Yipee! Brand-New Pretty Postage for Your Wedding Invitations! Because Wedding Invites With Flag Stamps Are Just Sad

$

0

Look, in the grand scheme of the world, OBVIOUSLY there are more important things than what stamps you put on your wedding invitations. But as a bride, I'll admit I would have been a teeeeeny bit sad to send off my gorgeous wedding invitations with a boring old flag stamp. (#firstworldproblems, I get it.) The USPS did have wedding-themed stamps when I got married (a flower-topped wedding cake or two white roses), but they felt pretty hokey. (We went with The Simpsons postage.) So I'm happy to announce that, as of yesterday, there's a new wedding-themed stamp in town. Ta-da!

2-wedding-invitation-postage

Thanks to extra-heavy paper and all those inserts, wedding invitations generally cost more to mail than your average letter, so you can't slap a "forever" stamp on them and call it a day. To make sure your invites make it safely to their destinations, bring one wedding invitation, all packed up, to the post office beforehand, and have them weigh it and tell you the correct postage. Otherwise you'll end up with a billion "Return to Sender" wedding invitations in your mailbox, and that would suck.

If you can get away with using a "forever" stamp, here are two cute options, also good for save-the-dates and thank-you notes:

Do you care about what stamps go on your wedding invitations?

I was surprised, but after putting so much effort into the envelopes—gorgeous wraparound labels that I typed on a friggin' typewriter—I REALLY cared!

Matt Damon and Wife Luciana Barroso Renewed Their Wedding Vows! Here Are All the Details!

Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso made it official—again! The couple, who exchanged vows eight years ago, said "I do" all over again on Saturday on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. They rented the entire Sugar Beach Resort for the weekend (for a hefty six figures) and welcomed around 50 guests, including Matt's BFF, Ben Affleck, and his wife, Jennifer Garner.

From Us: An eyewitness said that Matt and Luciana exchanged vows under thatched roofs at sunset. The groom wore a tan-colored suit and flip-flops, and the bride, 36, donned a cream-colored gown featuring a sequined belt at the waist. The couple's daughters—Isabella, 6, Gia, 4, Stella, 2, and Alexia, Luciana's daughter from a previous marriage—wore light-colored dresses to match their mom. After the 15-minute ceremony, guests (all of them wearing shades of cream and ivory) were escorted onto the beach for a cocktail reception, complete with tiki torches.

Thoughts on Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso's second-time-around wedding?

I think it's sweet, since they had an itty-bitty city hall wedding the first time around. It's not like they're renewing their vows with a blowout celebration every year. (Cough, heidiklumandseal.)

The No. 1 Most Important Tip for Looking Your Best in Your Wedding Portraits! (It's Model-Approved!)

$
0
0

There's a super-easy way to lengthen your silhouette and snap your posture into finishing-school-approved shape: Throw on a pair of high heels!

But wait! Throw on the brakes! I'm not saying every bride should walk down the aisle in stilettos or dance until her feet are cobbled for the sake of some flattering wedding portraits. If walking in heels just isn't a talent that's in your wheelhouse, wearing heels on your wedding day will make you look more like Quasimodo than Heidi Klum.

Still, even if you plan on wearing flats all day, I recommend packing a pair of high heels (around 2 or 3 inches—or more, if you can handle it) if you plan on taking wedding portraits. You won't be able to see the shoes peeking out from under your wedding dress, so it won't really matter what they look like. (And if they do sneak into view, your photographer can fudge the photos.) But the second you step into high heels, your body compensates for being thrown off balance by pushing your shoulders back and tilting your pelvis forward. Here's a little demo by my friend Jackie, whose Salvatore Ferragamo shoes had about a 5-inch heel.

26-v-andy-jackie-real-wedding

See? And why do you think models wear sky-high heels on the red carpet, even though they already tower over the general population? Because pretty much everyone looks better in heels, IMHO. Gisele agrees.

gisele-bundchen-givency

Obviously, as the bride, you're going to look your best if you're not wincing in pain or tripping over yourself, so I'm not recommending wearing heels from dawn till dusk. But do yourself a favor if you're taking portraits and have some heels at the ready. And if you're worried about being taller than your groom, save 'em for the solo pics!

Will you wear heels on your wedding day? Would you consider wearing them for your portraits?

I wore heels the whole time—but I ALWAYS wear heels. I wasn't torturing myself for the sake of some photos!

Are We Ready for Another Royal Wedding? Word on the Street Is That Prince Harry Wants to Propose to Cressida Bonas!

I really can't keep track of the overseas mags, so I'm not sure if this site is the equivalent of The New York Times or The National Enquirer, but either way, the news (or "news") they're reporting has me giddy!

