food Trends to Consider for Your Big Day

0

brides-logo

After all the tears, laughter, and emotion of the wedding ceremony—and with a long night of dancing ahead—you and your guests are going to be hungry! No matter what time of day you're throwing a wedding reception—morning, noon, or night—the meal is one time to be both self-indulgent and show off your personality as a couple. Do you prefer formal and gourmet or finger foods with local flavor? Breakfast at dinner or teriyaki sliders accompanied by other culturally infused dishes? Couples these days are saying no to paint-by-numbers banquet meals and yes to mixing up their menus with fun, foodie-friendly options. Here, our five favorite trends you should definitely consider:

wedding-food-tiny-burgers

1. Try Breakfast.
Two words: waffle station. If you have a morning or early-afternoon reception, you can serve an elaborate breakfast or brunch that will cost much less than dinner.

2. Feed Them Family-Style.
Passing around platters of food creates a bonding moment for guests, encouraging them to interact and creating a sense of community.

3. Think Local
Regional, farm-fresh foods are good for the earth and let you show off the area's cuisine. Bonus: Local ingredients often taste better than the shipped-in stuff.

4. Create a Mini Restaurant
For a price, some caterers will allow guests to order on the spot from a limited menu—or even build a kitchen on site.

5. Order in Food Trucks
Bring street grub to the party with these food-stands-on-wheels. But check whether you'll need permits (or be ready to shell out for parking tickets).

Kim Kardashian's Wedding Dress: She Should Totally Wear This One-of-a-Kind Gown to Marry Kanye West

0
0

While I was busy photoshopping Kim Kardashian's head onto existing wedding dresses, Don O'Neill, Theia's creative director, was hard at work sketching an original wedding dress for Kim to wear when she swaps vows with Kanye West. And I looove it.

kim-kardashian-wedding-dress-kanye-west-theia-1111

Here's what Don had to say about his creation: "I chose this silhouette as it will flatter her amazing curves and fit like a second skin. It has lavish attention to detail with its intricate Swarovski crystal, silver-lined glass bead embroidery, and miniature handmade silk flowers, a confection of silk organza but on a simple and dramatic silhouette. The crystal and handmade silk organza flowers and petals create rich texture on the bodice flowing down on to the dramatic mermaid skirt. Having gone the traditional route with her last wedding, she can now feel free to try color. The skirt has a blush pink lining, and the ivory flowers on the skirt are delicately tipped with blush pink."

I mean, ka-POW. I'd love to see Kim wear something like this—and I'd love to see this dress sketch come to life.

Can you picture Kim Kardashian wearing this wedding dress when she marries Kanye West? Or will it be TOTALLY different?

"If I Invite Two Coworkers to My Wedding, Do I Have to Invite All of 'Em?" (I Say, Awkward!)

0
0

reader-dilemma

Writes Save the Date reader Nadine:

I've worked in an office of eight people for almost five years. It's my first job, and my boss has been very supportive of my career—letting me take on a lot of responsibility, giving me good raises and promotions, and allowing me to work a flexible schedule while I'm in grad school.

So here's the problem: I'd like to invite my boss to my wedding to show my appreciation. However, I fear that the administrative director may get offended if I invite the boss and not her; she's also been my advocate over the past five years and tends to get offended over slights, whether they're real or perceived. If I invite just the administrative director and the boss, it's a slippery slope—the rationale for who gets invited and who doesn't is less clear. I like all my coworkers and their significant others, but I can't fit everyone in the venue unless we get some declines. And my fiance works in the same field (his bosses used to work at my office), so I feel like we'd need to invite them too if my whole office gets invited—another eight people. Clearly, it would just be easier not to invite any coworkers, but I really would like to thank people who have supported me by inviting them to my wedding. What to do? Can I get away with just inviting a couple of coworkers in such a small office?

Here are my thoughts:

As an outsider who's unfamiliar with your office dynamics, I think you should just go the easy route and not invite anyone. Sure, there's a chance that you could invite a few people and not offend the rest of them, but figuring out who to invite and who not to seems like a massive headache.

I mean, based on what you've said, I feel like if you invite your boss you HAVE to invite your administrative director so you don't ruffle her feathers. And it seems if you invite those two, you feel like you have to invite the rest of your office. And if you invite your whole office, you feel like you have to invite your groom's office—plus everyone's significant others. So you're going to wind up with a few dozen people at your wedding who you didn't really want to invite.

NOT worth it.

I agree it would be nice to do something thoughtful to thank your boss, but I think she'd appreciate, say, a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant just as much as an invite to your wedding. And that would save you a logistical nightmare—not to mention a bunch of money.

Ladies, what do you think? Who from her office should Nadine invite to her wedding? All of 'em? None of 'em? Just a few people?

Ugh, I just hate awkwardness.

4 Celebrity Couples Who Might Just Get Married on New Year's Eve

0

We're due for some major celebrity wedding news, so I plan to keep one eye on the gossip sites while the other one's watching the ball drop on New Year's Eve. (Don't worry, I'll wear something sparkly and sip something festive while I stalk the celeb sites! And I'll be among friends.) Here are four celeb couples who I think could totally get married this New Year's Eve.

JESSICA SIMPSON & ERIC JOHNSON

Waaaaay back when Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson got engaged—that would be three years and two kids ago—there were rumors that they were planning a New Year's Eve wedding. Seems like this New Year's Eve would be an opportune time, no? And conveniently, they've spawned the two MOST adorable miniature attendants.