According to news.com.au, Prince Harry and Cressida Bonas "discussed their future over an intimate dinner held at his apartment last week. This came after Harry and Cressida introduced each other to their respective families."

"Harry seems determined to prove how serious he is about her and that he's in it for the long run," the source continued. "He knows she's The One and they've started tentatively talking about the inevitable next step. It's nerve-racking, but they're both madly in love."

I don't know who the "source" would be at "an intimate dinner"—a bodyguard? a rogue candlestick?—so perhaps the whole story is BS. But I'm still a teeny bit excited about the prospect of getting up at 4 A.M. and blogging till my fingers bleed about the Royal Wedding 2.0.

Would you be excited about another royal wedding? Or do you still need some breathing room after Kate and Wills?

More Fun Details From Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso's Vow Renewal! (Jimmy Kimmel Officiated!) I'm Kind of Annoyed I Wasn't Invited

matt-damon-luciana-barroso-wedding-destination-wedding-married-celebrity-weddings-0227

Fine, I've never met Matt Damon or Luciana Barroso, but I'm from Boston(-ish), Matt! And I've lived in New York for 13 years, but I'm still a loyal Red Sox fan! Plus, I'm a super-fun wedding guest! Maybe next time?

Anywho, if you haven't read the news yet, Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso renewed their vows in St. Lucia on Saturday. And I just found out that Jimmy Kimmel was their officiant! (#nobiggie) We already knew that Matt's bestie, Ben Affleck, and his wife, Jennifer Garner, were there, but according to Us they weren't the only A-listers in town! Matt and Luciana were also joined by Jimmy's fiancee, Molly McNearney, Stanley Tucci and wife Felicity Blunt (Emily's sister!), Chelsea Clinton and husband Marc Mezvinsky, dress designer Naeem Kahn and wife Ranjana, director Gus Van Sant, Chris Hemsworth and wife Elsa Pataky, actor Chris Messina and wife Jennifer Todd, and Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. Whew!

People says even more celebs were on the guest list, including Robert DeNiro, Casey Affleck, and Don Cheadle.

From People: "It was a very family-oriented and happy celebration. "Many guests brought their children. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed an evening cocktail reception on the beach. Children were running around and playing with white parasols."

"It was a beautiful and relaxing weekend for guests. Matt and Luci went all out. Guests were flown in to the tropical island via private jets and were treated like royalty. Everyone enjoyed the sun and water activities, including snorkeling and paddle boarding. Guests were also treated to local gourmet food and drinks."

Thoughts on Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso's vow renewal?

With all the weddings I've attended, I'm kind of annoyed I've never been flown anywhere on a private jet. God. (Kidding!)

During a recent interview, "Achy Breaky Heart" singer Billy Ray Cyrus told a reporter that he's not sure if his daughter Miley Cyrus and her fiance, Liam Hemsworth, will ever get married.

"I don't know. I really don't," Billy Ray, 51, told ABC News in a new interview. "I play it by ear, and I know whatever is meant to be, that's the way it's going to happen."

"I know as I was writing the book I wanted to keep that particular moment as open-ended as possible. I didn't know the answer. They're young. They're kids."

Can anyone else practically hear Miley Cyrus slamming her bedroom door and yelling, "You are the WORST, Dad!"?

Attending Weddings This Summer? DON'T Commit These Wedding Guest Faux Pas!

$
0
0

wedding-etiquette-faux-pas-0415

It drives me BANANAS when wedding guests whip out their cell phone cameras (or regular cameras) during the wedding ceremony and start snapping photos of the bride and groom. Chances are there's a professional on hand who's getting paid to capture pics a thousand times better than whatever you're snapping by holding your cell phone above the heads of the people in the first 10 rows. And while you're busy cropping and filtering photos on Instagram, you're missing the ceremony, which is kind of the whole reason you're at the wedding, if I'm not mistaken.

And if you really MUST capture a photo of the bride and groom on your cell phone during the ceremony (and especially before!), do them a favor and don't post it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, or whatever else you crazy kids are using these days. It's bad enough when you're at a random party and people are uploading and tagging blurry, poorly lit photos that give you a double chin, so do the bride a favor and don't share photos of her before she has a chance to share her own.

Of course, if you want to snap selfies with your plus-one at the reception and share those on the interwebs, I'm OK with that. Just limit yourself to five or so shots throughout the night. Because even if you look like you're having a blast on Instagram, you're probably not really enjoying yourself if you're updating your Facebook status every five minutes.

The exception to all of this would be if the bride and groom have a wedding hashtag that they're sharing with guests (#dylanandkellyswedding). In that case, I think it's totally fine to share photos freely, but I still think you should pass on taking ceremony photos out of respect.

Do you take photos at weddings? Or do you leave that to the pros and enjoy the wedding instead?

The Bachelor's Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici Already Have a Wedding Date—and It's SOON!

While many couples from The Bachelor family of programming barely make it to "After the Final Rose," Sean Lowe, the most recent Bachelor, and Catherine Giudici are still going strong. In fact, they're planning a summer wedding!

Before last night's Dancing With the Stars elimination (Sean is competing on the show and his fiancee is his one-woman cheering section), host Tom Bergeron announced that Sean and Catherine would be married on ABC—in AUGUST! The math is confusing, since the show is filmed well before it airs, but I'm pretty sure the couple met in September. (You know, when he started dating 24 other girls at the same time?) So that would mean they'll have known each other less than a year before saying "I do." I guess when you know, you know? I mean, to give it a positive spin, there haven't been many Bachelor/Bachelorette weddings (Trista Rehn/Ryan Sutter, Ashley Hebert/J.P. Rosenbaum, and Jason Mesnick/Molly Malaney (although technically she was the runner-up, not the winner), but there have been zero Bachelor/Bachelorette divorces, so…

Do you think Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici will make it down the aisle? (Seems like all signs are pointing to YES!) And if they exchange vows, do you think they'll last forever-ever?

I think if there's a wedding, they'll last. Sean seems pretty serious about religion, and I don't see him getting divorced.

5 Super-Unique Engagement Rings—Because Not Every Girl Wants a Diamond Solitaire

$

I adore diamond solitaire engagement rings (so timeless!), but I get that they're not every girl's cup of tea. So I was totally excited for those other girls when I spotted this unique loveliness on Pinterest yesterday:

Engagement Ring 1
1-unique-engagement-rings-nora-kogan-0417

This engagement ring isn't on the site, but the band is pretty similar to The Skinny Ring, $3,630.

A little clicking let me to jewelry designer Nora Kogan, whose lone store (surprise!) is about three blocks from my apartment. (Cue "It's a Small World.") Here are four more gorgeous rings from her online shop:

Engagement Ring 2
2-unique-engagement-rings-nora-kogan-0417

Black Rosey Ring, $7,733.

Engagement Ring 3
3-unique-engagement-rings-nora-kogan-0417

Blue Aura Ring, $11,400.

Engagement Ring 4
4-unique-engagement-rings-nora-kogan-0417

The Candy Ring, $8,000.

Engagement Ring 5
5-unique-engagement-rings-nora-kogan-0417

For those of you who'd rather have a diamond band than something with a chunky stone: Marchesa Eternity Ring, $5,750.

Obviously these are a little spendier than a mass-produced ring that you'd get at a mega-retailer, but they're all handmade from conflict-free stones and often from recycled materials. Plus, you're supporting a local artist (or one of my local artists!), which is good for some Warm and Fuzzy points.

Which of these super-unique engagement rings is your favorite? Or do you want something more traditional?

I *adore* No. 2!

"I Got in a Fight With Our Officiant, So I Want to Fire Her! (But, Um, She's Family!)"

reader-dilemma

Writes Save the Date reader Rita:

I've always had a great relationship with my fiance's aunt. There are times that she made comments that raised a few eyebrows, but I was able to overlook them. When we got engaged, this aunt offered to officiate our wedding, and my fiance and I accepted.

Now fast-forward to a couple of weeks ago: My fiance and I were having a "wedding meeting" along with this aunt, another aunt, and my mom. Mid-meeting, officiant aunt FLIPPED OUT on me for being rude. Not for being rude to her, mind you. For being rude to my fiance and the other aunt. And when I say "flipped out," I mean it! She screamed at me, flipped me off when I said we needed to talk, and then sent me a follow-up text saying how horrible I am and that she's capable of "walking away from abusive people."

Meanwhile, no one else at the meeting thought I was out of line. I've been stressed, so I probably wasn't at my nicest, but "abusive"? Um, no.

After the fact I apologized again and asked her to explain what upset her. I said I was blindsided by her reaction, and it made me nervous that she was set to marry us, because I don't want there to be tension on our wedding day.

Well, this just made things worse. She's since started emailing my fiance to tell her how she REALLY feels about me, and she's being mean. In addition to calling me "abusive," she says I'm also "horrible" for not wanting her to marry us. I'm sorry, but I just don't! I don't want someone who thinks so poorly of me standing up in front of my closest friends and family members on our wedding day, especially since she's shown us her true colors. I don't want to risk another flip-out!

I understand that she's family and she'll be in our lives forever, so part of me thinks I should just suck it up and let her marry us. Then again, she's so mad that she won't even talk to my fiance, so why does she even want to marry us? I don't know what the right thing to do is—but our wedding is just two months away! Help!

Here are my thoughts:

Honestly, I just don't see how you can make things OK with this woman in time for your wedding. I'm not saying one of you is right and the other is wrong, but clearly there are a lot of hurt feelings and a lot of anger here, and I don't think you want that tension—which probably isn't going to dissipate in two short months—setting the tone for your wedding day. Even if things are seemingly fine, a lot of people (you, your mom, and your fiance, to name a few) are going to be on edge on your wedding day. And even if you were 100 percent in the wrong (which I don't think you were), I don't think any level of apology from you is going to fix this in time.

So here's what I'd do: First of all, find another officiant, stat. You don't want to be left in a position where this aunt is your only option.

After that, I'd try apologizing to the aunt again, just so you're not dealing with this nonsense for years to come. Since you haven't had much luck communicating in person (with the screaming and the flipping off) I think you'd be wise to email her. (Plus, if you and your fiance try to sit her down for a face-to-face chat, it'll be a two-against-one scenario, which will automatically put her on the defensive.) So I'd send a little email like this:

Dear Aunt So-and-So,

I just want you to know how sad Fiance and I are about the state of our relationship with you. We've always enjoyed having you in our lives, and we really feel your absence.

I'll admit that wedding planning has stressed me out, and I'm sorry if my stress came off as rudeness. I hope you know I would never be mean or abusive to anyone, especially Fiance or a family member.

We don't think it's fair to ask you to officiate our wedding when there's still a lot of tension between us, but we hope that it can be resolved in the very near future. We'd love to get together for lunch next weekend, and we hope that you'll still join us as a guest at our wedding.

In the meantime, again, please accept my apology, and know that we look forward to having you be a part of our lives and our wedding.

Love, Rita

Obviously writing that exact email is going to involve some sucking it up on your part. But even if you weren't in the wrong, I think it's best to kill her with kindness now, rather than dealing with drama drama drama down the line. And this way, if she continues to be ridiculous, at least you can say you made an honest effort.

Ladies, what do you think? Should Rita give in and let this aunt marry her? Or should she stick to her guns?

25 Ways to Personalize Your Wedding Ceremony

$
0
0

brides-blog-logo_new.jpg
Who says your reception is the only fun part of your wedding day? There's no reason your ceremony shouldn't be as exciting, meaningful, and inventive as your reception. Our wedding experts have advice on how to personalize your "I do"s from a pre-ceremony slideshow to a wedding time capsule.

bride-and-groom

1. Have a Drink
Start the celebration as soon as guests arrive by throwing a short (no more than an hour) pre-ceremony cocktail party. It will give everyone a chance to mingle and ensure that even your chronically late college roommate will get there in time for the main event. Keep it simple by serving a festive cocktail or two and a small treat like artisanal popcorn in paper cones. As for whether you choose to make a special guest appearance yourself—possibly in another cute white outfit—that's up to you.

2. Thank Your Guests
Make guests feel welcome from the moment they arrive by writing them personal notes and leaving them at the ceremony entrance, recommends Lauren Geissler of San Francisco's Downey Street Events. Another plus: By giving cards, you can skip the receiving line, giving you more time for photos and the reception.

3. Personalize Your Program
Todd Fiscus of Todd Events in Dallas suggests sprinkling your programs with personal details, like factoids about your VIPs ("Father Don baptized Steven" or "Beth's mom makes the best pralines west of the Mississippi!"), photos from your engagement shoot, a hand-drawn map illustrating your adventures together—anything that sets the tone for the wedding ahead.

4. Plan a Group Activity
If you're marrying at a location like a museum, zoo, or aquarium, give your guests the option of taking a fun behind-the-scenes tour before your "I do"s.

5. Provide Flower Favors
Gift your guests with boutonnieres (for the men) and fresh-flower hair clips (for the women). Arrange them on trays near the beginning of the wedding aisle.

6. Screen a Slideshow
Dying to do a slideshow? Play it before your ceremony rather than at the rehearsal dinner. It's a unique way to entertain guests until the vows.

7. Pick an Alternative Bridesmaid Bouquet
Skip the bouquets and have your besties carry a chic clutch instead. (It doubles as a bridesmaid's gift!) Other creative options: silk fans, parasols in your colors, or candlelit lanterns (great for an evening ceremony).

8. Choose a Calligraphed Runner
Ask a calligrapher—or a friend with good penmanship—to emblazon your aisle runner with something personal, using chalk or fabric paint (a line from a favorite poem, perhaps). Or you can have a custom runner created just for you (try originalrunners.com).

9. Make Your Processional Music Meaningful
Meaningful processional music is a must, say Paige Appel and Kelly Harris of Los Angeles' Bash, Please. Is "Sweet Child O' Mine" your song? Play it. Did you grow up in New Jersey? Head to the altar to Springsteen's "Jersey Girl."

10. Get Creative With the Ring Bearer
Have your ring bearer carry your bands on something unique: a felt flower, a mini fishing rod, or a slice of wood that says "Here Comes the Bride."

11. Walk Down the Aisle Together
Buck tradition and walk down the aisle with your guy. It's a poignant way to kick off your new life together.

12. Pick an Altar Backdrop
Place something pretty behind the altar. A flower-filled bookcase, sparkly garlands, and a curtain of ribbons are photogenic options.

13. Sign On a Celebrant
Not having a religious ceremony? Ask a friend to be your officiant. (It's free to get ordained online through the Universal Life Church.) Fun fact: If you live in Colorado or some parts of Pennsylvania, you can marry yourselves!

14. Gather 'Round Your Guests
Seat guests in a circle around the altar. You'll feel surrounded by love.

15. Provide a Passage to Read Out Loud
Print a fave passage in your program and invite everyone to read it aloud together.

16. Make a Time Capsule
Before the wedding, write a letter to your groom. (He should do the same for you.) During the ceremony, put the notes and a bottle of wine in a box and take turns hammering it shut. Open it on your 10th anniversary!

17. Write Mad Lib Vows!
Want to write your own vows but don't know where to start? Fill in the blanks and get inspired!

18. Water a Plant
Another ritual to try: Add a scoop of soil from each of your hometowns to a small potted tree, then water it together to symbolize the merging of your two lives. (You can plant it when you get home from the honeymoon.)

19. Say No to Poems
Forgo readings and ask a few people to stand up and share their marriage wisdom (but tell them to keep the speeches short).

20. Flip for the Vows
Have the best man flip a coin to see who will say their vows first.

21. Slow-Dance at the Altar
Don't wait until the reception for your first dance. Ending your vows cheek to cheek is really sweet.

22. Toast to Your New Spouse!
Or end the ceremony on a celebratory note: Have the ushers pass around your favorite drink (single-malt scotch, tequila shots and lime) and make your first toast as husband and wife.

23. Say "Hey" to Your Guests
Share the joy by stepping into the pews for a quick hug from your favorite cousin or BFF.

24. Lead the Way to the Reception
If you're within walking distance, invite guests—and a rollicking band—to accompany you, parade style, from the ceremony to the reception.

25. Throw Them a Twist
Nix the tossed rice and have guests wave ribbon wands or colorful paper pinwheels as you exit the ceremony. Or place party-store tambourines, kazoos, and other noisemakers on seats so guests can jam while you walk out.

3 Beauty "Rules" Brides Can (and Should!) Totally Break

beauty-rules-brides-should-break

That old saying about rules being made to be broken? It's especially true when you're a bride. After all, if there's any day when you can declare yourself queen of the universe and do whatever suits your fancy, it's your wedding day. Here are a few examples of beauty rules that are pretty much meant to be broken when you're a bride.

The rule: Wear dramatic eyes or lips, but not both.
Why brides can break it: If your wedding hair is styled down to the last strand and your dress is a serious head-turner (especially a heavily beaded head-turner!), doing strong makeup on your eyes and lips provides balance and brings the focus back to your face. Plus, it makes your features look great in photos.

The rule: Don't apply too many coats of mascara or it'll clump.
Why brides can break it: Oh, go ahead, pile on the mascara—as long as it's waterproof, of course. You want your eyes to look more amazing than ever and pop in photos, and let's be honest, none of your guests are going to be focusing on the minutia of your individual lashes, especially after a couple pinot grigios. Same goes for fake lashes; they don't have to look that realistic. People kinda expect you to be wearing falsies anyway.

The rule: Unwashed hair makes for a better updo.
Why brides can break it: You've probably heard the advice that it's better NOT to wash your hair the day of your wedding if you're doing an updo. It's true—a little grime provides great "grip" that can make an updo hold better. However, who cares how well your updo holds if your roots look greasy and you feel not-so-fresh. A new rule: If you can easily get away without washing, definitely skip it. But if you'll feel prettier with freshly shampooed hair, don't think twice about lathering up; there are plenty of great texturizing products your hairstylist can use to add that "grip" (just warn her in advance so she can bring some, or so you can buy some!).

What beauty rules did you ladies break as brides, or do you plan to break when you get married? Tell us below!
